Claude for Excel is an Anthropic add-in that brings Claude inside Excel, on the Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. It explains workbooks with clickable cell-level citations, changes assumptions while keeping formulas intact, finds and fixes errors, and builds or fills in models. Install Claude for Microsoft 365 from Microsoft AppSource, sign in, and only use it on spreadsheets you trust.
Spreadsheets are where a lot of small businesses quietly run: the job tracker, the stock list, the forecast someone built years ago that nobody else fully understands. So when Anthropic put Claude inside Excel itself, rather than asking you to upload a copy of your file to a chat window, it caught my eye.
Here's what Claude for Excel does according to Anthropic's own help pages, how to install it, the prompts I'd start with, and the limits you need to know before you let it near a sheet that matters.
What is Claude for Excel?
Claude for Excel is an add-in that brings Claude into Excel. You can ask questions about the workbook you have open, change assumptions while keeping the formulas connected, find and fix errors, and build new models or fill in existing templates, all without leaving Excel. Anthropic says it's generally available on the Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans.
The detail I like most is that its answers include cell-level citations. When Claude explains where a number comes from, you can click through to the cell it's talking about, rather than taking its word for it.
What can Claude for Excel do?
Anthropic lists these as the main things it does:
- Explain a workbook: trace assumptions, explain formulas and walk through how a number was worked out.
- Update values safely: change a cell while keeping formula relationships intact, so the cells that depend on it recalculate correctly.
- Build and fill templates: populate an existing template or create a new model from a plain-English description.
- Debug errors: find the root cause of calculation errors and suggest fixes.
- Everyday Excel jobs: sort, filter, edit pivot tables, apply conditional formatting and create drop-down lists with data validation.
- Work across tabs: handle multi-tab workbooks rather than one sheet at a time.
It also shares context with Claude for PowerPoint, Word and Outlook, so a single conversation can span your workbook, a presentation, a document and your inbox.
How do you install Claude for Excel?
If you're setting it up for yourself:
- Go to the Claude for Microsoft 365 listing on Microsoft AppSource.
- Select Get it now to install it.
- Open Excel, activate the add-in and sign in with your Claude account.
If you run IT for your team, an admin can deploy it to everyone, or to specific groups, through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center under Integrated apps. After that, people open it from the Add-ins menu, sign in and start working.
Which versions of Excel does it work with?
Anthropic lists Excel on the web, Excel on Windows with a Microsoft 365 subscription and Excel on Mac, on recent builds. It doesn't run on the older one-off versions of Excel 2016 and 2019, on Excel for iPad or on Excel for Android. If the add-in won't appear, check your version first.
Claude for Excel prompts for small businesses
Anthropic's own examples lean towards finance teams. Here's how I'd translate them for a small business. Start with understanding, before you ask it to change anything.
Copy this prompt
Explain this workbook to me as if I'd never seen it.
For each tab, tell me what it's for, where its numbers come from and which cells someone would normally change.
Point out any formulas that look fragile or inconsistent, with the cell references.
Then use it to tidy and check:
Copy and paste this prompt
On the [tab name] tab, find any errors or formulas that don't match the rest of the column.
Explain each one and suggest a fix, but don't change anything until I say yes.
Then add a drop-down list in column [letter] with these options: [list them].
And to build something new from scratch:
Copy this prompt for a new sheet
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Build a simple stock tracker on a new tab.
Columns: [product name, supplier, quantity in stock, reorder level, date last ordered].
Highlight any row where stock falls below the reorder level, and add a summary at the top showing how many products need reordering.
Label every input cell clearly so anyone on the team can update it.
How do you give Claude for Excel standing instructions?
Open Settings in the add-in sidebar and use the Instructions field. Anything you put there applies to every conversation in Excel, which is ideal for house style: how you format numbers, whether column headers should be bold, your preferred date format or the context of your business. Those instructions only apply in Excel, not in Word or PowerPoint.
Copy this prompt into the Instructions field
Always format numbers with thousand separators and two decimal places.
Always bold column headers and freeze the top row.
Use [day/month/year] dates.
Before changing more than one cell, list what you'll change and wait for my yes.
What are the limits of Claude for Excel?
This is the section I'd read twice. Anthropic says Claude for Excel isn't recommended for:
- Final client deliverables without someone reviewing them.
- Calculations that need to pass an audit, without checking them.
- Workbooks with highly sensitive or regulated data, without the right controls in place.
It doesn't support data tables, and it doesn't run macros or VBA. Anthropic also warns about something called prompt injection: a spreadsheet from outside your business, such as a downloaded template or a supplier's file, can contain hidden instructions designed to trick Claude into doing something you didn't ask for. Only use it with spreadsheets you trust, and read every confirmation it asks you for before saying yes.
On the plus side, it warns you before overwriting existing data, and asks you to confirm risky actions.
Where does Claude for Excel keep your data?
Anthropic says your chat history in the add-in is stored locally in your browser, isn't synced across devices and can be cleared from Settings. Inputs and outputs are deleted on Anthropic's side within 30 days, with some exceptions set out in its data retention policy.
Best practices before you start
- Work on a copy of any workbook that matters the first few times.
- Be specific about what you want changed and where.
- Review every change before you save and share the file.
- Check the totals yourself on anything that goes to a client or your accountant.

Tools that work alongside it
Claude for Excel sits inside Microsoft 365, so it pairs naturally with Claude for Word, PowerPoint and Outlook. Anthropic also lists connectors for pulling outside data into a workbook, such as S&P Global, LSEG and Daloopa, which are aimed at finance teams. And if you'd like Claude to produce a whole spreadsheet for you from a brief, Cowork can create Excel files with working formulas that you can then refine with the add-in.
