When Gmail says your storage is full, it's your whole Google Account that's full: a personal account gets up to 15 GB shared across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos, and once it's used up you can't send or receive email. The fastest fix is to empty Trash and Spam in Gmail, then Trash in Drive and Photos, because those items count against you until they're permanently cleared.
Here's the catch. When your account is full, messages sent to you go back to the sender, so you don't just stop receiving email, people trying to reach you get a bounce. And if you stay over your quota for 2 years, Google might delete your content across Gmail, Drive and Photos.
What shares your 15 GB
| Item | Counts against your storage? As of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Gmail messages and attachments, including Spam and Trash | Yes |
| Files in Google Drive, including PDFs, images and videos | Yes |
| Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms and similar files | Yes if created or edited after June 1, 2021; no if last edited before |
| Google Photos in Original quality | Yes |
| Storage saver and Express photos and videos | Yes if backed up after June 1, 2021; no if before |
| Meet call recordings | Yes |
| WhatsApp backups on Android | Yes |
| Android backups: SMS and MMS, call logs, device settings and app data | Yes |
| Files other people share with you | No, only the owner's storage |
That table explains a classic frustration. If you delete thousands of photos backed up in High quality or Express before June 1, 2021, your storage barely moves, because they never counted. Old photo libraries backed up in Original quality still take up space even if you never look at them.
What to clear first
This is the order I'd work in, built from Google's short-term and long-term fixes:
- Empty Gmail Trash and Spam. It's the quickest way to recover space, since those folders count until you clear them.
- Empty Trash in Google Drive and in Google Photos.
- Find one or two emails with very large attachments you no longer need and delete them.
- Wait. If your account is still full after 30 minutes, move on to a deeper clean with the Storage Manager.
- Shrink your WhatsApp backup if you're on Android.
- Download anything you want to keep to your own device, then delete it from your cloud storage.
For the inbox itself, here's my guide on deleting all emails in Gmail in bulk, and if Drive is the bigger culprit, this one on freeing up space on Google Drive.
Using the Storage Manager in Google One
The Storage Manager shows how much space you're using in Gmail, Drive and Photos, with links to free up space next to each service.
- On your computer, go to Google One and click Storage.
- Under Get your space back, click Free up account storage.
- Under Clean up suggested items or Clean up by service, pick a category or service.
- Select the files to delete. You can sort them and switch between list and grid view.
- For Google Photos, click Download first if you want a local copy.
- Click Delete, or Move to trash for Photos, tick the box to confirm and click Permanently delete.
WhatsApp backups: change the setting first
If you delete a WhatsApp backup from Google but don't change the app's settings, a new backup appears the next time your phone backs up. Videos usually take up the most space, so in WhatsApp go to Settings, Chats, Chat backup, turn off Include videos and tap Back Up now. Then manage the old backup files in Google One's storage management.
Be careful here. Deleting a WhatsApp backup is permanent, and you'll lose your chat history if you change phones or reinstall WhatsApp before you make a new one. Backups that haven't been updated in 5 months may be deleted automatically.
What stops working when you're over quota
- You can't upload new files or images to Google Drive.
- You can't back up photos and videos to Google Photos.
- Your ability to send and receive email in Gmail can be affected.
- You can't create new files in Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms, Vids and Pics, and nobody can edit or copy your affected files.
- You can't back up new Recorder files.
You can still sign in to your Google Account. Before any content is removed after 2 years over quota, Google contacts you at least 3 months before it's eligible for deletion and gives you the chance to clear space, buy storage or download your data.
Why your space doesn't drop straight away
After you delete a lot of files at once, allow up to 48 to 72 hours for your storage to update. If you use Drive for desktop, the number on your computer won't match your Google storage either, because syncing uses your hard drive, not your quota, and only files you own count toward your Google storage.

If clearing space isn't enough, Google One is the subscription that adds storage across Gmail, Drive and Photos, and how much you get depends on the plan you choose. If you're weighing that up, here's my take on whether Gmail is free.
My verdict on a full Gmail account
I'd empty every Trash and Spam folder first and give it 30 minutes, because that often gets email flowing again on its own. If it doesn't, I'd open the Storage Manager and go after big attachments and old WhatsApp backups before touching photos. Only pay for more storage once you've seen what's taking the space, and don't wait: a full account bounces every email sent to you.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Gmail storage full when I don't have many emails?

How do I free up Gmail storage fast?
Empty your Gmail Trash and Spam, then Drive and Photos Trash, and delete one or two emails with very large attachments you no longer need.
Why hasn't my storage gone down after deleting files?
Allow up to 48 to 72 hours for your storage to update after deleting multiple files at once.
Will Google delete my emails if my storage stays full?
