How to Unremember an Account on Instagram (2026 Guide)

To unremember an account on Instagram, log out of it and choose not to save your login info. If it still shows on the login screen, tap the three dots beside the account or press and hold it, then choose Remove. You can also turn off saved login in Accounts Centre.

When Instagram remembers an account, it keeps your username and a sign-in token on your device so you can tap your profile and get straight in without typing a password. That's convenient on your own phone. It's a problem on a shared tablet, a work phone or an old device you're about to sell.

Remembering isn't the same as being logged in. You can be logged out and still have the account saved on the login screen. This guide covers both.

Why you might want to unremember an account

  • You've switched to a new account and want the old one gone from your login screen.
  • Someone else uses the device, such as a partner, a child or a colleague.
  • You're handing a phone to a repair shop or selling it.
  • You've left a job and don't want the company account sitting on a personal phone.

Whatever your reason, you'll want the saved login gone, not just a quick log out.

Remove a saved account on your phone

This works on iPhone and Android, and it's the quickest fix.

  1. Open Instagram and tap your profile picture at the bottom right.
  2. Tap the three lines at the top right, then Settings and activity.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Log out. If you see several accounts, choose the one you want to log out of.
  4. If Instagram asks whether to save your login info, say no.
  5. Back on the login screen, find the saved account. Tap the three dots beside it, or press and hold it.
  6. Tap Remove, then confirm.

Menu names move around between versions. If you can't see the word Remove, search the app's settings for saved login, or check your account list for the word remove.

What removing a saved account does

It's worth knowing what you're changing, so there are no surprises.

  • Your account stays exactly as it was. Posts, followers, messages and settings aren't touched.
  • The phone forgets the shortcut. Next time, you'll need your username and password, plus a code if you use two-factor authentication.
  • Other devices aren't affected. You'll need to repeat the steps on each one.
  • Any other accounts you've added to the app stay saved unless you remove them too.

Turn off saved login in Accounts Centre

Instagram also keeps a saved login setting inside Accounts Centre, which is the shared settings area for Instagram and Facebook.

  1. Go to Settings and activity.
  2. Tap Accounts Centre.
  3. Tap Password and security.
  4. Tap Saved login.
  5. Pick the account and switch saved login off, or remove it.

If you can't find it, search the settings for the word saved. If you use Facebook as well, the two accounts may be linked here, so check you're changing the right one before you confirm.

On a web browser

The browser has its own memory, separate from the app. To clear a saved Instagram account there, work through both of these.

On the Instagram login page

Go to instagram.com while you're logged out. If you see a saved profile tile, look for an X, three dots, or a link such as Switch accounts or Not you. Remove the profile from that screen.

In the browser's saved passwords

  • Chrome: open Settings, go to Passwords and autofill, search for instagram and delete the entry.
  • Safari on a Mac: open Settings, then Passwords, find instagram.com and remove it.
  • Edge and Firefox: open Settings, search for passwords, find instagram.com and delete it.

Clearing cookies and site data for instagram.com also signs you out. It's a good idea if you've used someone else's computer.

If the account keeps coming back

Sometimes a saved account seems to reappear. Usually one of these is the cause.

  • You logged in again and tapped save when Instagram offered. Say no this time.
  • A password manager on your phone or browser is filling in the login. Delete the saved entry there.
  • You have the account saved in a second place, such as the app and a browser. Clear both.
  • The app is out of date. Update it and try again.
  • You have several accounts added to the app. Remove each one you don't want.

If nothing works, delete the Instagram app and install it again from the official App Store or Google Play. Back up anything you need first, and only download from those official stores.

Shared and work phones

Shared devices are where saved logins cause trouble. If you manage a business account with a team, or you've borrowed a phone, a few habits protect you.

  • Always log out before you hand the device back, and say no when asked to save login info.
  • Use a private or incognito window on any computer that isn't yours.
  • Use a screen lock so nobody can open the app while you're away.
  • Don't share your password with staff. Give them access through roles and permissions instead, where your account offers it.
  • Before selling or recycling an old phone, log out of every app and reset it.

Not sure you've got the right account saved on a shared device? Here's how to check whether you already have an Instagram account.

A short security check afterwards

Once you've removed the saved account, take two minutes to make sure nobody else can still get in.

  1. Open Accounts Centre, then Password and security.
  2. Tap Where you're logged in and log out of any device you don't recognise.
  3. Change your password if you've ever used it on a shared device.
  4. Turn on two-factor authentication, using an authenticator app if you can.
  5. Check the email address and phone number on the account are yours.

If you see activity that isn't yours and you can't get in, here's how to recover a hacked Instagram account without email access. And if Instagram tells you it has paused your sign-in, read about an account that's temporarily locked before you try again, since repeated attempts can make things worse.

Frequently asked questions

What does remember login info mean on Instagram?

It means Instagram saves your username and a sign-in token on that device, so you can open the account later without typing your password.

How do I remove a saved account from the Instagram login screen?

Tap the three dots beside the account, or press and hold it, then choose Remove. If you don't see that option, log out of the account and decline when Instagram offers to save your login.

Does removing a saved account delete my Instagram account?

No. It only removes the saved login from that device. Your profile, posts and followers stay exactly as they were.

Can I stop Instagram remembering me in my browser?

Yes. Remove the saved profile from the Instagram login page, delete the saved password in your browser's settings, and clear cookies for instagram.com.
