How to Create a GCash Account (and the 12-Month Rule Most People Miss)

To create a GCash account, download the GCash app, enter your registered Philippine mobile number, type the 6-digit code GCash texts you, choose New Account, fill in your details and set a 4-digit MPIN. It's free and takes a few minutes. The catch: a new account starts as Basic, and you'll need to get Fully Verified before you can send funds or transfer to a bank.

If you're opening GCash so you can get paid, whether that's from a client, a creator programme, an online job or family abroad, the sign-up is the easy bit. What trips people up is everything around it: the SIM rule, the number that's already taken, and the verification deadline that quietly closes accounts. I'll walk you through all of it, using what GCash's own Help Center says.

Which GCash account you can open

GCash isn't one account type. Its Help Center lists four, and the one you pick depends on your age and your SIM:

AccountWho it's for
GCashFilipinos in the Philippines aged 18+ with a PH SIM
GCash Jr.Filipinos or foreigners aged 7 to 17 with a PH SIM
GCash OverseasFilipinos abroad with a non-PH SIM
GTouristForeign nationals with a non-PH SIM

This guide covers the standard GCash account, the one most adults in the Philippines need.

Before you start: your SIM has to be registered

GCash says your SIM card should be registered with your telco before you sign up. You can use a SIM from any Philippine network. Under the SIM Registration Act, the registration deadline was 25 July 2023, and SIMs that weren't registered get deactivated. If your SIM was switched off, GCash says your funds are safe, but you'll need a working, registered number to create or use an account.

How to create a GCash account, step by step

  1. Download GCash from the Google Play Store or the App Store.
  2. Open the app and enter your mobile number, then tap Next.
  3. Enter the 6-digit code sent to your number and tap Submit.
  4. Select New Account, enter your details, then tap Next and Confirm.
  5. Set a 4-digit MPIN and tap Confirm.
  6. Tap Go to Login. You're in.

Pick an MPIN you'll remember but nobody could guess. Not your birthday, not 1234. You'll type it for almost everything.

The 12-month rule that closes accounts

Here's the part almost nobody reads. GCash says the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) requires you to verify your account within 12 months of creating it. If you don't, you'll only keep basic services. Worse, if your balance is zero, the account is closed. If there's still a balance, the account is suspended and a monthly maintenance fee is charged until the balance runs out.

So if you're setting up GCash to receive earnings, don't stop at sign-up. Get verified the same week.

Basic vs Fully Verified: what you can and can't do

FeatureBasicFully Verified
Cash InYesYes
Pay Bills and Buy LoadYesYes
Scan to PayYesYes
Receive from other usersYesYes
Send to other usersNoYes
Bank TransferNoYes
Pay Online and GCash CardNoYes
GSave, GInvest, BorrowNoYes

GCash puts it plainly: Basic users can receive, but they can't send. That matters if you're planning to move your earnings to a bank or pay someone.

If GCash asks for an MPIN you never set

If you're creating an account and the app jumps straight to an MPIN screen, or shows Account on hold, GCash says there's already an account on that number. Usually the previous owner of the number registered it. You can't fix that yourself: contact GCash support through the Help Center, and GCash says its team will reach out within 24 hours.

How many accounts you can have

You can create up to five accounts with different numbers under your name, and they're all linked to one customer profile. That's handy if you want one number for personal use and another for a side business, but remember each one still needs its own registered SIM.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Keep it safe from day one

  • GCash will never send you links by SMS or email, and it'll never ask for your MPIN or OTP. Anyone who does is a scammer.
  • Account Secure lets only one registered phone access your account, so set it up on the phone you'll keep.
  • Don't share your 6-digit code with anyone, even someone saying they're from GCash.

If you're opening GCash to receive pay from abroad, it's worth reading how Payoneer works with GCash in the Philippines and how PayPal works for Filipino earners before your first payout.

Common sign-up problems and quick fixes

What you seeWhat it usually meansWhat to do
No 6-digit code arrivesWeak signal or an unregistered SIMCheck your SIM is registered and active, move to better signal and request the code again
MPIN screen straight awayThe number already has a GCash accountContact GCash support so they can review the old account
Account on holdThe account on that number was suspended or closedChat with GCash support from the Help Center
App won't install or openOld app version or phone softwareUpdate the app and your phone, then try again

One more thing that saves headaches later: use your real name exactly as it appears on your government ID. When you verify, GCash matches your details against your ID, and when you receive remittances or link PayPal, the names have to match too. A nickname at sign-up turns into a rejected verification or a transfer that won't land.

What to do right after you sign up

  1. Get Fully Verified with one valid government ID, so you can send and transfer.
  2. Turn on biometrics login and set up Account Secure on the phone you'll keep.
  3. Check your limits under Profile, then Profile Limits, so a big payout doesn't bounce.
  4. Link your bank, PayPal or Payoneer if that's how you get paid.

My advice

Create the account, then verify it straight away. A Basic account is fine for paying bills, but it can't send or transfer, and the 12-month clock is real. Ten minutes with your ID now saves you a locked wallet later.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free to create a GCash account?

Yes. GCash says creating an account is free. Fees only apply to some services, like certain cash-in or cash-out routes.

Can I create a GCash account without a Philippine SIM?

Not a standard GCash account. That needs a PH SIM. Filipinos abroad with a foreign SIM can open GCash Overseas, and foreign visitors can use GTourist.

What's the minimum age for GCash?

The standard GCash account is for people aged 18 and over. Users aged 7 to 17 can open GCash Jr.

Why does GCash ask for an MPIN when I'm creating an account?

That means the number is already linked to a GCash account, usually from a previous owner. Contact GCash support so they can review it.

What happens if I never verify my GCash account?

GCash says BSP rules require verification within 12 months. Unverified accounts keep only basic services, and they're closed if the balance is zero or suspended if there's a balance left.
