AEO is about being the quoted answer: the featured snippet, the voice reply, the AI Overview. GEO is about being named and cited when tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Mode write an answer from scratch. Most of the work overlaps, and SEO is the foundation under both.
If you've seen both acronyms in one article and wondered whether you need two strategies, you don't. You need one good foundation and two slightly different targets on top of it.
What AEO means
AEO is answer engine optimisation. The aim is simple: when someone asks a question, your page supplies the answer that gets shown or read out. That includes featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice assistants and the summaries Google puts above the results.
The work is mostly on the page. You answer first, use question headings, keep the structure tidy and add FAQ schema. I've explained the basics in my guide to what AEO is.
It's the older and more established of the two ideas. Featured snippets and People Also Ask have been around for years, so you can see what winning looks like and copy the pattern.
What GEO means
GEO is generative engine optimisation. The aim is to be named, recommended or cited when an AI tool generates an answer rather than pulling one passage from a page. Think of someone asking an assistant to suggest consultants, tools or shops, and your business appearing in the reply.
GEO leans on more than your own pages. These tools form a view of who you are from across the web, so brand mentions on other trusted sites and a clear, consistent description of your business count for a lot.
Unlike a snippet, a generated answer doesn't belong to one page. The tool blends what it knows and what it finds, and then names a few sources or businesses. So the question changes from "is my page the best match?" to "does this tool know what my business is and trust it?"
Where AEO and GEO overlap
This is the part that saves you effort. Most of the work serves both:
- Pages that state the answer plainly, near the top
- Question-style headings that match how people ask
- FAQ content with matching schema
- A crawlable site that AI crawlers and search engines can both read
- Clear details about who you are, what you do and who you do it for
- Mentions of your brand on other trusted websites
- Original, experienced content that's worth quoting
The difference is emphasis. AEO is more about page structure. GEO is more about reputation and how clearly machines understand your brand. If you want to see the tools people use to track this, I've listed them in my round-up of GEO and AEO tools.
So in practice, nobody does AEO or GEO in isolation. You strengthen the shared base, and then you decide where to put the extra effort.
Which one should a small business focus on?
It depends on how your customers find you. Here are three common cases.
A local service business
Lean on SEO and AEO. People search with a question and a place, and the answers come from your pages, your Google Business Profile and your reviews. Get the basics right, answer the common questions clearly, then keep your business details identical everywhere so the AI tools describe you correctly.
A consultancy that sells to other businesses
Give GEO more weight. Buyers increasingly ask an assistant to shortlist providers before they ever visit a site. You want to be one of the names that comes up, which means clear positioning, articles that show your expertise and mentions on respected sites in your field.

An online shop
Split the effort. AEO helps your product and advice pages answer the questions shoppers ask before buying. GEO helps when people ask an assistant what to buy, so reviews, comparison content and clear product details matter. Make your product information easy to read and consistent.
Whichever case sounds like you, don't skip the foundation. If the site is slow to load, hard to crawl or thin on useful content, neither AEO nor GEO has anything good to build on.
AEO vs GEO vs SEO side by side
Here's how the three compare. I've kept it to the differences that affect what you do day to day.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it optimises for | Being found and ranked in search results | Being the quoted answer on the results page and in voice | Being named and cited in AI-generated answers |
| Typical result | Rankings, impressions, clicks and visits | Featured snippets, People Also Ask spots, AI Overview citations | Brand mentions and links inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and AI Mode answers |
| Main levers | Content, technical health, links, page experience | Answer-first writing, question headings, FAQ schema, clean structure | Brand mentions across the web, entity clarity, quotable original content, crawler access |
Why I treat them as one job
I'd rather show you than tell you. The clearest signal on my own site is the AI side. Visits from AI assistants went from 32 a month in January 2026 to 3,599 in September 2026. Of those, ChatGPT sent 29 in January and 3,267 in September.
That growth sat on top of ordinary search work. My average Google position moved from 27.2 to 16.5 over the same period. I didn't build a separate GEO site. I improved the foundation, made the pages easy to quote and made it clear what I do and who I do it for, so the assistants had something solid to describe. If you want the working, here's how I did it, step by step.
If a business wants to be named by AI tools, my generative engine optimisation service is built around exactly this.
Not sure where your own business stands between the two? I'm happy to take a look with you and talk it through. You'll find the ways I work with businesses here.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO the same as AEO?
No, but they overlap. AEO is about being the quoted answer in snippets, voice results and AI Overviews. GEO is about being named and cited inside answers that tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude generate.
Should a small business do AEO or GEO first?
Start with SEO, then AEO, because clear answers on a well-built site help with everything else. Add the GEO work, the brand mentions and the clear description of who you are, once the pages are in good shape.
Do I need a different strategy for each AI assistant?
Not at the start. The same basics apply across them: clear pages, a consistent brand and mentions on other trusted sites. Tune for individual tools only once you can see where you're appearing.
Can I measure GEO?
Partly. You can test the questions your customers ask in each assistant, track which brands get named, and look for referral visits from AI assistants in your analytics. It's less exact than rankings, so treat it as a trend.
