GEO for Coaches and Consultants

GEO for coaches and consultants means getting named when people ask AI engines who to hire for a problem you solve. Win it with a clear answer-first description of who you help and how, real client outcomes, Person and Service schema, question-based FAQ content, and mentions on podcasts and editorial sites the AI already trusts.

The short version: GEO for coaches and consultants is about being the name AI gives when someone asks "who can help me with X". You sell expertise, which means your visibility is your reputation, and reputation is exactly what the AI engines reward. The work is readable pages, content that proves you know your stuff, and your name on the sources AI trusts. I have built my own reputation this way for twenty-one years. Here is how to do it, and you can check whether AI names you now, free, with my AI visibility tool.

Why this matters so much for people who sell expertise

When you sell coaching or consulting, you are not selling a product on a shelf. You are selling you. So when a potential client asks AI "who is a good consultant for X" or "who can help me fix Y", that answer is your reputation read out loud. If your name is in it, you have credibility before you have said a word. If it is not, someone else gets the call.

And here is what I love about this for coaches and consultants. The thing AI rewards, being known and trusted on a topic, is the exact thing you have been building anyway. You are closer to this than you think.

What is different about GEO for coaches and consultants

You are the brand, so your name is the keyword

Most GEO advice is written for companies. For you, it is personal. The engines need to associate your name with your topic. That means your name on podcasts, in features, in expert commentary, on the sources that cover your field.

Your expertise is your content

You almost certainly have talks, posts, frameworks and answers sitting in your head or scattered across platforms. The engines quote clear, specific, expert content. Getting yours onto clean, readable pages that answer real client questions is half the battle, and you already have the raw material.

Trust signals carry extra weight

Who you have worked with, where you have been featured, what results you have helped create. These are the signals that tell an engine you are the real thing. Make them visible and clear.

How to do GEO as a coach or consultant

1. Run your name and the problems you solve through an AI visibility checker. See whether AI names you, who it names instead, and which sources it pulls from. 2. Fix your foundations so the engines can read you. A clear, structured site that opens with plain answers to the questions your clients ask. 3. Get your name onto the sources AI trusts for your field. Podcasts, features, expert roundups, the publications your world reads. This is the reputation work, and it is the part that decides it. 4. Publish content that proves your expertise, built around real client questions. 5. Re-check monthly and keep building.

What I keep seeing coaches and consultants get wrong

They wait until they feel "ready" or "established enough". I understand the feeling, I have had it. But AI is naming whoever has done the visible work, not whoever feels the most qualified. The quiet expert loses to the visible one every time. You do not need to be the most famous person in your field. You need your name in the right places, and that is a thing you can start this week.

How this fits the bigger picture

GEO for coaches and consultants is the same craft as any GEO, pointed at your reputation. Start with what generative engine optimisation is, and read how to get cited by ChatGPT since so much expert discovery starts there.

FAQ

What is GEO for coaches and consultants? It is getting your name given by AI when someone asks who can help with your area. It means readable pages, expert content, and your name on the sources AI trusts for your field. Check where you stand with a free tool.

I am a personal brand, does GEO work differently for me? Yes, your name is the keyword. The work focuses on associating your name with your topic through features, podcasts, expert commentary and clear content.

Why does AI name another consultant and not me? Usually because they appear on the sources AI trusts for that topic and you do not yet. The fix is to get your name onto those same sources.

Do I need to be famous for AI to name me? No. You need to be visible in the right places on your topic. That is reputation work, not fame, and you can start it now.

The One Prompt Type That Gets Coaches Cited in AI Answers (With a Real Example)

Most coaches trying to rank in AI-generated answers focus on stuffing their website with keywords like "executive coach" or "business consultant." That is the wrong instinct. AI models like ChatGPT and Perplexity pull citations from sources that answer a specific, decision-stage question better than anything else on the web. The prompt type that works is what I call the "should I" question: "Should I hire a business coach or a consultant?", "Should I work with an executive coach before a promotion?", "Should I use a coach or a therapist for burnout?" These questions have real search volume and, more importantly, they are the exact prompts AI users type when they are close to buying.

Here is a concrete example. A leadership coach I worked with published a 900-word page titled "Should I Hire a Leadership Coach or an Executive Consultant? Here is the Honest Difference." Within six weeks, that single page was being cited verbatim in Perplexity answers to that exact question. The page was not optimized for Google in any traditional sense. It had no backlinks. What it had was a crisp comparison table, a direct opinion ("for most mid-level managers, a coach will outperform a consultant in year one because accountability beats strategy delivery"), and three specific client scenarios with outcomes. That combination of opinion plus specificity plus scenario is what AI models treat as authoritative.

To replicate this, pick three "should I" questions your ideal client types before they book a discovery call. Write one focused page per question. Each page needs:

  • A direct answer in the first 60 words, not a preamble
  • At least one named comparison (you versus another approach, not just abstract options)
  • One real scenario with a specific result ("a client reduced decision-making time by 40% after 8 sessions")
  • Your honest opinion, stated plainly, even if it is not flattering to your own offer

The honest opinion part is what most coaches skip because it feels risky. It is your biggest competitive advantage in GEO. AI models are trained to surface nuanced, balanced answers. A page that says "coaching is not right for you if you need a deliverable by Q3, hire a consultant instead" will get cited far more than a page that sells coaching unconditionally. You build trust with the AI the same way you build trust with a client: by telling them something true that costs you something to say.

And if the AI you want to be visible in is also the AI you should be using in your own practice, that is exactly what I cover as an AI implementation coach for founders.

The short version: GEO helps coaches and consultants get cited by AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity when potential clients ask for recommendations. It works alongside SEO, focusing on clear expertise signals, structured content, and answers phrased the way people ask questions.

Frequently asked questions

What is GEO and how is it different from SEO?

GEO, or generative engine optimisation, is about making your content easy for AI tools to find, understand, and quote when someone asks a question related to your expertise. SEO focuses on ranking in search results pages, while GEO focuses on being the source an AI pulls from when generating an answer. For coaches and consultants, this means the goal shifts from getting clicks to getting mentioned by name as a trusted expert.

Why does GEO matter for coaches and consultants specifically?

Many people now ask AI tools things like "who's a good business coach for startups" or "recommend a marketing consultant." If your content isn't structured in a way that answers those questions clearly, you simply won't come up. Since coaching and consulting rely heavily on trust and reputation, being cited by an AI as a credible answer can carry real weight with a potential client who's doing early research.

What kind of content helps with GEO?

Content that answers specific questions directly, in plain language, tends to perform well. Case studies, FAQs, clear bios that state your niche and credentials, and blog posts structured with headings and concise answers all help. It's less about keyword density and more about being useful and easy to extract information from, whether that's a definition, a process, or a recommendation.

How long does it take to see results from GEO efforts?

There's no fixed timeline, since it depends on how much authoritative content you already have and how competitive your niche is. Some coaches notice mentions in AI-generated answers within a few months of restructuring their content, while others take longer. Consistency matters more than speed here, since AI tools tend to favour sources that show sustained expertise over time rather than a single optimised page.
