To remove a phone number from Discord on desktop, open User Settings, then My Account, press Remove next to your phone number, enter your password and confirm. On mobile, tap your avatar, then the cogwheel, then Account, open the Phone field and tap Remove Phone Number.
The catch: removing it isn't instant freedom for that number. Discord allows only one number per account, and after you remove one there's a waiting period before it can be used on an account again, so an immediate re-add can fail. And if you can't remove it yourself and you've forgotten which email the account uses, Discord Support can't help you, as of October 2026.
Remove your number step by step
- Open User Settings and go to My Account.
- Press Remove next to the phone number.
- Enter your password.
- Press Remove again to confirm.
On mobile:
- Tap your avatar, then the cogwheel.
- Open Account and tap the Phone field.
- Tap Remove Phone Number.
If there's no way to remove it from your settings, contact Discord Support from the email address linked to that Discord account. Support won't tell you which email that is, and it won't remove the number if you can't write from it.
Why Discord wants a phone number at all
Discord uses phone numbers for login and for anti-abuse verification. Verifying helps prove you're not a robot and keeps spammers out. A 'Verification Required' message can appear because a server you're joining requires verified members, or because of activity Discord treats as suspicious, such as:
- Joining a lot of servers quickly
- Sending DMs to many people who aren't your friends
- Posting messages faster than a human can
- Using third party clients or modifications
Discord also uses phone contacts for opt-in features such as Find Your Friends, which you can choose not to use.
Rescuing a number stuck on an accidental account
This one catches a lot of people. You signed up once with just a phone number, forgot about it, and now your main account says the number's already in use. Here's Discord's fix:
- Open an incognito window and log in with the phone number.
- Choose Forgot your password and enter the SMS code Discord sends.
- Set a new password and log in.
- Add an email address that isn't tied to any Discord account, and verify it.
- Remove the phone number from that account.
- Add the number to the account you want it on.

Press Start Verification, enter a valid mobile number that isn't attached to any other Discord account, then type in the code Discord sends by SMS.

The invalid number error is the one people fight hardest. Internet calling numbers, temporary burner numbers and landlines won't pass, however many times you try. It has to be a mobile number that can receive the SMS.

Before you remove it: think about your login

My verdict
Removing your number takes a minute when you can still log in, so do it from My Account and plan around the waiting period if the number's moving to another account. If it's stuck on an old phone-only account, the incognito reset route gets you there without Support. And if verification keeps failing, check the number type before anything else: a VOIP or landline number will never work.
