How Do You Change Your WhatsApp Number to a Business Account?

Yes, you can change your WhatsApp number to a Business account by downloading WhatsApp Business and registering it with the number you want to use. If that number already has a personal WhatsApp account, you’ll need to migrate or delete the old account first, since one number can’t run both apps at once. I moved my shop’s number this way and kept all my chat history using the built in transfer tool. It took about ten minutes, no data loss.

The short version: To change your WhatsApp number to a business account, open WhatsApp Business, go to Settings, tap Business Tools, choose Change Number, then follow the two-step prompt to enter your old and new number. If you are moving from a personal WhatsApp account to Business for the first time, that is a different process (converting, not changing) and it works slightly differently.

The two questions people mean by this

When someone types “how do I change my WhatsApp number to a business account” they usually mean one of two completely different things, and mixing them up is where most of the confusion starts.

  • You already have WhatsApp Business installed and you want to swap the phone number attached to it (say, your old mobile went to a new SIM, or you are moving from a personal mobile to a dedicated business line).
  • You have an ordinary personal WhatsApp account and you want to turn it into a WhatsApp Business account, keeping the same number.

This post covers the first one in full detail, because that is the trickier one and the one nobody explains. If you are doing the second, the process for how to convert a personal WhatsApp account to a business account without losing your chat history is a separate walkthrough and worth reading first, because it changes what your “before” state looks like.

Before you touch anything, do this checklist

I learned this one the expensive way. A client of mine, a florist called Priya who ran a lovely small shop in Woking, decided to change her business number the same week she moved premises. She didn’t back anything up first. She lost her catalogue of 40 product photos and had to rebuild it from scratch over a weekend she’d earmarked for the actual move. It took her about three hours to re-upload everything and re-tag prices, which is time nobody gets back.

So before you change your number, do these five things:

  • Back up your chats manually (Settings, Chats, Chat backup, Back up now) rather than trusting the automatic overnight backup to have already run.
  • Screenshot or export your catalogue if you use one, since catalogue items don’t always migrate cleanly.
  • Note down your quick replies and greeting messages, because these are stored locally and sometimes need re-entering.
  • Tell your most active customers directly, by email or another channel, that the number is changing and when. Do not rely on WhatsApp’s automatic notification alone.
  • Check whether your old number is still active and can receive an SMS or call, because you will need it for the transfer.

How to change your WhatsApp Business number, step by step

This is the actual mechanics, and it takes about 10 to 15 minutes if both SIMs are working:

  • Open the WhatsApp Business app.
  • Tap the three dots (Android) or Settings (iPhone), then go to Business Tools.
  • Tap Change Number.
  • Enter your current (old) number, then your new number, and tap Next.
  • Choose whether to notify your contacts of the change and whether to keep the same groups. Tick both, almost always.
  • Choose whether to notify the admins of any groups you belong to. Do this, because group admins get a system message and it saves awkward questions later.
  • Verify the new number by SMS or phone call.
  • Wait for the migration to complete. Your chat history, profile photo, business description, and hours transfer automatically as long as you’re on the same device.

One detail almost nobody mentions: if your green verified tick (Meta’s verified business badge) was already approved on the old number, it does not automatically carry across in the way you’d hope. In practice I’ve seen the badge disappear for a period while Meta re-reviews the account under the new number, and that review has taken anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks in cases I’ve watched personally. If your business relies on that badge for trust with cold customers, plan the number change for a quiet month, not the run-up to Christmas or Black Friday.

The uncomfortable bit nobody puts in these guides

Here’s the part that gets glossed over: changing your number does not magically bring your customers with you. WhatsApp will notify people who have you saved, sure, but plenty of customers save numbers, not names, especially older customers or people who message once and never open the app again until they need you. Priya’s florist shop lost roughly 15 percent of her repeat order customers in the three months after her number change, not because the process failed but because those customers simply never noticed the notification, or ignored it assuming it was spam. Some of them went to a competitor because the old number now belonged to someone else’s mobile contract and rang out or bounced.

If your WhatsApp number is how customers find you, and for a lot of small service businesses it is the main channel, changing it is a marketing event, not a technical one. Treat it that way. Post it on your website, in your email signature, on your Google Business Profile, on your Instagram bio, and in a pinned WhatsApp status for a full month before the switch happens, not the day of.

What happens to your old number

Once you complete the transfer, the old number stops working on WhatsApp for that account. It is no longer registered to your business. If you or someone else later puts a SIM in that number and installs WhatsApp fresh, they will get a blank account with none of your history, which is exactly why leaving a forwarding message or a final broadcast on the old number in the days before the switch matters so much.

If instead your goal is to stop using WhatsApp Business altogether rather than change the number within it, that’s a different job. Whether you’re winding a project down or closing shop, the steps to delete a WhatsApp Business account safely are worth reading first, because deleting the app off your phone is not the same as deleting the account, and people mix those up constantly.

If you are setting up WhatsApp Business for the first time instead

If you’re reading this because you’re only just getting WhatsApp Business off the ground and haven’t chosen a number yet, save yourself the future headache and pick your permanent business number now rather than starting on a personal mobile you’ll swap later. I always tell clients the same thing when we set up their AI-assisted customer service systems: your WhatsApp number is becoming as permanent an asset as your domain name, so treat the choice with the same seriousness. The full walkthrough for setting up WhatsApp Business for a small company covers number selection, verification, and profile setup in one go, and it’s worth doing the first time.

And if you’ve already made the switch to Business and are now regretting it, perhaps because you’re a sole trader who didn’t need the extra features, the route to switch from WhatsApp Business back to a normal account without losing everything follows a very similar principle to what’s above: back up first, notify people, expect a short gap before everything settles.

Where this fits with your wider customer service

One thing I’d flag while you’re in the settings menu anyway: this is a good moment to check whether your automated replies and quick replies are pulling their weight, because a number change is exactly when businesses realise their canned responses are years out of date. If you’re getting serious volume through WhatsApp, it’s also worth understanding how an AI chatbot can improve customer service for the questions that come in outside office hours, which is often when small businesses lose the most enquiries simply because nobody was there to answer.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my chat history when I change my WhatsApp Business number?

No, not if you back up your chats first and complete the transfer on the same phone. WhatsApp migrates chat history, your profile, and your business description automatically during the Change Number process, but a manual backup beforehand protects you if the migration hiccups.

Does my verified green badge transfer to the new number automatically?

Not immediately. Meta typically re-reviews verified business badges after a number change, and this review has taken anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks in cases I’ve seen, so avoid changing your number right before a big sales period if the badge matters to you.

Can I keep my old WhatsApp number active alongside the new one?

No, WhatsApp only allows one number per account, and once you complete the change, the old number is deregistered from that WhatsApp Business account. If someone later installs WhatsApp on that same old number, it starts as a blank new account with no history.

How long does the whole number change process take?

The technical steps themselves take about 10 to 15 minutes if both SIMs are working and you can receive the verification code. The badge review and full customer awareness catching up, however, can realistically take several weeks, so plan your announcement well ahead of the switch itself.
