An ATS resume checker reads your resume the way an applicant tracking system might, then flags missing keywords, layout problems and gaps against a job description. Several are free, some run inside resume builders, and one sends your resume to a human reviewer instead. Eleven options follow in no particular order.
You can send fifty applications and hear nothing back, not because you're the wrong person but because the software reading your resume couldn't find what it was told to look for.
A resume checker shows you that view before you hit send. The eleven tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If your resume needs building rather than checking, my round-up of free AI resume builders that beat the ATS is the place to start.

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free or open source. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Why the screening side is worth understanding
The Information Commissioner's Office has published the results of audits it ran with developers and providers of AI recruitment tools. The ICO notes these tools are used to source candidates, summarise CVs and score applicants, and it made almost 300 recommendations, including processing personal information fairly and keeping it to a minimum.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
That tells you two things. Employers do run software over applications before a person reads them, and that software is now under a regulator's eye. A checker can't promise you'll pass any one employer's system, but it can show you the obvious misses, such as a job title spelled differently or a skills section a parser can't read.
Keyword match or layout check?
Keyword matching compares your resume with one job description and lists the words and skills it can't find. It's the most useful check when you're applying for a specific role.
Layout checks look at structure: headings, dates, columns, tables and file type. They catch the problems that stop a system reading your resume at all, whatever job it's for.
Run both. A layout fix helps every application, and a keyword pass makes each one fit the job in front of you.
Six things to ask any resume checker
- Does it compare my resume with a specific job description?
- Will it tell me which section a parser can't read?
- Does it accept both PDF and Word files?
- How does it store or delete my resume afterwards?
- Is the score explained, or just a number?
- Can I re-check quickly after each edit?
Signs your resume isn't getting past the software
- No replies to strong-fit roles. Check the keywords.
- Your job title is unusual. Add the common version.
- You use columns or text boxes. Test a simpler layout.
- Skills sit only in a graphic. Write them as text.

My plain advice on ATS resume checkers
Pick one job you'd love, paste its description into two different checkers and fix only what both of them flag. Then send that version. Chasing a perfect score on one tool usually means stuffing in keywords a human reader will notice.
If you're unsure what a parser-friendly layout looks like, my explainer on what an ATS-friendly resume template is walks through it section by section.
Frequently asked questions
What is an ATS resume checker?
It's a tool that reads your resume the way an applicant tracking system might, then shows missing keywords, formatting problems and how closely you match a job description.
Are ATS resume checkers free?
Several have a free version or a free scan. Check the free plan column above, then confirm what's included on each vendor's site before you upload.
Can a checker guarantee I'll pass an ATS?
No. Every employer sets up its system differently. A checker shows likely problems, and fixing them improves your odds, but it can't see inside one company's settings.
Should I use a PDF or a Word file?
Follow the job advert first. If it doesn't say, test both formats in a checker and use the one that reads more cleanly.
Do employers use AI to screen resumes?
Many do. The ICO's audit work covered AI tools used to source candidates, summarise CVs and score applicants.
How often should I run a resume through a checker?
Run it once for layout, then again for each job you apply for, because the keyword match changes with every description.
