Guest Posting Statistics 2026: What 3,204 Guest Post Websites Tell Us

I've kept a list of websites that accept guest posts for years, and in September 2026 I checked every single domain on it live. That check, plus my own Search Console data and some trusted outside research on how search and AI now find sources, gives the clearest picture of guest posting in 2026 that I know of. Most of the numbers on this page are my own, so you won't find them anywhere else. The method is at the bottom, and the full study is here.

Last updated September 2026.

Key guest posting statistics for 2026

  • I checked 3,204 unique domains behind 4,894 guest post listings in September 2026.
  • 17.7% of guest post websites were dead or parked (568 of 3,204).
  • The median live guest post site has 1,004 referring domains.
  • 50.2% of the sites have 1,000 or more referring domains, and 13.9% have 10,000 or more.
  • The median listed domain authority is 43, and 37% of sites are DA 50 or higher.
  • Automotive guest post sites die fastest: 29.4% were dead or parked, followed by pets and animals at 29.0%.
  • Business is the biggest guest post category with 380 sites, then marketing with 293 and technology with 181.
  • Searches for guest posting services that reached my site rose 18.6% in distinct searches and 47% in clicks, comparing the 28 days to 26 September 2026 with the 28 days before.
  • 88% of Google's AI summaries cite three or more sources, which means AI answers are built from other people's websites. Source: Pew Research Center.
  • Google organic search traffic to more than 2,500 sites fell 33% in a year, which makes referral traffic from other sites matter more. Source: Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2026.

How many guest post websites are still live?

Any list of websites is a snapshot. Sites get sold, hosting lapses and owners move on. So in September 2026 I ran a live check on every unique domain on my list.

  • 4,894 listings, which came down to 3,204 unique domains once duplicates were removed.
  • 568 domains, or 17.7%, were dead or parked.
  • 2,636 domains, or 82.3%, were live and still answering.

Roughly one in six guest post sites on a list that's a few years old won't be there when you pitch. That's why I only show the live ones now on my searchable list of websites that accept guest posts.

Which guest post niches die fastest?

The dead rate wasn't even across the list. Here's the share of sites that were dead or parked, by category, for the categories with the highest rates:

  • Automotive: 29.4% of 68 sites.
  • Pets and animals: 29.0% of 62 sites.
  • Health and fitness: 25.7% of 179 sites.
  • Fashion and wedding: 24.8% of 145 sites.
  • Family and parenting: 23.4% of 107 sites.
  • Lifestyle: 23.1% of 147 sites.
  • Career: 22.2% of 63 sites.
  • Religion: 20.0% of 65 sites.

My read: hobby niches run by one person fold when that person moves on. Business, marketing and technology sites tend to be run as businesses, so they stick around.

How much authority do guest post sites have?

I pulled referring domain counts for every domain on the list, not a sample. Referring domains count how many different websites link to a site, which is a fairer read of its standing than raw link counts.

  • Median referring domains across all 3,204 domains: 1,004.
  • 50.2% have 1,000 or more referring domains.
  • 13.9% have 10,000 or more.
  • Only 4% have fewer than 100.
  • Median listed domain authority: 43.
  • 37% are DA 50 or above, and under 0.3% sit below DA 20.

Spam scores on guest post sites

I checked the spam score on a random sample of 200 live sites from the list.

  • The median spam score was 23.
  • 36% of the sample scored 30 or higher.

A raised spam score isn't a verdict. It flags patterns like lots of outbound links or a domain that has changed hands and topics. Read a few recent posts before you decide.

The biggest guest post categories

The list covers 37 categories. These are the largest by number of sites:

  • Business: 380 sites.
  • Marketing: 293 sites.
  • Technology: 181 sites.
  • Health and fitness: 179 sites.
  • Lifestyle: 147 sites.
  • Fashion and wedding: 145 sites.
  • Travel: 142 sites.
  • Web design and development: 127 sites.
  • Books and writing: 119 sites.
  • Food: 117 sites.
  • Finance: 113 sites.
  • Blogging: 111 sites.

Guest posting search demand

My site gets a lot of search traffic from people looking for guest post opportunities, so my own Search Console data is a useful window into the market. I grouped every search that mentioned guest posts, write for us pages, sponsored posts, link inserts, backlinks or contributing to a site, and compared the 28 days from 30 August to 26 September 2026 with the 28 days before.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • Distinct guest posting searches that reached my site rose from 1,190 to 1,411, up 18.6%.
  • Clicks from those searches rose by 47%.

