WhatsApp deletes messages from its servers once they're delivered, so your chats live on your phone and in your own backup. Undelivered messages are held encrypted for up to 30 days while WhatsApp keeps trying, then deleted. How long you keep a chat after that is up to you, your backup and any disappearing message setting.
People ask how long WhatsApp keeps messages for two very different reasons: worry that chats are sitting on a server somewhere, or panic that an old conversation might have vanished. The answer to both comes down to one design choice: WhatsApp doesn't store your delivered messages. Your phone does. Here's what WhatsApp holds, for how long, and what that means for recovering old chats.
How long WhatsApp keeps messages on its servers
| Message type | Kept on WhatsApp's servers | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Delivered messages | Deleted once delivered | WhatsApp privacy policy |
| Undelivered messages | Up to 30 days, encrypted, then deleted | WhatsApp privacy policy |
| Media such as photos and videos | May be kept encrypted for up to 30 days to help delivery | WhatsApp UK privacy policy |
| Unopened view once media | Expires from the chat after 14 days | WhatsApp Help Center |
WhatsApp says it can't read the content of messages it holds for delivery, because they're end-to-end encrypted. The 30-day window for undelivered messages exists for the person whose phone is off, out of signal or lost for a while: once they reconnect, the message arrives.
So where are my old WhatsApp messages?
On your phone and in your backup, and nowhere else WhatsApp controls. That has two consequences people don't expect:
- WhatsApp can't recover a deleted chat for you. If it's gone from your phone and isn't in your backup, there's no server copy to ask for.
- The other person still has their copy. Deleting a chat on your phone doesn't remove it from theirs, unless you used delete for everyone in time.
How long messages stay on your phone
As long as you keep them. There's no automatic expiry for normal chats. Messages disappear from your phone only if you delete them, turn on disappearing messages, lose the phone without a backup, or delete your account.
How long your backup lasts
Your backup is the safety net, and it has its own rules. On Android, WhatsApp backs up to your Google Account, and WhatsApp's help says Google may automatically delete backups that haven't been updated in five months. Each new backup also replaces the previous one. So if you're relying on an old backup to find a message from years ago, it may not hold what you think.
Disappearing messages and view once
If you or the other person turned on disappearing messages, chats are removed automatically after the time you chose. View once photos, videos and voice messages vanish after they're opened, and WhatsApp says unopened ones expire from the chat 14 days after being sent. WhatsApp also notes encrypted media may be stored for a few weeks on its servers after sending, which is about delivery, not a copy you can retrieve.
What happens when you delete your account
WhatsApp says deleting your account can take up to 90 days to remove your information, and that it doesn't affect the copies other people hold, such as messages you sent them. Your Google Account backup is deleted too. That's a permanent step, so download anything you want first.
How to keep the messages you care about
Since WhatsApp isn't your archive, you have to be. A few simple habits make sure the chats that matter survive a lost phone or a switch to a new one:
- Turn on automatic backups and check the date of the last one now and then.
- Export important chats, such as conversations with a client or a landlord, from inside the chat, and save the file somewhere safe.
- Star key messages so they're easy to find again.
- Before changing phones, run a fresh backup and confirm it finished.
For business owners, that export habit is worth building in. If a dispute ever comes up, a saved copy of the conversation is far more useful than hoping an old backup still has it, and it takes seconds to do while the chat is fresh.

Can police or anyone get old messages from WhatsApp?
Because delivered messages are deleted from WhatsApp's servers and the content is encrypted, there isn't a store of old chat content sitting with WhatsApp to hand over. The places old messages realistically exist are the devices in the conversation and their backups. If privacy is the worry, those are what to protect: lock your phone, use a backup option you trust, and think about disappearing messages for sensitive chats.
If messages aren't arriving in the first place, that's a delivery problem rather than a storage one: see my guide to WhatsApp lagging or hanging. And if photos in old chats won't open, WhatsApp images not loading covers why media goes missing.
My verdict
WhatsApp only holds undelivered messages, for up to 30 days, and deletes the rest once they arrive. Your history lives on your phone and in your backup, so those are what to look after. Back up regularly, keep the phone safe, and don't expect WhatsApp to recover a chat you've deleted, because it simply doesn't have it.
