An OpenAI ChatGPT gift card only works in the US: you have to be in the United States, on an account billed in US dollars, and you redeem it on the web at chatgpt.com/redeem. The balance pays for ChatGPT subscriptions, upgrades, renewals and credit purchases made on ChatGPT web, not for anything billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play.
That's two big conditions before you've even bought one, and there are a few more hiding in OpenAI's Help Center. Here's how it works, as of October 2026, and what to check so the card ends up somewhere useful.
Where you can buy one
An OpenAI ChatGPT gift card is a US dollar, non-reloadable stored-value card sold through participating authorised retailers. Right now they're sold digitally at select retailers in the United States. OpenAI names Best Buy as one, and says that isn't a complete list. Denominations, timing and whether a retailer offers digital or physical cards can vary.
As of October 2026, and unless the card says otherwise at purchase, amounts run from $15 to $250. Read the terms on the card before you pay.
Don't buy one for someone who can't meet the location and billing rules. OpenAI is clear that sending a digital or physical card to another country doesn't make it eligible there, and someone travelling outside the US may need to come home before they can redeem it.
How to redeem it
- Go to chatgpt.com/redeem on the web.
- Sign in to the ChatGPT account you want to fund, and check you're in the right account and workspace. If you don't have an account yet, sign up first.
- Enter the gift card PIN.
- Confirm the redemption.
- Open Settings, then Billing, to see your balance. A Business workspace owner finds it in Workspace settings, then Billing.
The whole card goes in at once; you can't redeem part of it. The balance sits in your OpenAI wallet, where you can see transactions and add more cards. A successful redemption shows as a Gift card entry in your transaction history, and if the balance is slow to load, refresh before assuming it failed. Treat the PIN like a password: once it's redeemed, OpenAI can't put the funds back on the card.
What the balance can pay for
Redeeming doesn't start a subscription or change your plan. It just adds funds. You then choose an eligible plan, upgrade or credit purchase on ChatGPT web, and the balance is applied automatically and first. You can't choose how much of it to use on a purchase.
| Can I use it for... | Answer |
|---|---|
| A new subscription bought on ChatGPT web | Yes, on Free, Go, Plus and Pro accounts, with the balance applied first |
| Upgrades and renewals on the web | Yes, but keep enough balance or another payment method, or the plan may not renew |
| One-time ChatGPT Work or Codex credit purchases | Yes, though adding gift card funds doesn't itself buy usage credits |
| A subscription billed by Apple or Google | No |
| A purchase billed in another currency | No, even with balance left |
| Splitting the card between two accounts | No, the full value goes to one account |
| Cash, a withdrawal or a refund to a card | No |
If the balance doesn't cover the whole bill, the rest goes to your other payment method. OpenAI's own example, as of October 2026: a $30 total with $10 of gift card balance applied leaves $20 to be paid by your card. Trials and promotions can still ask for a payment method even when your balance covers the total. For how usage credits themselves work, see my guide to ChatGPT credits.
The catches before you buy
- It's US only. You must be in the United States and use an account billed in US dollars.
- Apple and Google billing don't count. If your current plan is billed through the App Store or Google Play, the balance can't pay it. You'd cancel there, wait until that subscription ends, then start an eligible web subscription on the same ChatGPT account. Redeeming a card doesn't cancel the old subscription for you.
- No moving it later. Once redeemed, the value can't move to another account, so the account check before you type the PIN matters.
- No refunds back to the card. If a gift-card-funded purchase is refunded, the gift card part goes back to your wallet balance, not to the card or to cash.
- Some complimentary subscriptions may be ineligible, even when the plan name looks supported.
- The good news: the card doesn't expire.
One more mix-up to avoid. OpenAI gift cards are separate from Gifting Credits, promotional codes, free-trial invitations and API prepaid billing, and each has its own rules. Gifting Credits, which is still rolling out, sends credits through a one-time claim link; the recipient has 30 days to redeem it, and redeemed credits expire after 12 months. That isn't a gift card, and it isn't stored value.
Business workspaces
Only workspace owners can redeem a card into a Business workspace balance. Admins and members can't. The workspace has to exist first, and personal account funds don't pay for the initial subscription that creates a new Business workspace or move into its balance. If you're a member rather than the owner, switch to your Personal workspace to redeem for yourself.
If redemption fails
OpenAI lists the usual culprits as a mistyped PIN, an invalid, inactive or suspended card, a card that's already been redeemed, the wrong account or an ineligible workspace, being outside the US or on a non-dollar account, hitting a balance limit, or a temporary glitch. A redemption can also fail if it would take you over an account-balance or daily loading limit, and spending funds doesn't reset what you can load that day. For a temporary error, wait and try later.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Who to contact depends on the problem. The retailer handles buying, delivery, activation and refunds of unused cards. OpenAI Support helps with redeeming and spending the balance. Give them the account email, the 19 or 20 digit serial number, which isn't the same as the PIN, the exact error, and when it happened with your time zone. Hide the PIN in any screenshot, and never post a full PIN in a public forum. For invoices and failed card payments in general, my ChatGPT billing guide covers the rest.
Is it worth buying?
I'd buy one only for a US account you already know is the right one, and I'd sign in and check which account is active before typing the PIN. Skip it if you or the person you're gifting pays for ChatGPT through Apple or Google, or lives outside the US; the card simply won't do what you want there.
If you're sorting out which AI subscriptions your business should pay for and who should hold them, that's the kind of AI enablement I help with. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a ChatGPT gift card outside the US?
No. As of October 2026 you must be in the United States and use an account billed in US dollars to redeem one, and sending a card to another country doesn't make it eligible there.

On the web at chatgpt.com/redeem. Sign in to the account you want to fund, enter the PIN and confirm, then check Settings, Billing for the balance.
Does redeeming a ChatGPT gift card start a subscription?
No. Redeeming adds funds to your wallet balance. You then choose an eligible plan on ChatGPT web, and the balance is applied first.
Can I pay for an iPhone ChatGPT subscription with a gift card?

Do ChatGPT gift cards expire?
No. OpenAI says the gift card doesn't expire, but once redeemed the balance can't be refunded, moved to another account or exchanged for cash.
