Venmo is an app for paying and requesting payments from friends, such as splitting a lunch bill or sending your roommate half the rent. You sign up on the iOS or Android app, link and verify a bank account, then pay anyone by name, username, phone number or email, and the payment usually lands in their Venmo account right away.
Here's the part beginners don't expect. Until you verify your identity, you can receive payments and move them to your bank, but you can't spend what's sitting in your Venmo account. Unverified accounts also have a weekly spending limit of $299.99, as of October 2026. Once you're verified, you can send up to $60,000 a week.
Signing up for a personal account
- Download the Venmo app for iOS or Android.
- Choose your sign-up method and create a password between 8 and 20 characters, with at least one number or symbol.
- Verify your phone number and email address.
- Add and verify your bank account.
That's enough to start receiving payments. You're only allowed one personal Venmo account at a time, and Venmo is meant for payments between separate people, so you can't use it to pay yourself or shuffle funds between your own cards and banks. Venmo and PayPal are both services of PayPal, Inc.
Sending a payment or a request
- Tap Pay/Request at the bottom of the screen.
- Search for the person by name, Venmo username, phone number or email address.
- Enter an amount and add a note.
- Tap Pay or Request.
Your top payment partners appear at the top of the Home tab, so you can tap an avatar to pay them quickly. Before paying a phone number or email address, ask the person to confirm it's verified on their Venmo account, which helps the payment reach the right place. On the web, sign in and click Pay or Request at the top of the sidebar.
To split a bill, add everyone before you send. Tap the plus icon next to your first recipient, add the rest, tap Next and enter the amount. Venmo splits the total evenly between your payment partners and you, though you can edit each person's share or remove someone. Everyone sees the same note. You can also schedule payments and requests ahead of time.
Where each payment is funded from
If you have access to a Venmo balance and it covers the whole payment, Venmo uses the balance. Venmo never splits a payment between your balance and a card or bank, so if the balance falls short, your preferred payment method pays the lot. You can check and change the payment method by tapping the bank or card at the bottom of the payment screen, but only before you send. Once a payment's gone, you can't change it.
Not sure whether you can spend your balance? Go to the Me tab and tap the Wallet toggle. If you see Venmo balance next to the amount, you're set. A verified balance can be used to:
- Pay other people on Venmo
- Buy from authorized merchants in their apps or on their mobile sites
- Pay with Venmo QR codes at participating stores
- Spend with the Venmo Debit Card anywhere in the US that takes Mastercard
Payment timing and Pending status
Most payments arrive right away. For some bank-funded payments, the sender's bank may need up to 5 business days, and Venmo marks the payment Pending and tells you. If you paid from a bank account, it can take a few days to show on your bank statement. Tap any payment in your transactions feed to see its status. A Pending payment can also mean the recipient hasn't finished setting up their account. Expecting a payment that hasn't turned up? Ask the sender to check they used your correct username or contact details.
Weekly rolling limits
| Account status | What you can do, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Identity not verified | Receive payments and transfer them to a bank; spend up to $299.99 a week on people and authorized merchants |
| Identity verified | Spend your balance and send up to $60,000 per week |
Most Venmo limits roll over a week. A payment counts against your limit for exactly one week from when it was authorized, so a payment sent at 11:00 AM on a Monday stops counting at 11:01 AM the following Monday. To verify, tap the Settings gear, then Identity Verification. Venmo reviews limits from time to time and can change them based on your account history and activity, and a payment can still be declined for reasons other than your limits.
Moving your balance to your bank
A standard bank transfer has no fee and goes through ACH. It typically completes within one business day but can take up to 3 business days, not counting weekends and US bank holidays. Start a transfer after 7pm ET on a weekday, or on a weekend or holiday, and processing begins the next business day. Venmo's own example: start one on a Monday bank holiday, processing begins Tuesday, and Wednesday's the earliest it could land. Instant transfers are quicker but carry a fee.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Look for VENMO-0 CASHOUT on your bank statement, and check the dates around the estimate in your feed, because transfers sometimes post on a different day. After three full business days with nothing, your bank details may have been entered wrongly or your bank may have refused the transfer. Transfers are also reviewed, which can delay them.
My verdict on how Venmo works
I'd use Venmo for exactly what it was built for: settling up with people you know. Verify your identity early so your balance is spendable, double-check usernames before you pay, and stick to standard transfers unless you can't wait. Before you send to anyone you haven't met, read up on common Venmo scams, and if you're weighing it against a bank-to-bank option, here's how Zelle compares.
