Google AI Essentials is Google's 5-hour course for people new to AI: it covers the basics of generative AI, writing prompts and using AI tools for everyday tasks. The Google AI Professional Certificate is a separate 10-hour certificate built around work scenarios, and as of October 2026 small businesses can get it at no cost on strict terms.
If you've seen ten hours quoted for Essentials, that's the certificate. The two get mixed up a lot, so here's what each one is, who it suits, and the small print on the small-business offer before anyone on your team enters a card.
Four Google AI training routes side by side
| Route | Length or format | Who it's for | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Essentials | 5 hours (course) | People new to AI | Generative AI basics, writing prompts, using AI tools for ideas, content and daily tasks |
| AI Professional Certificate | 10 hours (certificate), 20 or more activities | People who'll use AI at work | Eight courses: planning, research, writing, content, data analysis, app building and deployment |
| AI for Small Businesses offer | No cost, enrol by December 15, 2026 | Verified small-business admins | The certificate plus 3 months of Google AI Pro and Workspace Business Standard, terms apply |
| Make AI Work for You | Free video series and a U.S. tour | Business owners | Gemini, Gemini Live, Workspace with Gemini and Gemini Notebook for finance, email, proposals and social posts |
All four are as Google lists them as of October 2026. Google describes its AI training as practical and hands-on, designed and taught by Google experts, and aimed at essential AI skills for everyone.
What the 5-hour Essentials course teaches
Google pitches Essentials at people who are new to AI. You learn the fundamentals of generative AI and practise using AI tools to develop new ideas, create content and speed up daily tasks. In its FAQ, Google says the course helps beginners get started with the basics, including writing prompts.
You don't need any AI experience to start, and you don't need to code. Google's point is that tools like Gemini let you use everyday language to summarise topics, generate content or answer questions. That makes Essentials the right first step for the colleague who's never opened an AI tool, and a slow one for the person who already prompts every day.
Inside the 10-hour AI Professional Certificate
The certificate is the work-skills option. Google says it's designed to teach the skills you need to use AI effectively at work, that it's validated by a coalition of America's biggest employers, and that it covers 20 or more work scenarios, such as creating marketing assets, vibe coding custom apps and conducting data analysis. It comes with 20 or more hands-on activities, and Google says enrolling gets you 3 months of Google AI Pro, terms apply.
Google's training overview lists the courses inside it:
- AI Fundamentals, the starting point.
- AI for Brainstorming and Planning.
- AI for Research and Insights, using Deep Research and Gemini Notebook.
- AI for Writing and Communicating.
- AI for Content Creation, covering images, video and presentations.
- AI for Data Analysis, with Gemini in Google Sheets.
- AI for App Building, which is vibe coding with no code written by hand.
- AI for App Deployment, which covers planning, testing and debugging apps in Google AI Studio.
Where Google's own pages disagree
Count that list and you get eight. Google's AI for Small Businesses page describes the same certificate as seven courses and 20 or more interactive activities. Neither page explains the gap, so if one colleague says seven and another says eight, they're both quoting Google. The hours are less murky: 5 hours belongs to Essentials and 10 hours to the certificate.
The small-business offer and its terms
Google's AI for Small Businesses page promises the AI Professional Certificate for free, plus three months of no-cost access to Google AI Pro and Google Workspace Business Standard, terms apply. It's pitched at teams, with the line "Help your employees become AI fluent with training designed by experts at Google", so staff can customise workflows, turn data into insights and vibe code apps for their job.
The terms, as of October 2026:
- Enrol by December 15, 2026 at 11:59 PM PT.
- Redeem by December 31, 2026 at 11:59 PM PT.
- Only verified small and medium business admins qualify, as defined by Google's scholarship program, and only on Coursera.
- It's limited to one per admin.
- Google and Coursera can modify or cancel the promotion at any time.
- A credit card is required to verify your identity and activate the account. Google says you won't be charged for the training, and that the card also eases a move to paid Coursera courses or subscriptions later.
That last point is the one to read twice. You're handing over a card to an account that's set up to make paid courses easy, so put a reminder in your diary before the trials end.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Free Make AI Work for You videos, tour and coaches
If you'd rather see examples from small businesses first, the Make AI Work for You video series is free to watch on Google's YouTube channel. Topics shown on the page include analysing finances in Gemini Notebook, writing and optimising emails with Gemini, drafting business proposals, brainstorming social posts, building an employee resources hub, building promotional videos in Google Vids, and turning meeting notes into follow-ups. The series teaches Gemini, Gemini Live, Google Workspace with Gemini and Gemini Notebook. Google notes that NotebookLM has been called Gemini Notebook since July 2026.
There's also a free in-person Make AI Work for You U.S. tour with local chambers of commerce. Past stops include Columbus OH, Dallas TX, Grinnell IA, Omaha NE, Richmond VA, San Diego CA and Washington D.C., with more planned for 2026. U.S. 501(c) organisations can request a workshop through the Grow with Google Partner Program, subject to availability. Grow with Google Coaches, who are local marketing experts and entrepreneurs, offer live training and hands-on coaching on topics such as improving productivity with AI, connecting with customers and selling online.
The same Google hub lists other courses too: AI for Educators (2 hours), Accelerate Your Job Search with AI (6 hours) and a new AI for Healthcare Professionals certificate carrying 5 CME credits. Google also says its Career Certificates in Data Analytics, IT Support, Project Management and Cybersecurity now include practical AI training.
How I'd roll it out to a team
- Decide who's a beginner and send them to AI Essentials first.
- Send people who already prompt daily, and need AI in their job, straight to the AI Professional Certificate.
- If you run a small business, check the offer terms before you click: enrol by December 15, 2026, one per admin, card required, Coursera only.
- Ask each person to finish one real work task with what they learned, within a week.
- Use the free Make AI Work for You videos for finance, email and proposal examples.
My verdict: I'd put anyone who's never written a prompt on Essentials, and I'd keep the certificate for people who'll use AI every week, because its courses map onto real jobs like research, writing, content and data analysis. I wouldn't treat a completion email as proof of anything. I'd ask for one piece of real work, done with the new skills, and judge that. If you're weighing other routes, my list of free AI certifications worth having and my guide to the best free and paid AI courses this year put Google's options next to the rest.
If you'd like a team trained on tools like these and then helped to use them on real work, that's the kind of thing I do. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement, AI automation and GEO, which is about getting your business seen and cited in AI answers. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams, telecom companies and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
