Gemini Code Assist is Google's AI coding assistant for IDEs like Visual Studio Code and IntelliJ IDEA, sold in Standard and Enterprise editions through Google Cloud. It's being wound down: the free tier for individuals stopped serving requests on 18 June 2026, and from 9 October 2026 new Standard and Enterprise subscriptions can no longer be bought. Google now points developers to Antigravity.
A lot of the pages ranking for Gemini Code Assist were written before these changes, so they still tell you to install the free extension. Here's where things stand, straight from Google's release notes, and what it means if you or your developers rely on it. Even Google's own pricing page still points individuals to a free version, while the release notes say that tier has stopped.
The timeline
| Date | What changed |
|---|---|
| 14 October 2025 | Gemini Code Assist tools were removed and replaced by agent mode (Preview) |
| 18 June 2026 | The IDE extensions and Gemini CLI stopped serving requests for the individuals, Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra tiers |
| 9 October 2026 | New Standard and Enterprise subscriptions can no longer be purchased |
| Rest of 2026 | Existing subscriptions keep auto-renewing |
| 2027 | Auto-renewal ends |
Google's note says it has unified its tools into a single multi-agent platform called Antigravity, with an Antigravity CLI, and that affected users should migrate to them.
Standard vs Enterprise
| Standard | Enterprise | |
|---|---|---|
| Code completion, generation and chat in the IDE | Yes | Yes |
| Agent mode and Gemini CLI | Yes | Yes, with higher daily usage limits |
| Gemini in Firebase and Colab Enterprise | Yes | Yes |
| Enterprise-grade security and indemnification for code suggestions | Yes | Yes |
| Code customisation from your private repositories | No | Yes |
| Integrations across more Google Cloud services | No | Yes |
Gemini CLI, which both editions include, is Google's open-source AI agent for the terminal. Both editions came with a yearly or monthly commitment, and Google bills them per licence through the Google Cloud console's Admin for Gemini page, where admins also assign licences to users.
What this means if you already pay for it
- Your existing Standard or Enterprise subscription keeps working and auto-renewing through the rest of 2026.
- Plan your move before 2027, when auto-renewal ends.
- Try Antigravity on a real project now, so you're not switching under pressure.
- Check whether your company already has access through another Google product before buying anything new.
That last point matters. Google's Gemini Enterprise FAQ says its Standard and Plus editions include Gemini Code Assist, so a business already on those editions may be covered. My guide to whether Google Antigravity is free covers the replacement.
Is it still being updated?
Yes, for now. Google's release notes still show maintenance releases for paying customers: version 2.104.0 of the VS Code extension on 8 October 2026 and version 1.59.0 of the IntelliJ plugin on 15 September 2026, both listed as bug fixes and minor improvements. That fits a product being kept running for existing subscribers rather than developed further, so don't expect big new features.
If you manage licences, admins can still view, assign and unassign them on the Admin for Gemini page in the Google Cloud console, or through the billingAccounts.orders API.
What this means if you used the free version
If you installed Gemini Code Assist for individuals in VS Code or used it through a Google AI Pro or Ultra plan, it stopped answering on 18 June 2026. Google's pricing page still points individuals to a separate free version site, but the release notes are clear that the individual tier no longer serves requests. Moving to Antigravity is Google's own recommendation.
What Antigravity is
Google describes Antigravity as its agentic development platform for the agent-first era, available on macOS, Windows, Linux and Googlebook. It comes in a few forms: an agent manager for running several local agents in parallel, a terminal-first CLI for coding agents and shell commands, a full agentic IDE, and a way to prototype custom agents with simple Python scripts. Google pitches it at everyone from enterprise developers to hobbyists vibe-coding in their spare time.
For companies, Google's release notes say Antigravity is available through eligible Gemini Enterprise subscriptions and through Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform.
Agent mode, briefly
Before the wind-down, the biggest change was agent mode: Google describes it as a multi-step, collaborative, reasoning agent that goes beyond simple command-and-response chat. It replaced the older Code Assist tools, which you used to call with the @ symbol, on 14 October 2025. If an old tutorial tells you to type @ and a tool name, that no longer works.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Should a small business care?
Only if someone on your team writes code. If you have a developer or agency using Gemini Code Assist on your website or app, ask them now what they'll move to and when. If you're a non-developer looking for an AI coding tool, don't start with Gemini Code Assist in 2026. Compare current options instead, such as Gemini CLI vs Claude Code.
My verdict
Gemini Code Assist is a product with an end date. If you're paying for it, you've got until 2027 to move, so test Antigravity now on a low-risk project. If you're new, skip it and pick a tool that's still being sold.
If you'd like help choosing which AI tools your team should use and setting them up around the way you work, here's how we can work together.