I also pulled US Google Ads search volumes through DataForSEO on 29 September 2026. Averaged over the last 12 months:

  • "guest post" and "guest posting" each averaged 1,000 searches a month.
  • "write for us" averaged 880 searches a month.
  • "guest post sites" and "guest posting sites" each averaged 320.
  • "guest post outreach" averaged 260.
  • Across 133 niche "write for us" searches I checked in September 2026, the biggest were technology (320 searches a month for "write for us technology"), fashion (260) and home improvement (210), followed by lifestyle, real estate and SEO at 110 each.

Those numbers only count the exact phrases. Most people search for their own niche, which is why I built a write for us finder that covers niches well beyond these.

Why guest posting matters more as AI answers take over

Guest posting used to be about one thing: a link. In 2026 it's also about being one of the sources AI answers are built from, and about traffic that doesn't depend on a single search engine.

  • 88% of Google's AI summaries cite three or more sources, and only 1% cite a single source. Source: Pew Research Center, July 2025.
  • Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit make up 15% of the sources in Google's AI summaries. Source: Pew Research Center.
  • In my own study, independent blogs appeared in about 1% of AI Overviews, while YouTube appeared in 57%. Source: my AI Overviews study.
  • Google organic search traffic to more than 2,500 sites fell by 33% globally and by 38% in the United States between November 2024 and November 2025. Source: Chartbeat data in the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2026.
  • Google holds a 90% share of the global search engine market. Source: Wikipedia.

When one search engine controls 90% of the market and sends less traffic every year, getting your name onto established sites your customers already read is one of the few levers you control.

There's one more number worth knowing. Pew found that 60% of Google searches that start with a question word produce an AI summary. A guest post that answers a clear question, on a site Google already trusts, has a far better chance of being one of the sources that summary is built from than a thin post on your own new blog.

How I'd choose a guest post site in 2026

Here's the short process I'd follow, based on what the numbers above show:

  • Start with a list that has been checked recently, so you're not writing for a site that died last spring.
  • Match the site to your topic first and its authority second. A relevant site with 1,000 referring domains beats an irrelevant one with 10,000.
  • Look at the last five posts. If nothing has been published in six months, move on.
  • Check whether the site ranks for anything. A site with authority but no search visibility sends you very little.
  • Write the piece you'd want to read. Editors can spot a post written only for a link in a paragraph.

What these guest posting statistics mean for you

  • Check a site is live before you write anything. One in six on an older list won't be.
  • Favour business, marketing and technology sites if your topic fits. They're the biggest categories and they last longer.
  • Don't write a site off on a spam score alone. Look at what it publishes.
  • Pitch a specific angle. My guide on how to get a guest post accepted walks through what editors say yes to.

Methodology

My own data: in September 2026 every unique domain behind the 4,894 listings on my guest post websites list (3,204 domains) got a live HTTP check to confirm whether it resolved and responded, or was dead, parked or squatted. For every domain I pulled referring domain counts and rank through DataForSEO. Spam scores come from a random sample of 200 live domains. Search demand comes from my Google Search Console data for the 28 days from 30 August to 26 September 2026, compared with the 28 days from 2 to 29 August 2026, and from a DataForSEO pull of US Google Ads search volumes on 29 September 2026. Google Ads volumes are rounded into bands.

Third-party data comes from Pew Research Center, the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford and Wikipedia. I checked every number against the live source on 29 September 2026. No vendor data is linked and nothing is estimated.

Frequently asked questions

How many guest post websites are still active in 2026?

In my September 2026 check of 3,204 unique guest post domains, 2,636 (82.3%) were live and 568 (17.7%) were dead or parked.

What's a good referring domain count for a guest post site?

The median site on my list has 1,004 referring domains, so anything above 1,000 is in the stronger half. Sites with 10,000 or more make up 13.9% of the list.

Which guest post niches have the most sites?

Business has the most with 380 sites, followed by marketing with 293, technology with 181, and health and fitness with 179. The list covers 37 categories in total.

Is guest posting still worth it in 2026?

I think so, for two reasons. Demand is still there: guest posting searches reaching my site rose 18.6% in a month. And with Google sending less organic traffic to publishers every year, being published on established sites gives you visibility that doesn't depend on your own rankings.

Why do guest post sites go offline?

Most are small sites run by one person. When the owner stops paying for hosting or moves on, the site goes. Hobby niches like automotive (29.4% dead) and pets (29.0% dead) had the highest rates in my check.
