Claude for Google Docs is the Claude for Google Workspace extension, a sidebar that opens inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, reads the file you have open and edits it directly. As of October 2026 it's in beta for Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise plans, and one install covers all three apps.
It isn't Claude's own in-chat documents feature at claude.ai. This is Claude coming to the Google file you're already working in, so you can draft, analyse, restructure and restyle without copying text back and forth.
How the sidebar differs from Claude's Google connectors
The Google Workspace connectors let Claude search your Drive, Gmail and Calendar while you chat at claude.ai. The extension works the other way round: it reads the relevant parts of the open file plus whatever you've selected, and only that file. Apart from connectors you've turned on, it can't see your other Drive files, your email or your calendar. If you want Claude searching across your Google account from the chat window instead, Claude's connectors are the tool for that.
The sidebar has a model picker, any connectors your organization has enabled at claude.ai, attachments of up to 20 files per message, and a 'Search the web' toggle that's off by default.
Installing it yourself, through your admin, or blocked
You need a Google account that's allowed to install apps from the Google Workspace app directory. Which install route you get depends on your Google Workspace admin's settings, not on your Claude plan.
| Your situation | What happens | Who can sort it |
|---|---|---|
| Installs from the directory are allowed | You install Claude yourself from its Workspace app listing | You |
| Your admin rolls it out | A super administrator uses Admin install for everyone, or for chosen groups or organizational units | Your Workspace super administrator |
| User installs are blocked | Admin install still works, or the admin can allowlist Claude so people install it themselves | Your Workspace admin |
| You see 'This application is not allowed by your administrator' | That message comes from Google, not Anthropic | Only a Workspace admin |
Many organizations block these installs by default, so on a company account, check with IT first. Then:
- Install Claude from its Workspace app listing, or ask your admin to admin-install it.
- Reload any Docs, Sheets or Slides files that were already open.
- Open a native Google file and choose Extensions, then Claude, then Open Claude.
- The first time, allow the two Google permissions and sign in with your Claude account. SSO works.
- Pick Ask before edits or Accept all edits in the mode selector.
- Ask for an outcome, then check File, Version history to see what changed.
Ask before edits or Accept all edits
Ask before edits is the default: Claude explains what it's about to do in plain language and waits for you to click Allow. Accept all edits makes ordinary content edits without stopping, but still pauses on anything that touches links, external images, web addresses or someone's access to the file. Edits happen in place and Google records them under your name, so they show up in File, Version history like any edit you make yourself. To undo, use Undo or restore an earlier version.
Whichever mode you choose, Claude stops and asks before it inserts an image from a web address, adds a link or removes anyone's access. These carry a 'Security review' label and have no 'always allow' option. Some things it can't do at all: share the file, give anyone access, change who owns it, create menus or scheduled automations, or load arbitrary web pages into your file.
What it does well in each app, and where it stops
| App | Examples Anthropic gives | What it can't do |
|---|---|---|
| Docs | Cut a 14-page brief to 6 pages without losing numbered requirements; turn notes into a table with owner, action and due date; check a contract for defined terms that are used but never defined | Read, reply to or resolve comments; accept or reject existing suggestions; create, rename or reorder document tabs, though it can read and edit every tab. Its own edits land as direct edits, not suggestions. |
| Sheets | Walk through how a total is calculated and flag anything hardcoded; normalise dates in three formats; find why a VLOOKUP returns #N/A | Read or edit Connected Sheets tabs backed by BigQuery; create triggers, custom menus or scheduled refreshes |
| Slides | Draft a five-slide update from speaker notes; split a wall-of-text slide in two; restyle a deck from the title slide's fonts and colours | Make linked charts: the charts it creates go in as images, so they don't update when the numbers change |
Two of those have easy workarounds. Paste a comment into the chat if you want Claude to act on it, and extract BigQuery-backed rows to a regular tab first.
Limits that apply in every app
- It works only in native Google Docs, Sheets and Slides files. Word, Excel or PowerPoint files opened in Google need converting first with File, Save as Google Docs, Sheets or Slides.
- It works on the open file only. It can't open, create or copy other Drive files, or export a PDF.
- Keep the sidebar open while it works.
- A single long operation can run for up to six minutes before Google stops it, so for big jobs ask for stages, such as one tab or ten slides at a time.
- Firefox isn't supported in the beta, and voice dictation isn't available.
- Chat history is saved per file in your browser, doesn't sync across devices, and a copy of the file starts fresh.
Data handling and the enterprise gaps
Claude asks for two Google permissions, the minimum to show a sidebar and edit the one file it's opened in. It doesn't ask for access to Drive, Gmail, Calendar, contacts or the ability to make network requests from your file.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Content from the open file, your messages and attachments are sent to Claude to generate a response. Anthropic doesn't use that content to train its models, and inputs and outputs are deleted from its systems within 30 days, except as described in its retention article. The extension doesn't inherit your organization's custom data retention settings, which Enterprise admins should read twice.
| Enterprise control | In the beta, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Compliance API | Supported |
| Customer-managed encryption keys | Supported |
| OpenTelemetry audit export | Supported |
| Zero Data Retention | Not supported |
| HIPAA-ready organizations | Not supported, so don't use it with protected health information |
| Third-party inference through Amazon Bedrock, Vertex AI, Azure AI Foundry or a gateway | Not supported |
| API keys or cloud-provider sign-in | Not supported: people sign in with their Claude account, including SSO |
Hidden instructions in shared files
Files can contain instructions written by someone else, sometimes hidden in white text or tiny fonts. Anthropic says Claude treats document content as data, labels hidden text it finds and is designed not to follow a document's instruction to share the file or fetch a link. You should still review proposed actions, especially in files from outside your organization.
When Claude won't show up or every action fails
- Claude missing from Extensions: reload the file and check you're signed in to the Google account it was installed for. Pressing Alt+/ and typing Claude finds the menu item.
- Every action fails: you may be signed in to more than one Google account in that browser, so use a separate browser profile.
Should you switch it on?
I'd turn on Ask before edits and keep it there until you trust how Claude works in your files, because its edits are direct, under your name, with no suggestion mode to catch them. I'd test it on a copy of an important document first. And if your organization handles protected health information or relies on zero data retention, I'd wait, because the beta covers neither. For everyone else, it saves a lot of copying and pasting. If you mostly want Claude to create things inside the chat, Claude artifacts are the closer fit.
If your team works in Google Workspace and wants Claude set up with sensible defaults and a clear view of what it should and shouldn't touch, that's the kind of thing I help with. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement, AI automation and GEO, which is about getting your business seen and cited in AI answers. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams, telecom companies and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
Frequently asked questions
Which Claude plans include Claude for Google Docs?
As of October 2026 it's in beta for Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise plans.
Can Claude for Google Docs see my other Drive files?
No. It reads the open file and whatever you've selected. Apart from connectors you've turned on, it can't see your other Drive files, your email or your calendar.
Does Claude make suggestions or direct edits in Google Docs?
Direct edits. They land in place under your name and show in File, Version history, so you undo them with Undo or by restoring an earlier version.
Why does it say the application isn't allowed by my administrator?
That message comes from Google. Only a Workspace admin can clear it, by allowlisting Claude or admin-installing it.
