Google Merchant Center: What It Is, What It Costs and How to Set It Up

Google Merchant Center is Google's free tool for uploading and managing your product data so your products can appear across Google Search, Maps, YouTube and more at no cost. New accounts are opted in to these free listings by default, and you only pay anything if you choose to run Shopping ads, which are a separate paid option.

If you sell products online or in a shop, this is one of the few places Google hands out reach for nothing. The work isn't the sign-up, which takes minutes. It's the product data: the titles, images, prices, identifiers and shipping details Google uses to decide when to show your products.

Where your products can appear for free

Google's help page lists the places free listings can show your products at no cost:

  • Google Search
  • The Shopping tab
  • Google Maps
  • Google Images and Google Lens
  • YouTube
  • Gemini

Two details worth knowing before you start. Free listings help your product pages appear, not your homepage, your shipping or returns policy pages or your category pages. And they cover products sold online and in store, so a local shop with no ecommerce site can still use them.

Two setup choices you can't undo

These are the ones that catch people out, because you only find out later:

  • One Google Account, one Merchant Center account. Google says a single Google Account email can create only one Merchant Center account. Sign up with the business account you plan to keep, not a personal login you'll want to hand over later.
  • The country is fixed. The country you pick at setup can't be changed afterwards, and your time zone is filled in from the country of your business address. Get it right first time.
  • Users can be shared. One user can be added to a maximum of 100 Merchant Center accounts, which is how agencies and multi-brand owners manage several shops.

How to set up Google Merchant Center

  1. Sign in to Merchant Center with the Google Account you want to keep for the business.
  2. Tell Google about your business, where you sell (online, in store or both) and your checkout options.
  3. Add your products. Google can pull product information from your online store automatically at sign-up, or you can upload it yourself. If you use a platform such as Shopify, link it so products sync.
  4. Open the Needs attention tab on the Products page and fix anything flagged.
  5. Set up your shipping settings and add your return policy.
  6. Check the Free listings card under Marketing, then Marketing methods, to confirm free listings are on.

If your account was created through a partner platform, Google says product data changes go through that partner's portal rather than Merchant Center itself. And if sign-up keeps failing, Google's own suggestions are to try a new Google account, make sure it has admin access and complete every field of your business information.

The product details Google needs

Google splits product attributes into ones every product needs and ones that depend on what you sell.

AttributeWhen it's needed
id, title, link, descriptionEvery product
image linkEvery product; the image must be large enough and free of promotional content
price and availabilityEvery product
conditionIf the item is used or refurbished
brandIf the product is clearly branded
GTINIf the manufacturer assigned one
MPNIf there's no GTIN
multipack and bundleIf you sell multipacks or bundles
color, size, age group, genderApparel
item group IDProducts that come in variants

Shipping and returns

Google says shipping settings, or a shipping cost given through the shipping attribute, are required for free listings in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. That covers most English-speaking markets, so treat shipping as required. Google also recommends adding your return policy both in Merchant Center and on your website.

Store owners often add Shopify bundle apps too.

The catch: free listings aren't guaranteed

This is the part most guides skip. Google's help page says the free listings status gives permission to show your products but doesn't guarantee they'll be shown. Google relies on your product data to match your products to searches, so thin titles, missing identifiers or weak images mean fewer appearances. It cuts the other way too: Google may still show product information it has crawled from your store, and some Merchant Center details, even if you turn free listings off.

To check or change the setting on an existing account, go to Marketing, then Marketing methods, and look at the Free listings card. Changing it needs Admin access.

My verdict

For a small shop, Merchant Center is free reach and you'd be daft to skip it. Set it up once, carefully, on the right account and country, then spend your time on the product data: real GTINs, clean images and shipping that's filled in. It won't promise you sales or rankings, and nobody honest will either, but it puts your products where shoppers are already looking. If you're still choosing a platform, my comparison of Shopify and Squarespace looks at which suits a small store, and if you have a physical shop it's worth doing your Google business listing at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Merchant Center free?

Yes. Google describes Merchant Center as a free tool, and free listings let your products appear on Google at no cost. Shopping ads are a separate, paid option.

Can one Google login have more than one Merchant Center account?

No. Google says a single Google Account email can create only one Merchant Center account. One user can, however, be added to up to 100 Merchant Center accounts.

Can I change my Merchant Center country later?

No. Google says the country selected at account setup can't be changed later, so choose it carefully.

Will my products definitely show in free listings?

No. Google says the free listings status gives permission to show your products but doesn't guarantee they'll be shown. It relies on your product data to match searches.

Do I need shipping settings for free listings?

In many countries, yes. Google lists shipping settings or a shipping cost as required in markets including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand.
