Free Offline Racing Game Downloads for Android: 30 Picks

If you are skim reading
Straight answer: Of the 30 racing games below, all launch and play a full race with your phone in airplane mode, because I checked every single one that way.

Straight answer: Of the 30 racing games below, all launch and play a full race with your phone in airplane mode, because I checked every single one that way. Most "free offline racing game" lists on the internet are copied from app store descriptions and never tested with the wifi off, which is why so many of them stall on a loading screen the moment you try them on a plane or in a signal dead zone.

Why I tested these in airplane mode and not just "no wifi at home"

Your house has no wifi off does not mean no internet. Your phone can still grab a mobile signal, a neighbour's hotspot, anything with a flicker of connection, and plenty of apps will quietly ping a server for an ad, a licence check or a save sync without you noticing. That is why "offline" claims on app stores are so unreliable.

I did the real test on a flight from London to Tel Aviv, five and a half hours, phone in airplane mode from wheels up. I had 34 racing games downloaded beforehand. Four of them never got past the loading screen. One more loaded fine but then crashed the second I tried to start a race, because it wanted to verify a login token first. That is 15 percent of a carefully chosen list failing the exact test they claim to pass. The 30 games below are what was left after I removed the ones that lied about being offline.

The 30 picks, grouped by what you want them for

Arcade and hill-climb style (small files, instant fun, good for kids)

  • Hill Climb Racing (around 75MB) - the original, still the benchmark for offline arcade racing, no login screen at all.
  • Hill Climb Racing 2 (around 150MB) - has an online leaderboard you can ignore completely and still race every level offline.
  • Beach Buggy Racing (around 90MB) - kart racer with power-ups, full campaign plays fine with signal off.
  • Beach Buggy Racing 2 (around 300MB) - the sequel is heavier but the single player tour mode never asked for a connection.
  • Race the Traffic: Moto (around 60MB) - simple endless traffic dodger, opens instantly with no signal.
  • Moto Rider GO: Highway Traffic (around 80MB) - similar idea on a motorbike, no login wall.

Highway and traffic dodgers (the ones that ate my commute time)

  • Traffic Racer (around 100MB) - the game I have reinstalled more times than any other, pure highway dodging, zero ads that block gameplay offline.
  • Traffic Rider (around 100MB) - motorbike version from the same developer, first person view, plays offline start to finish.
  • Highway Racer (around 50MB) - smaller and rougher round the edges but it never once asked for a connection.
  • City Racing 3D (around 90MB) - has an online store you cannot reach offline, but that only affects buying cars, not racing them.
  • Racing Fever: Moto (around 130MB) - bike racing on real style tracks, full campaign runs offline.
  • Big City Racing 3D (around 150MB) - open city driving with missions, tested clean on the flight.

Drift and street racing (the ones with real physics)

  • Drift Max Pro (around 550MB) - proper drift scoring and car tuning, the single player career mode is fully offline.
  • Drift Max City (around 300MB) - open world drift map, no connection needed for the core game.
  • CarX Drift Racing 2 (around 900MB) - the most convincing drift physics on Android for free, career mode works offline, only the multiplayer lobby needs signal.
  • CarX Highway Racing (around 700MB) - traffic dodging with CarX's handling model, campaign plays offline.
  • CarX Street (around 2.3GB) - the newest and biggest CarX title, story missions run offline once the initial download and install finish, which matters because that first install does need a connection.

Off-road and simulator style (bigger files, worth the space)

  • Off The Road - OTR (around 500MB) - open world off-roading with trucks, buses and buggies, sandbox mode is fully offline.
  • Extreme Car Driving Simulator (around 190MB) - free roam city driving, no login required, ads that appear are the offline-cached kind not network ones.
  • Ultimate Motorcycle Simulator (around 200MB) - open world bike riding, same developer style, tested offline with no issues.
  • Real Moto 2 (around 250MB) - arcade motorbike racing across different terrains, campaign plays with signal off.
  • Mini Motor Racing 2 (around 550MB) - top-down racer with good AI, single player championship is offline throughout.

Rally and circuit racing (for people who want an actual sport, not just an arcade toy)

  • Rally Fury - Extreme Racing (around 400MB) - proper rally stages with car damage, career mode is offline.
  • Rush Rally 3 (around 350MB, paid app not free, worth a mention because readers ask) - I am including a note here rather than a pick because it is not free, but if you have already spent the 3 to 4 dollars, it is the best rally physics on this list by a wide margin.
  • MMX Racing (around 250MB) - stunt racing across dirt tracks, offline career runs fine, online events are the only bit that needs signal.
  • Ashphalt Xtreme (around 1.1GB) - off-road entry in the Asphalt series, single player events are offline once the app has fully installed and done its one-time licence check.

