Facebook has no set UK rate per 1,000 views: British creators earn through Meta's invite-only Content Monetization program, where pay depends on qualified views, watch time and other factors Meta decides. Meta pays once your balance reaches one hundred US dollars, usually within about thirty days of the month ending, and you'll see your own rate in the Professional Dashboard.
I get this question from UK creators and small business owners more than any other Facebook money question. It's usually followed by a second one: do I need to tell HMRC? I'll cover both, because in Britain the tax side catches people out as often as the earnings side.
Can British creators join Facebook Content Monetization?
Yes. The United Kingdom is on Meta's list of countries where Facebook Content Monetization is available. It's the one program that now pays for eligible Reels, photos, Stories and text posts, after Meta closed In-stream Ads, Ads on Reels and the Performance bonus on August 31, 2025.
Britain was in the first wave of Meta's creator payments. Meta's 2024 update on the Performance bonus listed Great Britain among the starting countries, next to the US, Canada, Australia, India and Mexico.
You still need an invitation. Meta sends them through the Facebook app, email, Meta Business Suite and the Professional Dashboard. If nothing's arrived, the interest form lets you put your hand up, though Meta says it isn't an application.
A UK figure for 1,000 views, and why it moves
Meta won't give you a number per 1,000 views for the UK because it doesn't work that way. Content Monetization rewards the performance of your eligible content, based on qualified views, watch time and other factors Meta determines, and the amount can change over time.
Meta doesn't publish a UK rate, and single-creator samples floating around online aren't a rate either. Once you're in the program, your Professional Dashboard shows what each eligible post earned: divide that by its views and multiply by 1,000 and you have your own figure for British audiences.
What lifts or drags a British creator's rate
- Who's watching. UK and US viewers generally attract stronger advertiser demand than audiences in lower-spending markets.
- How long they watch. Meta needs Reels to be at least 10 seconds, and content watched for under 5 seconds doesn't qualify.
- Whether the post is yours. Boosted posts, clips reposted from Pages you don't manage, and posts with ads turned off can be ineligible.
- Language. English is on Meta's supported list. Posts in an unsupported language may not earn.
For your personal number, open the earnings view in your Professional Dashboard, divide what you earned by your qualified views and multiply by 1,000. Track it monthly and you'll soon see which formats pay.
From Meta to your UK bank: pounds and payouts
Your money ends up in pounds sterling (GBP), the currency the Bank of England oversees. Meta's Content Monetisation Terms, however, set the payout threshold in US dollars: one hundred US dollars for anyone who lives outside the United States. If you're under that, Meta can carry your balance forward, month after month, until you clear it.
Payments go out within roughly thirty days of the calendar month ending. Many sole traders keep creator income separate from personal spending, and choosing a business bank account as a sole trader makes the bookkeeping far less painful.
Two details in Meta's terms matter to UK creators in particular. First, Meta is defined to include Meta Platforms Ireland Limited, so don't be surprised if paperwork comes from an Irish entity. Second, Meta says it'll prepare and issue VAT invoices under a self-billing arrangement. If you're VAT registered, show that to your accountant.
HMRC, the trading allowance and Facebook income
Here's the UK detail I'm asked about most. HMRC's trading allowance is a tax exemption of up to 1,000 pounds a year for individuals with trading income. If your gross trading income goes over 1,000 pounds, HMRC says you must register for Self Assessment by 5 October in the following tax year.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
The gov.uk page doesn't mention social media income by name, and everyone's situation differs, so I'd never tell you how to treat your own Facebook payouts. Please speak to a UK accountant or HMRC before you file. Meta's terms also say it may ask for tax forms and may withhold amounts it's legally required to.
Other ways UK creators earn on Facebook
| Income route | Open in the UK? | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Content Monetization | Yes, invite-only | Meta country list |
| Subscriptions | Yes, the UK is among 37 countries | Meta for Creators |
| Stars | Needs 500 followers for 30 days; check Meta's Stars country list | Meta for Creators |
| Breakthrough bonus | No, US-based applicants only | Meta for Creators |
| Brand partnerships | Yes, through Meta's brand tools or your own deals | Meta for Creators |
Subscriptions work well for UK creators with a loyal base, and Meta's threshold is 10,000 followers or 250 return viewers, plus engagement or watch-minute targets across the previous 60 days. Stars pay 1 cent for every Star a fan sends.
If you want a comparison with a market that has a similar profile, my breakdown of what Facebook pays Australian creators shows how the same program plays out elsewhere.
Five steps for British Facebook creators
- Check your Professional Dashboard for a Content Monetization invite, or submit the interest form.
- Keep Reels over 10 seconds and hook viewers early.
- Work out your own earnings per 1,000 views every month.
- Keep a simple record of payouts and any self-billed VAT invoices for your accountant.
- Turn on Subscriptions once your Page meets the thresholds.
To see which Reels earn their keep, I'd use a simple Reels tracking dashboard. It's the quickest way to stop guessing.
