Canva text to speech works in two places: the standalone Text-to-Speech and AI Voice Generator pages, where you type your text, pick a voice, select Generate AI Voice and download the result without opening a design, and AI voiceovers inside the editor, which sit next to Canva's AI music and sound effects. As of October 2026 AI Voice doesn't draw on your AI allowance on most paid plans, but it does on Canva Free and Pro Lite.
The catch: voice is cheap, music isn't, and Free pays for both
Canva sorts its AI tools by how much allowance they use, and the audio tools land in different groups (source: Canva Help Center). AI Voice is listed among the tools that don't count toward your monthly AI allowance on paid plans. Pro Lite is the exception, and on Canva Free and Pro Lite those same tools draw from the allowance.
The Music and Sound Effect Generator is a Premium AI tool, so it counts on every plan. If you're on Canva Free or Pro Lite, your monthly allowance is up to 20 uses of Standard or Premium tools in total, and voiceovers, music and images all come out of it.
There's an admin wrinkle too. On Canva Teams, Business and Enterprise, admins can turn off music and sound effect generation, which hides those options. Voiceover generation isn't covered by that admin control yet.
| Where | Need a design? | What you get | Allowance |

| AI music | Yes, or Canva AI on the homepage | A background track; a full track runs 30 seconds | Premium AI tool |
| AI sound effects | Yes, or Canva AI on the homepage | Transitions, ambience, UI clicks and short effects | Premium AI tool |
How to use Canva's Text-to-Speech pages
- Open the Text-to-speech or AI Voice Generator page.
- Enter the text you'd like turned into a voiceover.
- Below the text field, choose the voice you prefer. Some pages don't have this option.
- Select Generate AI Voice, signing in or creating a Canva account when prompted.
- Wait, then select Play to preview it.
- Optionally select Regenerate for a different result.
- Choose Download or Open in editor.
Canva runs five of these pages: Text-to-speech, AI Voice Generator, AI Character Voice Generator, TikTok Voice Generator and British Accent Generator. On the TikTok and British Accent pages, the voice or accent choice only appears after you select Create or Generate, in a dropdown. They're part of a bigger family of standalone tools, which I've mapped in my guide to Canva's AI generator pages.
Voiceovers, music and sound effects in the editor
Inside a design, Canva AI Voice turns text into natural-sounding narration for videos, demos and presentations. Canva's voiceover tips are short:
- Use short sentences.
- Add punctuation to guide the pacing.
- Spell out uncommon abbreviations.
For music, open a design that supports audio, such as a video, presentation or social post. Responsive designs like Websites don't support audio.
- Select Elements in the side panel, then Audio.
- Describe the track you want, such as 'upbeat pop with claps'.
- Use the Filter icon to show Free or Pro tracks, select Apply and preview.
- If nothing fits, select Canva AI in the side panel, describe the track and select Submit.
- Preview the results and add the one you like to your design.
You can also start from the homepage: select Canva AI, describe the track, and press Enter. Canva AI may ask follow-up questions. Sound effects work the same way.
- Music prompts: include genre, mood and tempo, add instruments like piano and strings, and say how long it should be and where it's used, such as an intro or a loopable background.
- Sound effect prompts: describe the source (whoosh, bell, footsteps, rain), the intensity and duration, and the environment, such as indoors, a street or a stadium.
What Canva won't generate
Canva's AI audio generation is blocked from copying or recreating copyrighted songs, imitating a specific artist with prompts 'in the style of' them, and producing protected brand music or well-known soundtracks. Prompts with violent or inappropriate themes are rejected too.
If a request is blocked, remove artist names, song titles and brand references, and describe the mood, genre, instruments and tempo instead. If the music doesn't match what you expected, Canva suggests writing the prompt in English and keeping it short and specific.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Can you use Canva's AI audio commercially?
For AI music and sound effects, yes, in commercial and personal projects, including marketing materials, social media content, adverts, presentations and videos. But there are limits: you don't own the generated audio, you can't sell, resell or sublicense a track on its own, and your use must follow Canva's AI Product Terms and Acceptable Use Policy.

My verdict on Canva text to speech
For a quick voiceover, I'd use the standalone page, since there's nothing to set up and on most paid plans it won't touch your allowance. For a video you're already editing, generate the voiceover in the editor so it sits right on your timeline. Write it the way you'd say it, in short sentences with plenty of punctuation. Then add a track from my guide on adding music in Canva, and if you need footage to go with it, Canva's AI video tools can build that too.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I see AI music generation in Canva?
The feature may still be rolling out to your account, or your current plan may not include access yet.
Why is audio generation missing from my team workspace?
An admin may have turned off audio generation for your team, which hides the music and sound effects options. Contact your team admin if you think you should have access.
Can I download just the generated audio?
It depends on the export options for your design type. If you can export the design, for example as an MP4, the audio is included.
Which languages does Canva AI voice support?
Language availability depends on the voiceover and generation system and may differ by region.
