A Telegram secret chat is a one-to-one conversation with end-to-end encryption, so only you and the other person can read it, not even Telegram. To start one, open the person's profile, tap the three dots and choose Start Secret Chat. The big catch is that secret chats live only on the device you started them on, and logging out deletes them.
Most people assume every Telegram chat is like this. It isn't. Normal Telegram chats are cloud chats, stored encrypted on Telegram's servers so they sync to all your devices. Secret chats are a separate type you have to switch on, one conversation at a time.
Here's what changes when you use one, how to set the self-destruct timer, and the limits Telegram itself admits to in its FAQ.
How to start a secret chat
- Open Telegram and go to the profile of the person you want to message.
- Tap the three dots menu.
- Tap Start Secret Chat.
- Wait for the chat to open, then send your first message.
You can create as many separate secret chats with the same person as you like. Each one is its own conversation.
What makes it different from a normal chat
| Feature | Cloud chat (normal) | Secret chat |
|---|---|---|
| Encryption | Client to server, stored encrypted in Telegram's cloud | End-to-end, client to client |
| Who can read it | You, the other person, stored on Telegram's servers | Only you and the other person |
| Available on your other devices | Yes, it syncs everywhere | No, only the device it started on |
| Forwarding messages | Allowed | Not allowed |
| Self-destruct timer | Media only, in private chats | All messages |
| If you log out | Messages stay in the cloud | Every secret chat is lost |
Two more things Telegram builds in: when you delete messages on your side of a secret chat, the other person's app is told to delete them too, and you can't forward anything out of one.
The device rule people miss
This is the bit that catches people out. Secret chats are tied to the device they were created on and to your current login session there. Telegram is clear that if you log out and log back in, you'll lose all your secret chats, and they can't be opened on your other phones, tablets or computers.
So if you're switching phones, reinstalling the app or logging out to fix a problem, anything in a secret chat is gone. There's no cloud copy to restore, because the whole point is that there isn't one.
How the self-destruct timer works
- Open the secret chat.
- Tap the clock icon. On iPhone it's in the message box, on Android it's in the top bar.
- Choose how long messages should last.
The timer starts when the message appears on the other person's screen, shown by two ticks. When it runs out, the message disappears from both devices.
One detail worth knowing: the timer only applies to messages sent after you set it. Anything already in the chat stays as it was.
Screenshots: what Telegram can and can't do
Telegram tries to send a notification if someone takes a screenshot in a secret chat. But it's honest that there's no bulletproof way to detect screenshots on some systems, naming some Android devices, so a screenshot can sometimes be taken without an alert. And nothing stops someone photographing their screen with another phone.
Telegram's own advice is to share sensitive information only with people you trust. I'd say the same. For more on what triggers an alert, see whether Telegram notifies you about screenshots.
Checking the chat is secure
When a secret chat is created, the two devices exchange encryption keys and Telegram shows a picture that represents the key for that chat. Newer versions also show a text version. If your picture matches the other person's, the chat is secure and nobody's sitting in the middle.
Telegram recommends comparing these in person, or over a channel you already know is safe. Comparing them inside the same chat you're trying to check doesn't prove much.

Why every chat isn't secret by default
Telegram explains it as a trade-off. Cloud chats give you your full history on any device, even if you lose your phone. Secret chats give you full control over messages you don't want stored anywhere, in exchange for losing that convenience. Instead of forcing one approach, Telegram lets you choose per conversation.
When I'd use one
- Sharing something private you don't want sitting on any server.
- A conversation you'd want to vanish on a timer.
- Talking to someone you've verified in person using the key picture.
For everyday group chats and anything you'll need on your laptop later, cloud chats are easier. If you're new to the app, my guide to finding people on Telegram covers the basics of getting started.
Deleting messages in a secret chat
Deleting works differently here too. When you delete messages on your side of a secret chat, the app on the other side is told to delete them as well. In a normal cloud chat, a self-destruct timer is only available for media in private chats, while in a secret chat it works on every message.
Before you switch phones
Because secret chats never reach the cloud, a phone change is where most of them are lost. Run through this first:
- Save anything you need from the secret chat somewhere safe before you go.
- Don't log out of Telegram on the old phone until you're done with it.
- Start a fresh secret chat with the same person on the new phone. Your old one won't appear there.
My advice
Use secret chats for the conversations that matter, and remember the trade-off before you rely on one. Don't log out of the phone holding them, set a timer if the messages shouldn't last, and don't assume a missing screenshot alert means nobody kept a copy.
Frequently asked questions
How do I start a secret chat on Telegram?
Open the profile of the person you want to message, tap the three dots menu, then tap Start Secret Chat.
Can Telegram read secret chats?
No. Secret chats use end-to-end encryption, so only you and the other person can read them. Telegram says nobody else can decipher them, including Telegram.
Do Telegram secret chats show on my other devices?
No. Secret chats are device-specific and only available on the device you started them on.
What happens to secret chats when I log out of Telegram?
They're lost. Secret chats are tied to your login session on that device, so logging out and back in deletes all of them.
Does Telegram tell you if someone screenshots a secret chat?
Telegram tries to send a notification, but it says there's no bulletproof way to detect screenshots on some systems, so alerts can be missed.
