To cancel UPI AutoPay, open the UPI app where you set it up, go to your profile, open AutoPay, pick the mandate under the Live tab, tap Cancel autopay and confirm with your UPI PIN. After that, the merchant can't debit your account for that mandate.
You have to cancel in the app where the mandate was created, or in an app it was moved to. Cancelling a subscription on the merchant's website doesn't always revoke the UPI mandate behind it, so check both.
Cancel UPI AutoPay in Google Pay
- Open Google Pay.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap AutoPay.
- Open the Live tab and tap the mandate you want to stop.
- Tap Cancel autopay.
- Enter your UPI PIN to confirm.
Google's help page says a UPI PIN is needed to revoke a mandate. Once it's revoked, the merchant can't take any more payments under it.
Cancel it in PhonePe, Paytm or BHIM
The path is similar in every UPI app. Look for AutoPay or Mandates in your profile or payment settings, open the active list, choose the mandate and pick cancel, revoke or delete. You'll be asked for your UPI PIN. If the wording differs, search the app's settings for AutoPay.
Can't find which app it's in? Check the debit SMS from your bank, which usually names the app or merchant, or look in each UPI app's AutoPay list. NPCI also runs UPI Help, an assistant that can show and manage your UPI mandates in one place.
The timing trick most people miss
You don't have to remember renewal dates. Google's help page says you're notified within 24 hours before your bank takes each AutoPay payment. Tap that notification and you can pause or cancel the mandate right there with your UPI PIN, before the debit happens.
So if you've decided to stop a subscription, keep notifications on for your UPI app. That 24-hour alert is your last clean chance to stop the next payment without chasing a refund.
Pause instead of cancel
If you only want a break, say for a gym membership while you travel, pause the mandate rather than cancelling it. Google Pay lets you choose a start and end date for the pause. When the pause ends, the mandate is still there, so you don't have to set it up again.
| Option | What happens | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Pause | No debits between the dates you choose | A short break you plan to come back from |
| Cancel (revoke) | The mandate ends; no more debits | Stopping a service for good |
| Cancel on merchant site only | The service may stop, but check the UPI mandate too | Never rely on this alone |
When the cancel button won't work
- Loan EMIs: Google says if the mandate is for a loan, you can't cancel it through Google Pay. Google tells you to contact the merchant, which here is your lender. Loan agreements usually govern those payments, so expect the lender to ask why.
- Inactive bank account: the bank account linked to the mandate needs to be active in the app. Reactivate it, then try again.
- Mandate not in the list: it may live in a different UPI app, or it may be a card mandate rather than UPI. Card mandates are cancelled with your card issuer.
Things to clear up before you remove a bank account
Google's help pages say you need to revoke any live mandates before you close your Google Pay account or delete a UPI ID. To remove a bank account, you also have to unlink any active AutoPay or UPI Lite tied to it. So if an app won't let you remove an account, an old mandate is the usual reason.
Check your Live mandates in five minutes
Here's the quick review I'd do today. Open the AutoPay screen in every UPI app on your phone, one at a time. In each Live tab, read the merchant name and the frequency on every mandate. Ask yourself one question for each: would I sign up for this again today? If the answer is no, cancel it on the spot. If you're unsure, pause it for a month and see whether you miss it.
While you're there, look at mandates you didn't expect, such as an OTT app you thought was a one-off purchase, or a mandate left over from a free trial. Google's page lists the kinds of things people set AutoPay up for, including mobile bills, electricity bills, EMIs, insurance and mutual funds. Anything outside what you remember setting up deserves a closer look, and if you can't place it at all, report it to your bank.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Finally, confirm the change. Google says the status of a paused or cancelled mandate shows in the Live tab, so check it there before you close the app.
Is AutoPay itself a bad idea?
Not at all. Google's page says there's no charge for setting up or using UPI AutoPay, and it saves you missing bills like electricity, mobile or insurance payments. My advice is to review your Live mandates every few months. Free trials that turn into paid plans are the classic leak, and they're easy to forget.
And watch for scams. A real AutoPay request always shows the merchant's name and the amount on your own screen. If someone sends you an AutoPay request to "receive" a payout or prize, decline it. You never approve a mandate to get paid. I go through more of these tricks in my earning app safety checklist and in my guide to safe Paytm cash-out apps.
If a debit went through after you cancelled
Check the date you revoked it against the debit date first. If the payment came after you revoked the mandate, contact the merchant with your cancellation screenshot, then your bank. If that doesn't settle it, NPCI's UPI complaint form takes mandate complaints too.
