Claude Docs: How to Write, Share and Export a Living Document With Claude

Claude Docs is Claude's own living-document feature: you ask for a doc in any conversation, and Claude drafts it in front of you, asks clarifying questions up front and leaves comments explaining its choices. As of October 2026 it's on by default on the Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans.

It isn't Google Docs, though you can export to it. A doc is a rich-text document saved to your Claude account, with headings, tables and other formatting, and it can have more than one tab, like sections of a notebook. Every doc lives in the Artifacts tab, and if you're not sure how that tab works, my explainer on what Claude artifacts are covers it. Claude also starts from what it already knows, your files, memory, projects, skills and connected apps, so you're not facing a blank page.

Which plans get Claude Docs, and who you can share with

Anthropic's release notes from 16 September 2026 say you can ask for a design, deck or document in any conversation, including in Claude Code and the Artifacts tab, and that Claude Design, Claude Slides and Claude Docs are on every plan, Free included. On Enterprise they started in beta and stayed off until an owner turned them on. For the visual side, my guide on how to use Claude Design walks through it.

Starting a doc: three routes in

You can start a doc from a conversation, for example by asking Claude to turn the plan you've just worked through into a product spec you can share with the team. You can begin a request with /docs, or choose Docs from the Output menu in the message box. Or you can open the Artifacts tab, pick a Docs template from the gallery and describe what you need.

It works on Claude web and desktop, in the iOS and Android apps, where you can view full screen and edit, and in Claude Code. On desktop, Claude Code opens the doc in a side panel; in the terminal, Claude gives you a link to the web.

The quality of the first draft depends on the brief. Anthropic's advice is to say what the doc is for, who'll read it and what it should cover. Its own example is that a two-page launch brief for a sales team covering pricing, timing and the top three customer questions beats a request for a launch brief. If the content lives somewhere specific, name the file or connected app.

Editing with Claude and your colleagues

Nothing's locked while Claude works. You can edit directly, and changes save automatically. You can ask Claude in the conversation for the next pass, something like tightening the intro and adding a risks section. Or you can select text, leave a comment and mention @Claude, and it'll reply in the thread, make the change and explain why.

People with edit access can work in the same doc at the same time as you and Claude, and everyone's edits appear in real time. The person who creates a doc is its owner. Claude only works on a doc when a signed-in person asks it to, it can't do anything that person lacks permission to do, and every change is attributed to whoever made it, a person or Claude. That's why Claude can't edit a doc for someone who only has view access.

Ask for a chart, diagram, graph or timeline and Claude pulls data from connected apps and builds it in the doc. Here's the catch: charts and diagrams don't update on their own, even when the data comes from Salesforce or Google Sheets. You have to ask Claude to pull the latest numbers.

Sharing, access levels and export formats

Docs start private, and you share them with the Share button. There are two access levels. Viewers can read; editors can read, edit, comment and export. There's no comment-only level yet, and only the owner can rename or delete a doc. Opening a shared doc needs a Claude account, and docs can't be shared by email invitation on any plan.

On Team and Enterprise you can invite specific people or groups, or share with everyone in the organisation, but nobody outside it. Export covers Word, PDF, Markdown and Google Docs, and you can ask Claude to turn a doc into a presentation with Claude Slides.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Be careful with the delete button. Deleting a doc is permanent: there's no trash, and it disappears for everyone you shared it with. If a doc matters, I'd export a copy before anyone tidies up.

Shortcuts that save time in a doc

  • Cmd+/ on a Mac, or Ctrl+/ on Windows, opens the Claude Docs shortcut list from anywhere in a doc. Pressing ? does the same when you're not typing in a text box.
  • On German, Italian and Nordic keyboard layouts, where / needs Shift+7, that key combination is the numbered-list shortcut, so press Escape and then ? instead.
  • Standard shortcuts work, such as Cmd+B or Ctrl+B for bold. Cmd+F6 or Ctrl+F6 moves focus to the formatting toolbar.
  • Cmd+Option+M, or Ctrl+Alt+M, adds a comment. The comment box has a Send to Claude checkbox that starts ticked, so untick it for a note meant only for colleagues.

Admin settings and known limits

Owners and Primary Owners on Team and Enterprise switch Claude Docs on or off in Organization settings, then Artifacts, and on Enterprise they can limit it to specific groups with custom roles. Claude Docs counts toward your plan's usage limits, and bigger requests, such as a long doc built from several sources, use more of that limit than a typical message. These are the limits Anthropic lists as of October 2026:

  • No comment-only access.
  • Charts and diagrams don't refresh themselves.
  • No sharing outside the organisation on Team and Enterprise.
  • Edits and comments inside a doc aren't recorded in the Compliance API yet.
  • Sharing settings can't be changed in the iOS and Android apps.
  • VoiceOver doesn't read text as you type in Chrome 150 to 152 or in Claude Desktop, so use Chrome 153 or later, or Safari.

Your first Claude doc, step by step

  1. Ask for a doc in any conversation, start with /docs, or pick a Docs template in the Artifacts tab.
  2. Answer Claude's opening questions, then read the draft and its comments.
  3. Edit directly, ask Claude for the next pass, or mention @Claude in a comment.
  4. Click Share and choose view or edit access.
  5. Click Export for Word, PDF, Markdown or Google Docs.

My verdict on Claude Docs

For internal documents a team writes together, like briefs, specs and plans, I'd use it, because Claude drafting from your own files and comments saves the blank-page hour. I wouldn't use it for anything a client or supplier needs to open if you're on Team or Enterprise, since it can't leave the organisation; export it instead. And if your compliance team relies on the Compliance API, tell them doc activity isn't in there yet.

If you want your team writing with Claude in a way that's consistent and safe from day one, that's the kind of thing I help with. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement, AI automation and GEO, which is about getting your business seen and cited in AI answers. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams, telecom companies and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Docs the same as Google Docs?

No. Claude Docs is Claude's own document feature, saved to your Claude account in the Artifacts tab, though you can export a doc to Google Docs as well as Word, PDF and Markdown.

Can I share a Claude doc with someone outside my company?

On Free, Pro and Max you can share with anyone who has the link. On Team and Enterprise you can only share inside the organisation, and opening any shared doc needs a Claude account.

Can I recover a deleted Claude doc?

No. Deleting a doc is permanent, there's no trash, and it becomes unavailable to everyone you shared it with.

Do charts in Claude Docs update automatically?

No. Charts and diagrams don't update on their own, even when the data comes from Salesforce or Google Sheets, so ask Claude to pull the latest data.
