Free AI certifications worth getting include Anthropic Academy's Claude 101 and AI Fluency courses, Google's Introduction to Generative AI badge, Microsoft's Applied Skills credential for AI chat in Microsoft 365, HubSpot's AEO Fundamentals certification and IBM SkillsBuild's AI badges. Google AI Essentials, Azure AI Fundamentals and the AWS AI Practitioner exam aren't free.
The trap with this topic is simple: plenty of AI courses are free to watch, but far fewer give you a free certificate or badge you can show anyone. It's easy to spend a weekend on a course and only discover at the last screen that the certificate isn't included.
I've checked each option below on the provider's own page, and I've noted exactly what you get. Where something isn't free, I've said so, so you don't find out at the final screen. For a business owner, the aim isn't a wall of badges. It's one or two credentials that prove you can use AI sensibly, plus the skills behind them.
Which AI certifications are free?
These are the free options I found on the providers' own pages, with what each one gives you:
| Course | Provider | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Claude 101 | Anthropic Academy | Certificate of completion |
| AI Fluency: Framework and Foundations | Anthropic Academy | Certificate after a final assessment |
| AI Fluency for Small Businesses | Anthropic Academy | Certificate of completion |
| Introduction to Generative AI | Google Skills | Badge |
| Streamline business workflows with AI chat | Microsoft Learn | Applied Skills credential |
| AEO Fundamentals | HubSpot Academy | Certification |
| AI credentials such as AI Fundamentals | IBM SkillsBuild | Digital badge |
Anthropic Academy
Anthropic, the company behind Claude, runs free courses through its Academy. The course pages I checked, Claude 101, AI Fluency: Framework and Foundations, and AI Fluency for Small Businesses, all show free registration and include a certificate of completion. The AI Fluency course has a final assessment before the certificate.
For a small business owner, AI Fluency for Small Businesses is the obvious first pick. Anthropic doesn't list a duration on the course pages, so plan a couple of focused sessions rather than one sitting.
Google: Introduction to Generative AI
Google's Introduction to Generative AI is a short course on Google Skills, formerly Cloud Skills Boost. Google lists it at 45 minutes and you earn a badge at the end, and Google's own Grow with Google page describes it as free. It's a good grounding in what generative AI is and how it differs from other kinds of AI.
Be careful not to confuse it with Google AI Essentials. That one is hosted on Coursera, and the Coursera page says you can't take it for free, although financial aid is available.
Microsoft Learn
Microsoft's Applied Skills credentials are earned by passing an interactive, lab-based assessment rather than a traditional exam. One of them, Streamline business workflows with AI chat, tests your use of Copilot in Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel, which makes it practical for anyone in an office-based business. Microsoft described its AI-focused Applied Skills as free during its AI challenge, so check the assessment page before you start.
Microsoft Learn also has a free beginner learning path called Work smarter with AI. It earns a Learn achievement rather than a certification. The Azure AI Fundamentals certification is a full exam and isn't free.
HubSpot Academy
HubSpot offers two free certifications on answer engine optimisation: AEO Fundamentals, which isn't tied to any product, and Implementing AEO With HubSpot. If your goal is getting your business recommended by AI assistants, these are directly relevant. Pass both and HubSpot awards a combined dual-certified badge.
IBM SkillsBuild and Elements of AI
IBM SkillsBuild says its learning is completely free and issues digital badges through Credly for courses such as Artificial Intelligence Fundamentals and Getting Started with Generative AI. The badge page doesn't spell out whether every credential is free, so check before you enrol.
Elements of AI, from the University of Helsinki and MinnaLearn, offers a free online course called Introduction to AI for everyone. It's a respected starting point, but I couldn't confirm from its homepage whether the free course issues a certificate, and its Building AI course appears to charge for the certificate.
What to check before you enrol
- Is the certificate included? Look for the words certificate, badge or credential on the course page itself.
- Is there an assessment? Some certificates need a quiz or lab at the end, so leave time for it.
- Who issues it? A badge from the company that makes the tool carries more weight than an anonymous one.
- Is it current? AI tools change fast, so prefer courses that have been updated recently.
Which ones aren't free?
- Google AI Essentials on Coursera, which the course page says can't be taken for free.
- Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals, a full certification exam that isn't free.
- AWS Certified AI Practitioner: AWS includes free foundational training, but the certification itself needs the exam.
Is a free AI certification worth it for a business owner?
A certificate on its own won't win you clients. What it does is give you a structured way to learn, and a credential to mention on LinkedIn or your about page. The real value is what you can do afterwards. Pick one course that matches how you'll use AI, finish it, then apply it to a real job in your business that same week.
Copy this prompt
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
I've just finished [course name]. My business is [type of business].
Give me three ways to use what I learned this week, each one small enough to finish in an hour.
For each, tell me what good looks like so I know it worked.
If you're starting from zero, my guide on how to use AI as a business owner pairs well with any of these courses.
Which one should I start with?
- You're brand new to AI: start with Google's Introduction to Generative AI for the basics, then Anthropic's AI Fluency for Small Businesses.
- You live in Microsoft 365: go for the Applied Skills credential on AI chat, because it tests the tools you already use.
- You want customers to find you through AI assistants: HubSpot's AEO Fundamentals is the most relevant.
- You use Claude every day: Claude 101 will fill the gaps in how you use it.
Whichever you pick, finish one before starting another. A completed course you've put into practice beats three you started.
How do I add an AI certification to LinkedIn?
Most providers give you a certificate or a badge link. Add it under Licences and certifications on your LinkedIn profile, with the provider's name and the date you completed it. Then write a short post about one thing you'll do differently because of it. That post does more for your credibility than the badge.
Copy and paste this prompt
Write a short LinkedIn post about finishing [course name] from [provider].
Mention one specific thing I learned and how I'll use it in my [type of business].
Keep it humble, under [number] words, with no hashtags in the body.
Tools that work with these courses
To practise what you learn, use the assistants the courses teach: Claude for the Anthropic courses, Gemini for Google's, and Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft's. Notion or Google Docs keep your course notes and favourite prompts in one place, Credly holds digital badges, and LinkedIn is where most people display them. If you want more structure for writing prompts, my prompt engineering cheat sheet is a handy companion.
If you'd rather have AI training built around your own team and tools, this is how I work with business owners.
