Free Recipe Card Makers (2026): 10 Tools Compared

A recipe card maker turns a recipe into a neat card you can print, frame or share, with the ingredients, method and a photo laid out clearly. Some are design tools with templates, some turn a web link into a card and some are recipe apps that print whole cookbooks. Ten options follow in no particular order.

A grandmother's handwritten recipes, a bake sale table or a wedding shower where every guest brings a dish they love. Recipe cards turn up in all sorts of places, and a typed card's much easier to read when you've got flour on your hands.

The ten tools below cover design templates, recipe card generators, recipe manager apps and printed card shops. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website or store listing, read this week. If you're cooking for the week ahead, my ideas for what to make for dinner are a handy companion.

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website or store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page says the tool, or a plan, account or version of it, is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Add an allergens line if anyone will buy the food

The Food Standards Agency says UK food businesses must tell customers under food law if they use any of the 14 regulated allergens. The list includes celery, cereals containing gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, lupin, milk, molluscs, mustard, peanuts, sesame, soybeans, sulphur dioxide and sulphites, and tree nuts.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Home recipe cards don't need to follow food law, but a bake sale, a market stall or a cafe counter is a different story. A recipe card is a handy place to flag which of those allergens are in the dish, and it helps any guest with an allergy at a family party too. Add a short Contains line under the ingredients, using the FSA's list as your checklist.

Design template, recipe app or printed cards?

A design template gives you a pretty card you'll fill in yourself, which suits a handful of special recipes or a gift.

A recipe app stores everything you cook, plans meals and prints recipes or whole cookbooks, which suits people with dozens of recipes.

Printed cards from a shop give you a matching set on good card stock, and they're often sold with a box or binder to keep them in.

Six things every recipe card should show

  1. The dish name and how many it serves.
  2. Prep and cooking times.
  3. Ingredients in the order you use them.
  4. Short, numbered steps.
  5. The oven temperature, if there is one.
  6. Who the recipe came from.

Signs a recipe card needs rewriting

  • A step says 'cook until done'. Add a time or test.
  • Ingredients are out of order. Match the method.
  • The text is tiny. Split it over two cards.
  • Allergens aren't flagged. Add a Contains line.

Do you make recipe card tools? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on making recipe cards

Type the recipe exactly as the cook makes it, then test it once from the card alone. If you need to ask a question halfway through, the card is missing a step. For family recipes, keep a photo of the original handwritten card on the back, because that's often the part people treasure.

If the cards are part of a wider meal plan, my prompts for planning a week of dinners help fill the rest of the week.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a recipe card for free?

Use a free recipe card template, type in the ingredients and steps, add a photo and print it on card.

What size is a recipe card?

Common sizes are small index card formats, but check your template or binder before you print.

Can I turn a recipe website into a card?

Yes. Some tools take a recipe link, text or photo and turn it into a printable card.

What should go on a recipe card?

The dish name, servings, times, ingredients, numbered steps and the oven temperature.

Do I need to list allergens on a recipe card?

Not for home use, but UK food businesses must tell customers about the 14 regulated allergens, so it helps if you sell the food.

Can I make a family cookbook from recipe cards?

Yes. Some recipe apps print your recipes as a cookbook or save them as a PDF.
