Canva MCP lets you work with Canva from inside an AI assistant: you connect Canva to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Microsoft Copilot through Canva's AI Connector, then ask in the chat to generate designs, find existing work, resize, export and more. As of October 2026 the connector is available on every Canva account, including Canva Free and Canva Education, but some actions need a paid plan and team admins can turn it off.
The catch: what works depends on your assistant and your admin
Two things decide what you can do, and neither is obvious from the chat. First, available actions vary between AI assistants. Canva's advice is to ask Canva in your assistant what it can and can't do, and to open the design in Canva for anything that isn't available.
Second, your team settings can block things silently. Generate design uses Magic Design, so if your team's admin has turned Magic Design off, the assistant can't generate designs for anyone in the team. And if an admin switches off the AI Connector itself, nobody on the team can connect an assistant and existing connections stop working (source: Canva Help Center).
What you can ask your AI assistant to do in Canva
These are the main actions Canva lists, each with one of its own example prompts.
| Action | What it does | Example prompt |
|---|---|---|
| Generate design | Creates new visuals with AI from your prompt | Make a cheerful birthday card featuring colourful balloons and confetti |
| Create a design | Makes a new editable design for a format or purpose | Make a LinkedIn graphic that shares three tips for planning a successful event |
| Search Designs | Finds designs by ID, title or content | Find all presentations that mention Q2 marketing strategy |
| Get a Design | Pulls the full text and images from a design | Extract all text content from my Product Launch Plan document |
| Resize a design | Resizes to preset or custom dimensions | Resize my presentation to 16:9 widescreen format |
| Get presenter notes | Shows the notes in a presentation | Summarize the presenter notes in my product launch presentation |
| Import a design from URL | Turns PDFs, PowerPoints and other files into Canva designs | Create a Canva design from this external PDF presentation |
| Export a design | Exports as PDF, PNG, MP4 and other formats | Download this infographic as a high-resolution PNG |
| Merge designs | Combines several designs into one new design | Combine these two training presentations into a single document |
| Copy design | Copies a design so the original stays unchanged | Copy this presentation before I update it for next quarter |
| Folders | Creates folders, moves items and lists what's inside | Show all designs in the Q4 Campaigns folder |
| View and reply to comments | Filters comments to find specific or unresolved feedback | Show all unresolved feedback on the product launch deck |
Canva's tips for better results are short and worth following: be specific with dimensions, colours, text and design names; refer to existing brand assets; start simple and refine with follow-up prompts; and use folders and clear naming so the assistant finds designs faster.
Plan rules: who gets which actions
| Feature | Who can use it |
|---|---|
| Canva AI Connector | All Canva accounts, including Canva Free and Canva Education |
| Search Brand Templates | Paid plans: Canva Pro, Teams, Business, Nonprofit, Enterprise or Education |
| See a Brand Template's data set | Paid Canva plans |
| Autofill a Brand Template | Canva Enterprise, according to the actions page |
Here's something worth knowing before you build a workflow on autofill: Canva's pages don't agree. The actions page and the ChatGPT guide say autofill needs Canva Enterprise, while the connector setup page says autofill is available on all plans except Pro Lite and Canva Free, and that usage limits will be introduced in the future. If you're not on Enterprise, test it on your own account first. You'll also only see Brand Templates that a team admin or Brand Designer has shared with you.
AI-powered actions like generating designs may use your monthly Canva AI allowance, and your assistant has its own message or token limits on top of that.
How to connect Canva to ChatGPT or Claude
ChatGPT: open ChatGPT, select Settings, then @ Plugins, and follow the prompts to connect your Canva account. If you're on ChatGPT Business or Enterprise, your workspace admin needs to enable Apps & Connectors first. To check it worked, open @ Plugins and confirm Canva shows as connected.
Claude:
- Open Claude and go to Settings.
- Select Connectors.
- Find Canva in the list and select it.
- Follow the prompts to connect your Canva account.
- Start a new chat, select the settings icon, and toggle Canva on in the Connectors section.
You can connect the same Canva account to more than one assistant. If switching between them causes problems, check you're signed in to the right Canva account and that Canva is enabled in each assistant's connected apps settings.
Admin controls: the two switches that matter
If you run a Canva team, there are two separate settings. The first controls design generation:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- On the homepage, select your account profile to open the menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Click Permissions in the side menu.
- Open the Magic and AI tab.
- Under Who can use Magic Design?, choose Everyone, Admins and brand designers, Admins only, or no one.
The second is the AI Connector itself. It counts as a third-party integration, and admins turn it on or off in the Admin Dashboard under Controls and Permissions, then Third-party integrations. It uses the same permissions as the Canva Connect API, and when it's on, a connected assistant can read design details and folders, and create and edit designs. Canva's advice is to review your data rules first and limit access to approved people if needed.
Tool permissions in Claude
In Claude you can decide which Canva tools the assistant can reach and how often it asks. Go to your profile settings, click Integrations, find the Canva MCP integration and select Tools and settings. From there you can disable specific tools, toggle Disable all tools, or allow tools without repeated prompts. Those permissions persist across sessions until you change them.
If you see fewer design tools than you expected, that's by design. Canva grouped its 9 design tools in Claude into two: read_design and edit_design. The same capabilities are still there, along with new ones such as reading geometry and element types, and inserting text and pages.
Fixing a Canva MCP connection
- Tools aren't appearing: restart your client, and check you're in the right mode, since some tools only appear in Agent mode in Claude, Cursor and VS Code.
- Errors when prompting: check your JSON configuration is valid.
- Access Restricted by Team Admin in ChatGPT: ask your admin to allow the Canva AI Connector under Controls and Permissions.
- Connected in Claude but missing from a chat: start a new chat and toggle Canva on in that chat's connector settings.
- A Canva link from ChatGPT won't open: ChatGPT sometimes generates links that look like Canva links but aren't real designs, so open the design from the preview or from your Canva projects.
- Still stuck: disconnect and re-authorise Canva, then reconnect.
One more ChatGPT quirk: only the designs you select in ChatGPT are saved to your Canva account, so choose Save or Open in Canva on the ones you want to keep. If you'd rather extend Canva from the inside, Canva's apps are a different route, and Generate design runs on the same engine as Canva Magic Design.
My verdict on Canva MCP
I'd use it for the admin chores that eat your day: finding old designs, pulling the text out of a deck, merging files, resizing and exporting. That's where talking to an assistant beats clicking around. For design quality, I'd still open the result in Canva and finish it there. If you're on a team, check both switches with your admin before you decide it doesn't work, because a switched-off setting looks exactly like a broken connector.
Frequently asked questions
Is Canva's AI Connector the same as the Developer MCP Server?
No. Canva says the AI Connector is designed for connecting supported AI assistants to Canva for everyday use.
Which AI assistants can connect to Canva?
Canva lists ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot as supported AI assistants, and each one has its own setup guide.
Why do I see an upgrade message when I use Brand Templates?
You might be on Canva Free. Searching Brand Templates needs a paid Canva plan, and you'll only see templates that have been shared with you.
Do Canva MCP actions use my Canva AI credits?
Some AI-powered actions do. If you hit a limit or cooldown, those actions may pause until your allowance refreshes.
