Straight answer: open your story, tap the three dots in the bottom right corner, and tap Delete. It comes down for everyone immediately, though anyone who already viewed it, screenshotted it, or saved it before you deleted it will still have that copy. There's no way to pull those back once someone's seen them.
Delete a story from your own profile view
- Open Instagram and tap your profile picture in the top left to view your own story.
- Let the story play, or swipe to the specific story you want to remove if you've posted more than one.
- Tap the three dots (•••) in the bottom right of the screen.
- Tap Delete from the menu that pops up.
- Confirm by tapping Delete again on the pop-up warning.
That's it, the story disappears from your profile, from anyone else's story tray, and from your story ring immediately. It typically takes under a minute for it to stop showing up for people actively viewing it, though someone mid-view when you delete might see it flicker or cut out.
Delete a story someone else can still see (the viewer count trick)
If you want to check who's already seen it before you delete it, swipe up on your own story first to see the list of viewers, then go back and delete it using the steps above. Instagram doesn't let you selectively remove it from specific people's view, it's all or nothing, live for everyone or gone for everyone, so checking who's seen it is really just for your own information rather than something you can act on afterwards.

Ever asked why is my Instagram story blurry? Here are the causes. My guide to mentioning friends in Instagram stories is short and simple.
What deleting a story doesn't undo
This is the part most people don't think about until it's too late. Deleting a story removes it from Instagram's platform, but it doesn't touch:
- Screenshots anyone took while it was live, Instagram doesn't reliably notify you of screenshots on regular stories (it only does for disappearing photo/video messages in DMs, and even that notification has been inconsistent).
- Anyone who saved it to their own device using a third-party story-saving app or website.
- A copy that may exist in your own device's camera roll if you had "Save to Gallery" or "Save Original Photos" switched on before you posted it.
- Anyone who already reposted or shared it as a screen recording elsewhere.
If you're deleting a story because it contains something sensitive, personal, or something you regret posting, delete it fast, but go in expecting that anyone who saw it in the first few minutes may already have a copy. I always tell clients: the platform deletion is instant, the internet's memory is not.
Deleting a story vs archiving vs hiding it from someone
These get confused constantly, so here's the difference:
- Delete: removes the story permanently from Instagram (unless it was already saved to your archive, in which case a copy stays there, more on this below).
- Archive: stories are automatically saved to your private Archive when they expire after 24 hours, unless you've turned that setting off. You can also manually archive a story early instead of deleting it, which pulls it off your public story but keeps a private copy only you can see.
- Hide from someone: lets specific people stay unable to see your story at all going forward, without deleting the story for everyone else. Done through Settings, then Privacy, then Story, then Hide Story From, where you pick specific accounts.
If your goal is just to stop one particular person seeing future stories rather than removing what's already posted, hiding them is the better tool, delete is for content you want gone entirely.
A real example
I once posted a story with a client's unreleased campaign details visible in the background of a photo by accident, pure carelessness on my part, rushing between meetings. I caught it four minutes after posting, deleted it within seconds of noticing, and it turned out fine because it had only had 12 views at that point and nobody I asked had screenshotted it. But that was luck, not a guarantee, four minutes is a real length of time on a platform where your close friends might be actively watching stories the moment you post. Now I always do a slow, deliberate scan of a story before I tap post, not after.
Does deleting a story remove it from your Highlights?
No, and this catches people out. If you've already added a story to a Highlight on your profile, deleting the original story from your 24-hour story tray does not remove it from the Highlight, they're stored separately once added. You have to go into the specific Highlight, find that story, tap the three dots, and remove it from there too, or delete the entire Highlight if it's easier. Check your Highlights separately any time you're trying to fully remove a piece of content from your profile.
What if you deleted the story by mistake
If you tapped Delete accidentally and it wasn't archived, there's no undo button and Instagram gives you no grace period, once you confirm the delete it's gone from the platform. Your only backup is checking your phone's camera roll for the original photo or video if you have it saved locally, then reposting it as a new story, which means it starts a fresh 24-hour timer and loses any view count or comments the original had built up. There's no support ticket route that gets a deleted story restored, so treat that confirmation tap as final before you make it.
Can you delete just part of a story with multiple photos?
Yes. If you post several photos or videos to your story in one sitting, each one is a separate story item even though viewers experience it as one continuous story. Swipe to the exact photo or video you want gone, tap the three dots on that specific item, and delete only that one, the rest of your story stays live and unaffected.
Deleting a story on desktop
Instagram's desktop site is more limited than the app for stories, you can view stories on desktop but you can't post or delete a story from a browser. If you need to delete a story urgently and only have a laptop to hand, you'll need to open Instagram in mobile browsing mode or, better, borrow a phone with the app installed, or use an Android emulator if you're comfortable with one. This is one of the few Instagram actions still locked to the mobile app in 2026, and it catches people out when they're at a desk and realise they've posted something they shouldn't have.
Why speed matters more than most people think
Instagram doesn't publish exact view speed data, but from running accounts with active follower bases, a story with even a modest few hundred close followers routinely picks up its first 10 to 20 views within the first two to three minutes if you post during a time your audience is already active, lunchtime and early evening tend to be the busiest windows. That's the entire window you have before a meaningful number of people have seen something you might regret. If you've posted something wrong, don't finish scrolling your notifications first, delete it immediately and sort out the rest after.

Frequently asked questions
Does Instagram notify people when I delete a story?
No. There's no notification sent to viewers or followers when you delete a story. It simply stops appearing the next time someone opens the app or refreshes their story tray.
Can I recover a story after I've deleted it?
Only if it was saved to your Archive before deletion, or if you had it saved to your camera roll. If Archive was switched off and you didn't save a copy elsewhere, once it's deleted it's gone from Instagram for good.
Does deleting my story remove it from someone's DM if I shared it there?
No. If you or someone else shared the story into a direct message before you deleted it, that shared version stays in the DM thread as a separate copy and isn't affected by deleting the original story.
Why can I still see a story I deleted in my Archive?
Because Archive and your live story are two separate things. Deleting removes it from your public 24-hour story, but if Archive was switched on when you posted it, a private copy automatically saved there and stays unless you delete it separately from the Archive itself.
