To draw in Canva, open your design, select Tools from the side panel, then choose Draw and pick a Pen, Marker or Highlighter. Drag across the page to draw, hold Shift for a straight line, and select the Select icon when you're finished. Draw works in every design type except Canva Docs.
Sometimes a template feels too tidy. A hand-drawn arrow, a circled number or a scribbled underline can make a social post or slide feel human, and Canva's Draw tool does it without any extra app.
How to draw in Canva, step by step
- Open the design you want to draw on.
- In the editor side panel, select Tools.
- Choose Draw.
- Pick a Pen, Marker or Highlighter, and tap the colour tile to choose a colour.
- Select Settings to change the thickness or transparency.
- Click and drag on the page to draw. Hold Shift for a perfectly straight line.
- Select the Select icon to leave drawing mode.
Once you've stopped drawing, each stroke behaves like any other Canva element. You can click it, move it, resize it or delete it.
The drawing tools and what they're for
| Tool | Best for |
|---|---|
| Pen | Clean lines, signatures, outlines |
| Marker | Bold arrows and circles that grab attention |
| Highlighter | See-through strokes over text or screenshots |
| Eraser | Rubbing out parts of a drawing |
Make shaky drawings look neat with shape assist
Mouse drawings rarely look smooth. Canva has a trick for that: draw a shape and pause at the end for 1 second. Canva's shape assist then tidies it into a clean version. According to Canva's help centre it works for rectangles, arrows, triangles, circles, stars, lines, hearts and diamonds.
It's handy for pointing arrows at a button on a screenshot or circling a key number in a chart, without the result looking like a toddler drew it.
How to erase a drawing in Canva
- Select Draw again.
- Choose the Eraser.
- Drag over the part you want to remove.
- Select the cursor to apply the change.
To remove a whole stroke, it's quicker to leave drawing mode, click the stroke and press Delete.
The catch: there's a limit on how much you can draw
If you're sketching a lot, for example a full illustration or a detailed whiteboard, you can hit a wall. Canva's help centre says drawings stop saving once a design passes its stroke limit of 1 MB. If your design suddenly won't save, delete some strokes or duplicate the design and carry on in the copy. For anything heavier than doodles and annotations, draw in a dedicated app and upload the image instead.
Drawing while you present
You can also draw live during a presentation using Draw on page, which is great for workshops. Just know that those strokes are temporary. Canva says they aren't saved when you exit presentation mode, so screenshot anything you want to keep.
Tips for neater drawing on a computer
- Zoom in before drawing fine details. With a mouse, hold Ctrl and scroll. On a trackpad, pinch to zoom.
- Use a lower transparency for highlighter effects over photos.
- Keep arrow colours consistent with your brand so annotations look deliberate.
- If you're drawing on a phone or tablet, use a stylus for far smoother lines.
Draw vs Shapes and Lines: which to use
The Tools panel holds more than the pen. Canva groups Draw alongside Shapes, Lines, Sticky notes, Text and Tables. If you need a perfect circle, a crisp arrow or a box with text inside it, a shape or line will always look cleaner than a hand-drawn one and it's easier to edit later. Save Draw for the moments when you want it to look hand-made: a quick tick, a loose circle around a word, a signature-style flourish.
Drawing together on a whiteboard
Draw is at its best on a Canva whiteboard during a planning session. Everyone can sketch ideas at the same time, and Canva shows who's drawing by their cursor, so you can follow along. I like to give each person a different pen colour so it's obvious later whose idea was whose. When you're done, tidy the best sketches into shapes and text so the board still makes sense next week.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Drawing on a phone or tablet
On a phone or tablet the steps are the same: open the design, find Tools, choose Draw and use your finger or a stylus. A stylus makes a big difference to how smooth the lines look. If you're adding handwriting, zoom in first and write larger than you think you need to, then shrink the stroke down afterwards.
Fun ways business owners use Draw
- Circling the key result on a screenshot for a social post.
- Adding a handwritten signature line to a thank-you graphic.
- Sketching quick process diagrams on a whiteboard design with your team.
- Underlining one word in a quote graphic for emphasis. My tips on writing Instagram quotes that get shared pair nicely with this.
My verdict
Canva's Draw tool is perfect for quick annotations and a personal touch, and shape assist rescues most wobbly mouse drawings. It isn't an illustration app, so if you're creating detailed artwork, make it elsewhere and bring it in. For screenshots and walkthroughs, pair it with one of the screen recording tools I rate.
