ChatGPT Canvas: What Happened to It and What Replaced It

ChatGPT canvas, the side-by-side editor for writing and code, has been removed from OpenAI's current default models and replaced by writing blocks and code blocks inside ChatGPT's replies. Some subscribers can still use canvas through older legacy models until they're retired. To get the same results now, paste your draft and ask for one specific type of edit at a time.

If you've opened ChatGPT recently and gone looking for canvas, the side-by-side editor where you and ChatGPT worked on a document together, you may have noticed it's not where it used to be. You're not imagining it. OpenAI has removed canvas from its current default models and replaced it with something new.

This guide explains what happened to ChatGPT canvas, what replaced it, how long you can still use the old version, and how to get the same results with the tools ChatGPT has now. Everything here comes from OpenAI's release notes and launch post.

What happened to ChatGPT canvas?

OpenAI says canvas is no longer available in its current default models, GPT-5.5 Instant and GPT-5.5 Thinking. In their place, writing and coding now happen in writing blocks and code blocks that appear directly inside ChatGPT's reply, rather than in a separate window.

There's some leftover confusion online, and on OpenAI's own site. The dedicated canvas help article now shows a page-not-found message, while OpenAI's capabilities overview still describes canvas as if nothing has changed. The original launch post now carries a note pointing readers to the release notes for current writing and coding features. The release notes are the page to trust.

Can I still use canvas in ChatGPT?

For a while, and only on some accounts. OpenAI says subscribers can keep using canvas temporarily through older legacy models, until those models are retired. OpenAI doesn't give an end date for canvas itself. Its general rule is that models usually stay in ChatGPT for around 90 days after a successor is released, which gives you a rough idea of how long legacy access lasts.

My advice: don't build a team process around canvas now. Move your templates and habits to the new writing blocks.

What was ChatGPT canvas?

Canvas opened a separate window where you and ChatGPT worked on writing or code side by side. It opened automatically when ChatGPT judged it useful, or you could ask for it by writing "use canvas" in your prompt. You could highlight a section so ChatGPT focused its edits there, edit the text yourself, and go back to earlier versions with the back button.

It came with a set of shortcuts, which are worth remembering because you can still ask for each one in plain words:

Canvas shortcutWhat it didHow to ask for it now
Suggest editsInline suggestions on your draft"Suggest specific edits to this draft, one per paragraph"
Adjust the lengthMade the text shorter or longer"Cut this to half the length without losing the main points"
Change reading levelRewrote from very simple to very advanced"Rewrite this for a reader new to the topic"
Add final polishChecked grammar, clarity and consistency"Check grammar, clarity and consistency and list what you changed"
Review codeInline suggestions to improve code"Review this code and suggest improvements line by line"
Fix bugsFound and fixed problems in code"Find the bugs in this code and explain each fix"
Port to a languageTranslated code into another language"Convert this code to Python and keep the same behaviour"

There were also coding shortcuts to add logs and add comments, and a writing shortcut to add emojis. Later updates let you run Python inside canvas, use canvas in GPTs, and share a canvas from its toolbar.

What replaced canvas in ChatGPT?

Writing blocks and code blocks. Instead of opening a separate panel, ChatGPT now puts editable writing or code into a block inside its reply. OpenAI hasn't published a separate help article on writing blocks yet, so the release notes are the only official description so far.

In practice, the way to work is the same as with any good editing session: give ChatGPT the draft, say exactly what kind of change you want, and ask it to show what it changed.

How to edit a document with ChatGPT now

  1. Paste your draft, or upload the document.
  2. Tell ChatGPT who it's for and what the piece needs to do.
  3. Ask for one type of change at a time, such as structure first, then tone, then polish.
  4. Ask it to list the changes so you can check them.
  5. Copy the final version into Google Docs or Word for formatting.

Copy this prompt

Here's a draft [type of document] for [audience].
First, suggest changes to the structure only. Don't rewrite anything yet.
List each suggestion with the reason, then wait for me to approve.

Copy and paste this prompt

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Now polish the approved version: fix grammar, tighten sentences and keep my tone, which is [tone].
Don't add new claims or numbers.
Show the final text, then a short list of what you changed.

If you want more prompts like these for everyday business writing, my collection of the best ChatGPT prompts is a good place to start.

One thing canvas did well was keep versions, so you could step back to an earlier draft. Without it, build that habit yourself. Ask ChatGPT to label each version it gives you, such as Version 1, Version 2 and so on, and paste the one you like into your document before asking for the next round of changes. That way a bad edit never wipes out a good draft.

It's also worth naming the job before you start. "Make this better" invites ChatGPT to change everything, including the parts you were happy with. "Shorten the introduction and leave the rest alone" gets you a precise edit you can check in seconds.

Are there alternatives to ChatGPT canvas?

If the side-by-side editing style suits you, a few tools offer something similar. Google's Gemini app has its own Canvas, a workspace for documents, code and simple apps that can export to Google Docs. Claude has artifacts, which open documents and small tools in a panel next to the chat. And if you mostly write long documents, working in Google Docs or Word with an AI assistant built in keeps everything in the file you'll send.

What should business owners do now?

  • Move any saved canvas documents you care about into Google Docs or Word.
  • Rewrite team instructions that say "open canvas" to describe the change you want instead.
  • Keep the shortcut table above as a cheat sheet of plain-language edit requests.
  • Ask for one type of edit at a time; it gives better results than "improve this".
  • Save your favourite edit requests as reusable prompts so the whole team asks for changes the same way.
  • Check any legacy-model chats you rely on and copy the finished text out while you still can.

Tools that work with ChatGPT writing blocks

Writing blocks are a drafting space, not a final home. The tools I'd pair them with are Google Docs or Microsoft Word for the finished document, Grammarly for a last proofread, Notion for storing prompts and templates your team reuses, and GitHub for any code you produce in code blocks. For anything client-facing, a human read-through still comes last.