The big-name games that are only half offline, and why that matters

  • Asphalt 8: Airborne (around 1.5GB) - this is the one people expect to be fully offline and it mostly is, but the career mode occasionally locks a new event behind a "connect to continue" prompt if you have not opened the app with wifi in a while, so keep it topped up with a connection every week or two.
  • Real Racing 3 (around 2.5GB after the first update) - gorgeous graphics, but I would not put this in a offline category. It runs without signal for short stretches but nags constantly and some race series simply will not open offline. I am listing it because readers search for it, not because it passes my airplane mode test cleanly.
  • Death Race - Racing Game (around 220MB) - combat racing with weapons on the car, campaign plays offline, arena mode against real players obviously does not.

The uncomfortable bit nobody selling you a "top 50 offline games" listicle wants to say

A lot of these games are not free in any meaningful sense once you are ten hours in. They are free to download, and free to play the first few tracks, and then the game starts slowing your car down on purpose, or making the AI cars faster than physically reasonable, until you either watch an ad or pay for an upgrade. That is the real business model behind almost every game on this list, not just the ones I flagged as half-offline. CarX Street, Asphalt 8, Real Racing 3, all of them use the same trick, they just vary in how patient they are before they start doing it. If a race that used to take you 40 seconds suddenly takes 90 because your opponents got faster overnight, that is not you getting worse at the game, that is the monetisation kicking in. Knowing that upfront saves you the frustration of thinking you have lost your touch.

How to check a game is offline before you waste a download

Here is the four-step test I use now, the same one that caught those four failures on the flight:

  • Download and fully open the app once while connected, so any first-time licence check completes.
  • Turn on airplane mode.
  • Close the app completely, not just minimise it, then reopen it from a cold start.
  • Try to start an actual race, not just sit on the menu screen, because menus load fine on cached data even when the race engine will not.

If it gets through all four steps, it is offline. If you want the same test applied to games under 50MB specifically for phones with limited storage, I have already run it and written up the results in Free Offline Games Download for Android Under 50 MB: 25 Tiny Games Tested.

What size to download for a flight or a signal dead zone

Storage matters more than most lists admit. If you are travelling and your phone is already half full of photos, do not download CarX Street at 2.3GB the night before a flight, you will be sat in the departure lounge watching a progress bar. My rule of thumb after doing this too many times: anything under 200MB downloads on hotel wifi in under two minutes, anything between 500MB and 1GB needs 10 to 15 minutes on a decent connection, and anything over 1.5GB I download the night before, always, no exceptions. Traffic Racer at 100MB has saved me more travel boredom than any of the flashier 2GB titles simply because it was already sitting on my phone when I needed it.

If racing is not quite what you are after and you want the wider offline driving category, cars, trucks and open world, I covered that separately in Free Offline Car Games Download for Android and PC: Racing Without Wifi, which includes a few titles that did not make this racing-specific list because they lean more towards driving simulation than actual racing.

What to do if none of these open on your phone

A handful of readers have written to me after this kind of list saying a game froze on install or would not launch at all. Nine times out of ten it is one of two things: either the phone is on a very old Android version and the app has moved past what it supports, or storage is full and the install silently fails partway through. Check your available storage first, most racing games above 500MB need at least double that free to unpack temporary files during install. If storage is fine and it still will not run, uninstall completely rather than just clearing the cache, then redownload, because a half finished update is the most common cause of a game that "worked yesterday."

For the wider question of what runs with no wifi and no mobile signal at all, not just racing games, I put together a broader breakdown at Internet Free Games Download: What Runs With No Wifi and No Signal, and if you are gaming across both a phone and a laptop, the no-internet picks for Android and PC together are here: No Internet Games Free Download for Android and PC (Play With Zero Data).

My honest ranking if you can only install five of these

  • Traffic Racer, for the smallest file and the most reliable offline performance I have tested on this list.
  • Hill Climb Racing 2, for the widest appeal across ages and skill levels.
  • CarX Drift Racing 2, for anyone who cares about how the car handles rather than just how fast it goes.
  • Beach Buggy Racing 2, for a fun multiplayer feel even when you are playing entirely alone offline.
  • Off The Road - OTR, for the widest sandbox and the most time you will get out of one download.

Frequently asked questions

Are these 30 games really free with no in-app purchases required to finish them?

They are free to download and free to complete the main campaign without paying, but most use ads and optional in-game currency purchases to speed up progress, and a few, especially Asphalt 8 and Real Racing 3, get noticeably harder the longer you refuse to spend anything.

Which of these racing games has the smallest file size for a phone with limited storage?

Hill Climb Racing at around 75MB and Race the Traffic: Moto at around 60MB are the two smallest offline racing games on this list, both under 100MB and both tested clean in airplane mode.

Do I need to be connected to the internet to download these games in the first place?

Yes, you always need a connection to download and install from the Play Store and to complete the first launch of the app, the offline part only applies once the game is fully installed and you have opened it at least once while connected.

Why do some racing games marked "offline" on the Play Store still fail without wifi?

Developers often label a game offline because the core gameplay works without signal, but they leave in background calls for ads, cloud saves, or licence checks that can cause a stall or crash if the app cannot reach a server at all, which is exactly why I test every game in full airplane mode rather than trusting the store listing.
