ChatGPT for PowerPoint is an OpenAI add-in that runs in a sidebar inside Microsoft PowerPoint and can draft, edit, explain and polish presentations while keeping the slides editable. To get it, open PowerPoint, go to Home, then Add-ins, search for ChatGPT, add it and sign in. OpenAI says it's available globally on every ChatGPT plan from Free to Enterprise, with limited usage on Free and Go.
Plenty of AI tools will spit out a deck. The difference here is that ChatGPT works inside PowerPoint on the file you already have, so you can add one slide to a board pack without starting again or wrecking your layout.
Here's how to set it up, what it's good at, and the limits OpenAI is upfront about, all taken from OpenAI's help article.
What you can ask it to do
- Build a first draft from notes, documents, spreadsheets or other source material
- Add or revise slides in an existing deck
- Tighten a deck for an executive, customer or internal audience
- Turn long-form content into a clearer presentation structure
- Review a deck's story, gaps and likely audience questions
- Apply repeatable formats through skills, templates and connected apps, where your plan allows
Adding ChatGPT to PowerPoint
- Open Microsoft PowerPoint.
- Go to Home, then Add-ins.
- Search for ChatGPT.
- Add it, then open ChatGPT from the ribbon.
- Sign in with the ChatGPT account that has access.
If your organisation can't use the Microsoft store for add-ins, a Microsoft 365 admin can deploy it from OpenAI's manifest file under Integrated apps, then Deploy Add-in, then Upload custom apps. Workspaces with role-based access control may also need an admin to enable it.
Briefing it like a designer, not a search box
OpenAI's advice boils down to two habits: be specific about what changes, what stays and where, and ask for a plan before larger edits. In practice that sounds like this:
Add one slide safely
Before editing, tell me which slides you'd change and why.
Then add a risks slide after the market overview.
Match this deck's style and don't change the slides around it.
From a document to a deck
Turn the attached proposal into six slides for a busy business owner.
One idea per slide, a short headline that states the point, and no more than three bullets each.
Put the recommendation on slide two, not at the end.
Get a second opinion
What's the story of this deck in three sentences?
Which slide is weakest, and what question would a sceptical client ask after slide four?
A quick first test
Before you use it on a deck that matters, try it on an old one. It's the easiest way to see how it treats your template:
- Duplicate a finished presentation you know well.
- Ask it to summarise the story of the deck, and check it understood the point.
- Ask for one new slide in the middle, matching the existing style.
- Compare that slide with its neighbours: fonts, colours, spacing and image placement.
- Ask it to tighten three slides for a busier audience and judge whether you'd keep the edits.
If the new slide looks right first time, you can trust it with bigger edits. If it drifts from your style, keep it to writing and structure, and do the design touches yourself.
Where it falls short
OpenAI lists three limits, and they're worth taking seriously before a client meeting:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
| Limit | What to do about it |
|---|---|
| Template adherence | Generated or edited slides may not match your house style perfectly, so check fonts, colours and spacing |
| Advanced edits | Some chart, shape, formatting and slide management features may be limited or still in development |
| Accuracy | Claims, numbers and citations can be wrong or incomplete, so review them before sharing |
It can also make mistakes when editing or deleting content. OpenAI's recommendation, which I'd follow every time, is to duplicate the file first so you can revert.
Who should switch it on
At the workspace level, admins enable ChatGPT for PowerPoint in workspace settings and control which apps it can reach in the admin portal. If you're the owner of a small team, switch it on for the people who build client decks first, agree one house-style prompt they all use, and widen access once the output looks consistent.
Using skills and apps inside PowerPoint
Where your plan supports it, the add-in can use plugins, skills and connected apps. Click the plus button to reach skills and apps, then select a skill or type @ to call it in your prompt. If an app you expect isn't there, your workspace admin probably hasn't enabled it.
This is where repeatable formats get easier: a skill that knows your pitch deck structure means every new deck starts in the right shape.
PowerPoint add-in or ChatGPT Work?
You might wonder why you'd use the add-in when ChatGPT Work can create presentations too. OpenAI says PowerPoint isn't included in the Work desktop flow at launch, while Work does support Google Slides when the Google Workspace app is enabled. So for decks that live in PowerPoint, the add-in is the route. If your team presents from Google, my Google Slides tutorial covers the basics.
My take
It's at its best on the slow jobs: restructuring a long deck, writing a summary slide, or stress-testing the story before you present. Let it draft, then you make the calls on design and tone. For ideas on wording slides, my guide to ChatGPT Canvas shows another way to iterate on text with ChatGPT, and if you'd like help building AI into how your team makes presentations, that's what I do in my one-to-one AI sessions.
