An eBay product research tool shows you what has sold, what buyers are watching and how a category is performing, so you can source stock with more confidence. Some use eBay's own data, some search sold and watched listings, and some add dropshipping or selling tools. Choose by what you sell and how you source it. Nine options follow, in no particular order.
The best eBay sellers don't guess. They check what has sold, how often and in what condition before they buy anything, whether that's a car boot find or a pallet of clearance stock.
The nine tools below cover eBay's own research tool, sold-listing search, collectibles valuation and dropshipping software. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you're just starting out, my guide to selling products through eBay covers the set-up.
eBay product research tools at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

The IRS form that arrives once reselling grows
The IRS says payment apps and online selling platforms must send you a Form 1099-K if your payments for goods or services pass its reporting threshold in more than 200 transactions. It adds that they may send one for lower amounts too.
So once your eBay sales grow, the IRS hears about them. Keep receipts for everything you source from day one, because they're what show the difference between what you sold and what you earned.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Five things to check on every sourcing trip
- How many of this exact item sold in the last few months.
- How many are listed right now, competing for the same buyers.
- Which condition and version sells fastest.
- Whether it's heavy or fragile to post.
- Whether you'd be happy holding it for a few months if it's slow.
Sold listings matter more than live ones
A live listing only shows what someone hopes to get. Sold listings show what buyers did. Research tools that surface sold data, sell-through and watch counts give you a far clearer picture than scrolling the live results.
For collectibles, history matters even more. An item that sold well three years ago may not sell now, so look at recent sales first.
Keep a sourcing log
Write down every buy: the item, where you found it, the sold examples you checked and what it finally sold for. After a few months the log tells you which categories and sources work for you, which no tool can do on its own.
Signs you're sourcing blind
- You only check live listings. Check sold ones.
- Stock sits for months. Look at sell-through.
- Returns keep coming. Describe condition better.
- Postage eats the profit. Weigh items first.

My plain advice on eBay research
Build a short list of categories you know well and research those deeply, instead of chasing every trend. You'll spot bargains faster, describe items better and get fewer returns. Knowledge is the edge the tools can't give you.
Before you list, check how much eBay takes from each sale so your research covers what you keep, not just what sells.
Frequently asked questions
What is an eBay product research tool?
It's software that shows sold listings, demand, watch counts or category performance on eBay so you can decide what to source.
Does eBay have its own research tool?
Yes. eBay offers a product research tool in Seller Hub that shows how products and categories are performing.
Can I research eBay sold items for free?
Some tools name a free version. Check the free plan column above and each vendor's site.
Will eBay report my sales to the IRS?
Online selling platforms must send a Form 1099-K once payments pass the IRS threshold in more than 200 transactions, and may send one for less.
What sells well on eBay?
It depends on the category and season. Sold-listing data for your own niche beats any general list.
How do I value collectibles before selling?
Look at recent sold examples in the same condition, and use a collectibles valuation tool for rarer items.
