Final Cut Pro suits Mac and iPad users who want fast editing with Apple Intelligence features and the Magnetic Timeline. DaVinci Resolve suits editors who want colour grading, effects, audio and now photo editing in one tool, with a free download. If you're all-in on Apple and want speed, start with Final Cut Pro; if colour and collaboration matter more, start with Resolve.
Both of these are serious editors, and both makers explain them well on their own sites. I read Blackmagic Design's DaVinci Resolve 21 page and Apple's Final Cut Pro page, so the details below are theirs.

Where DaVinci Resolve shines
Blackmagic describes Resolve 21 as one tool that combines editing, colour correction, visual effects, motion graphics, audio post production and now photo editing. Each job has its own page: Cut and Edit for editing, Color for grading, Fusion for effects, Fairlight for audio, and a new Photo page.
Colour is Resolve's reputation, and the page backs it up with 32-bit float processing and Blackmagic's YRGB colour science. The other standout is Blackmagic Cloud, which lets editors, colourists, VFX artists and sound engineers work on the same project at the same time, locally or remotely.
Where Final Cut Pro shines
Apple's pitch is speed and ease on Mac and iPad. The Magnetic Timeline lets you move and trim clips and try different story ideas without clips knocking each other out of place. You can isolate a subject without a green screen, create captions, and add titles, transitions, soundtracks and effects from Apple's library.
Apple says the AI features build on Apple Intelligence and sit right in your workflow. Final Cut Pro is also part of Apple Creator Studio, alongside apps like Logic Pro and Pixelmator Pro, and Apple says the Mac version is still available on its own from the App Store.
The free download nobody should skip
Here's the fact that changes the decision for a lot of creators: DaVinci Resolve has a free download, straight from Blackmagic's page, and it now includes photo editing as well as video. Final Cut Pro offers a free trial instead. So you can learn Resolve's whole workflow, from edit to grade to audio, before you decide whether you need Studio.
The trade-off is platform. Final Cut Pro is built for Apple's devices and its features lean on Apple Intelligence. If you edit on a Mac and an iPad, that tight fit is the reason to choose it.
Who each editor suits
Final Cut Pro suits YouTubers, coaches and small business owners on a Mac who want to cut quickly and look polished. DaVinci Resolve suits people who care about colour, want effects and audio in the same app, or work with a team on one project. Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
My advice on DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro
Download DaVinci Resolve's free version and the Final Cut Pro trial, then edit the same short video in both. Notice which one gets you to a finished cut faster and which one makes the colour look right. If you only edit on a Mac and want speed, you'll probably feel at home in Final Cut Pro within an hour; if you keep opening the Color page in Resolve, that's your answer. Either way, you'll have learned something about how you like to edit.
