Final Cut Pro vs Premiere Pro: Which Editor Suits Your Videos?

Final Cut Pro suits people who edit on a Mac or iPad and want Apple Intelligence features with the Magnetic Timeline. Premiere Pro, which Adobe now calls Adobe Premiere, suits people who want the editor Adobe calls the go-to for pro video, with apps on iPhone and Android too. Pick Final Cut Pro for an all-Apple setup and Premiere for working across devices.

I read Apple's Final Cut Pro page and Adobe's Premiere page for this comparison. One thing jumped out straight away: Adobe's page is now titled Adobe Premiere, not Premiere Pro, and it's on phones.

What Final Cut Pro does well

Apple says Final Cut Pro makes it easy to create polished, pro-quality videos across Mac and iPad. The Magnetic Timeline is the heart of it: you move and trim clips and try different edits without breaking the rest of your story. You can isolate people without a green screen and create captions in the app.

Apple's library of titles, transitions, soundtracks and effects is built in, and the audio tools are there so your videos sound as good as they look. It's part of Apple Creator Studio with Logic Pro and Pixelmator Pro, and Apple says the Mac version is also on the App Store on its own.

What Premiere offers

Adobe's page calls Premiere the go-to for pro video and talks about AI workflows throughout. The headline change is that it's available now on iPhone and Android, so you can start a cut on your phone. Adobe has also added Color Mode, a colour grading system made for editors inside Premiere, which is in beta.

Adobe offers a free trial and separate plans for businesses and students, and the page puts AI workflows at the centre of how it wants you to edit, from rough cut to colour.

The phone question

This is the gap I'd think about most. Apple's page talks about Mac and iPad, while Adobe's says Premiere is on iPhone and Android. If you shoot on an Android phone, or your team is split between Windows and Mac, Premiere fits that mix. If every device you own is Apple, Final Cut Pro's tight fit with Apple Intelligence is the bigger draw.

Neither page names a free plan, so you'll be testing both on a trial. Do it with a real project rather than a demo clip, because the timeline style is what you'll either love or fight with.

Think about where your footage comes from as well. If you shoot on an iPhone and edit on a Mac, Final Cut Pro keeps the whole job inside Apple's world, with titles, transitions and soundtracks from Apple's own library ready to drop in. If clips arrive from an Android phone, a Windows laptop or a client in another office, Premiere's spread across devices is the more natural fit. Neither choice is wrong; it's about which one removes the most friction from the way your videos already get made, day after day.

Who each editor suits

Final Cut Pro suits solo creators and small businesses on a Mac who want quick, polished edits. Premiere suits people who work with an Adobe-based team, edit on a Windows PC, or want to start projects on an Android phone. If you're weighing Adobe's own options, my guide on which Adobe video software suits a small business helps, and here's how the video apps for Reels and TikTok compare.

My advice on Final Cut Pro or Premiere

Look at your devices and your collaborators before you look at features. If you edit alone on a Mac, start the Final Cut Pro trial and cut one real video; the Magnetic Timeline will tell you within a day whether it suits you. If you share projects with people on Windows, or you want to edit on your phone, start with Premiere instead.
