The short version: Meta AI inside WhatsApp (where it's available), Sticker.ly, Canva's Magic Media, and Microsoft Designer via Bing Image Creator all let you generate AI stickers for free, but every single one of them still needs you to strip the background, resize to 512x512, and build a real WhatsApp Sticker Maker pack before it will install on your phone. The generating bit is the easy 20% of the job.

Why "free AI sticker maker" searches are so frustrating

Type "create WhatsApp stickers with AI free" into Google and you'll get thirty apps that all look identical, half of which want your phone number before you've even seen a preview. That's not an accident. Sticker apps are cheap to build and expensive to grow, so most of them monetise you, not the sticker.

WhatsApp doesn't have its own native AI sticker generator built into the app for most users. What people are seeing when they hear "WhatsApp added AI stickers" is Meta AI's image generation feature, rolled out inside WhatsApp in a handful of markets (the US and India got it first, most of the UK and Israel did not at full rollout). If you're in a region where it's live, you type a description in a chat, Meta AI generates an image, and you tap to send it as a sticker. If you're not, you need a third-party route, and that's where most of the confusion starts.

The technical bit nobody explains

Before you touch any tool, know what WhatsApp requires, because this is where most free sticker attempts fail:

  • Main sticker image: 512 x 512 pixels, WEBP format, transparent background
  • Tray icon (the small thumbnail that shows in your sticker menu): 96 x 96 pixels
  • A pack needs a minimum of 3 stickers and a maximum of 30
  • File size per sticker capped at 100KB
  • The pack has to be added through the WhatsApp Sticker Maker interface or a compatible third-party app that hooks into WhatsApp's sticker API, you can't just drag a PNG into a chat and have it become a reusable sticker

Miss any one of those and the pack either won't import or it'll show up blurry, squashed, or with a white box around it instead of a clean cutout. This is the step every "top 10 free AI sticker apps" listicle skips.

Where you can create them for free

Meta AI inside WhatsApp itself

If your account has it, this is the cleanest option because it's already built for the format. You open a chat, tap the Meta AI icon or type your prompt after the AI trigger, describe what you want ("a cartoon fox waving, flat illustration style, white background"), and it generates several options. Tap the one you like, choose sticker, send. No export, no cropping, no third app. The catch: availability is patchy, and quality on faces and hands is still noticeably worse than dedicated AI image tools.

Sticker.ly

Free on iOS and Android, with a text-to-sticker AI mode alongside its photo-to-sticker feature. You type a prompt, it generates a batch, you pick your favourites, add them to a pack, and publish straight into WhatsApp's sticker library through the built-in integration. The free tier is usable, though it will nudge you toward a paid subscription for higher-resolution exports and to remove watermarks on some styles.

Canva's Magic Media

Canva's free plan includes a limited number of AI image generations per month through Magic Media. Generate your image, use the free background remover (also part of Canva's core toolkit), resize the canvas to 512x512, and export as PNG. You'll then need to convert that PNG to WEBP and run it through a sticker-pack app, because Canva itself doesn't push directly into WhatsApp. Two extra steps, but the image quality is often better than the dedicated sticker apps.

Microsoft Designer / Bing Image Creator

Free with a Microsoft account, powered by DALL-E, and no daily prompt cap that most people ever hit for casual sticker-making. Good for stylised, illustration-heavy stickers. Same workflow as Canva: generate, remove background, resize, convert, then use a sticker pack app to install.

WhatsApp Sticker Maker apps that accept AI-generated source images

Apps like Sticker Maker Studio, Personal Stickers for WhatsApp, and similar free tools don't generate AI images themselves, but they're the missing link between "I made a picture with an AI tool" and "it's now a working sticker in my chat." You import your AI-generated PNG, the app auto-crops and converts to WEBP at the right dimensions, and hands the pack straight to WhatsApp's add-to-tray function.

A worked example: building a branded pack for a small business

Say you run a small online bakery and you want a set of branded stickers for the WhatsApp broadcast list you use to message regular customers about new flavours and collection slots.

Here's a realistic route through it:

  • Step 1: In Canva's free plan, use Magic Media to generate five images: a cupcake winking, a loaf of bread giving a thumbs up, a "back soon" clock icon, an "order ready" tick, and your logo mascot waving. Prompt example: "flat vector illustration, cheerful cupcake character winking, pastel colours, white background, no text"
  • Step 2: Use Canva's background remover on each image, then resize the canvas to 512x512 pixels and export as PNG
  • Step 3: Import the five PNGs into a free sticker maker app, let it auto-crop and generate the 96x96 tray icon
  • Step 4: Name the pack something searchable inside your own contacts list, like "[Bakery Name] Stickers," and add it to WhatsApp
  • Step 5: Send a test message to yourself from a second device to confirm the pack imports cleanly before you push it out to customers

Total time for five stickers, start to finish, roughly 25 to 40 minutes the first time, and closer to 10 minutes once you've done it once and know the sizing.

The bit most guides avoid saying

Free AI sticker generators are not neutral. Several of the popular ones train future models on the images you generate and the prompts you type, and their terms of service say so if you read them, which almost nobody does. If you're generating a sticker of a real person's face, whether that's a customer, a colleague, or a public figure, you're on shaky ground twice over: WhatsApp and Meta have both removed sticker packs for depicting real individuals without consent, and several jurisdictions treat AI-generated likenesses as a right-of-publicity issue, not just a copyright one. Keep your AI stickers to original characters, mascots, and illustrated styles, not recreations of real people, and you avoid the whole mess.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

There's also a quality ceiling worth being honest about. Free tiers of every tool on this list cap either the number of generations, the resolution, or the style variety. If you want a polished, consistent-looking pack of 20 stickers with a single art style throughout, you'll likely hit the free limit halfway through and either wait for a monthly reset or pay for a subscription month. That's fine for a personal pack. For a business pack you're sending to hundreds of customers, it's worth budgeting for at least one paid month of whichever tool gives you the cleanest output, because a pack that looks half-finished reflects on the brand sending it.

Making stickers get used, not just installed

A sticker pack sitting unused in someone's tray does nothing for you. If you're building these for a business, treat the launch the same way you'd treat any other small content push, the same discipline you'd apply if you were launching a real campaign rather than just dropping a link and hoping. Tell customers the pack exists, show one or two of the stickers in your next broadcast message, and give people a reason to use them (a discount code sticker that doubles as a coupon works better than a plain logo).

It's also worth thinking about where else the same visual assets earn their keep. The mascot you built for WhatsApp can double up as a reaction sticker on a business channel if you're active on Telegram as a business messaging channel, and the same flat-illustration style translates well to Snapchat, where brands that built playful, character-led content around a consistent visual identity, the kind of thing covered in this Snapchat marketing strategy breakdown, tend to outperform the ones posting straight product photos.

If you want to know whether any of this is landing, don't just count sticker sends. Watch reply rates on the broadcast message you attach them to, and if you're running the same characters across Instagram Stories or posts, apply the same discipline you'd use when you measure Instagram engagement with real numbers rather than vanity metrics. A sticker that gets forwarded to a friend is worth ten times one that just gets a thumbs up.

What to skip entirely

Avoid any "AI sticker generator" that asks for your WhatsApp phone number before showing you a single preview image, that's a data-collection funnel dressed up as a free tool. Avoid browser extensions promising "one click WhatsApp AI stickers," most of them are unmaintained and several have been flagged for bundling adware. Stick to the named apps and platforms above, all of which have real companies behind them and actual terms of service you can read, even if you never do.

One last practical point: if you're building stickers as part of a wider small business presence and you're also handing out contact details at events or meetings, make sure the digital side is joined up. A well-made sticker pack and a scrappy paper business card send opposite signals, so if you haven't sorted that yet, it's worth reading through how to choose a digital business card for networking at the same time you're building out your branded chat assets.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Meta AI to make WhatsApp stickers for free everywhere?

No. Meta AI's in-chat sticker generation is only live in certain markets, including the US and India at initial rollout, and hasn't reached every region including large parts of the UK. Check your WhatsApp settings for a Meta AI icon in chats to see if you have it before assuming it's available.

Do free AI sticker apps cost nothing?

Most cap free generations per day or month, add watermarks to some outputs, or gate higher resolution behind a subscription. You can build a small, decent pack entirely free, but a large polished pack often means hitting a limit and either waiting or paying.

Why won't my AI-generated image install as a WhatsApp sticker?

It almost always comes down to formatting. WhatsApp needs 512x512 pixel WEBP images with a transparent background and a separate 96x96 tray icon, and a plain PNG or JPEG won't import correctly without a sticker maker app converting it first.

Is it safe to make an AI sticker of a real person's face?

Generally no for anyone other than yourself with clear consent. Packs depicting real individuals without permission have been removed from WhatsApp and Meta's platforms, and several regions treat this as a right-of-publicity issue separate from copyright, so it's safer to stick to original characters and illustrated mascots.
