To use Canva Magic Edit, select a photo, click Edit in the toolbar, choose Magic Edit under Tools, then brush or click the area you want to change (or choose All), describe what to add or replace, and select Generate. As of October 2026 it's the tool for adding or swapping things in a photo; moving an object is Magic Grab's job, extending the frame is Magic Expand, and deleting something is Magic Eraser.
The catch: four Magic tools, four different jobs
Canva's Magic tools sound alike and sit next to each other under Tools, so people grab the wrong one and decide it doesn't work. Each does one specific thing (source: Canva Help Center).
| Tool | What it does | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Magic Edit | Adds, replaces or changes whatever you brush or select, from a text prompt | Flags, text, faces and hands may not look right |
| Magic Grab | Lifts an object so you can move, resize or edit it, keeping the background | Only works on photos outside frames and grids |
| Magic Expand | Extends an image in any direction | Faces, hands and transparent backgrounds may not expand well |
| Magic Eraser | Deletes whatever you brush over | It removes; it doesn't replace |
| Background Remover | Removes the background, leaving only the subject | The background is gone, not kept |
The Magic Grab and Background Remover difference trips up a lot of people. Both isolate the subject, but Magic Grab keeps the background so you can move the subject around it, while Background Remover throws the background away. For deleting things, my guide to Canva's Magic Eraser walks through it.
How to use Magic Edit step by step
- Select the photo you want to edit.
- From the editor toolbar, select Edit.
- Under Tools, select Magic Edit.
- Choose All to edit the whole image, Brush to paint over an object, or Click to select an object. Click and drag to select several, or select Deselect to clear them.
- Describe what you want to add or replace in the selected area, then select Generate.
- Wait while Canva processes the edit.
In Brush mode, drag the slider left for a smaller brush or right for a bigger one. Select Reset brushing to start again, or Continue to move on to the prompt.
How to brush and prompt for cleaner results
Canva's own tips are more specific than most tutorials, and they explain why so many first attempts look odd.
- Brush the shape of what you're adding. A round area for a tennis ball, a long thin one for a pencil, a tree-shaped one for a tree.
- Don't brush too thin. Thin brushings can produce empty results. Brush nearby elements too, so the AI picks up perspective and the direction of light.
- Brush only where you want the change. To add a hat, brush only where the hat should sit.
- Add one thing at a time. Want lots of balloons? Add one, then repeat.
- Leave size out of the prompt. Don't write 'a large bird'; brush the whole area you want the bird to fill.
- For colour or material changes, try prompts like 'change jacket to blue' or 'make the jacket look like it's made of fur'.
- To change the whole scene or style, brush the entire image or select all the objects in it.
- Skip celebrities and popular brands. They may be blocked for copyright reasons.
What Magic Edit still gets wrong
Canva lists three limitations openly, and knowing them saves you from thinking you've done something wrong.
- The result's light direction, colour or style sometimes doesn't match the rest of the photo.
- Sometimes the result is empty, unexpected or different from what you intended.
- The brushed or selected area can look more pixelated than the image around it.
When it happens, change one thing at a time: re-brush a slightly bigger area, simplify the prompt, or add the object in smaller steps.
Using Magic Grab and Magic Expand
Magic Grab lifts an object out so you can reposition it:
- Select the photo, then Edit in the toolbar.
- Go to Tools, select See all, and scroll to the bottom for Magic Grab.
- Click to select an object, click and drag for several, or use Brush.
- Select Grab and wait, then drag, resize or edit the subject independently of the background.
To undo it, use the undo button or shortcut in the same session, or delete the grabbed subject and click Magic Grab again to remove the tick and restore the original. Magic Grab also works in Canva Docs, Video and the Photo Editor outside the main editor.
Magic Expand recovers what's just outside the frame. Select the photo, select Edit, go to Tools, See All, then Magic Expand. Choose a size or drag any crop handle beyond the border, then select Expand. It's how you turn a vertical shot into a horizontal one without reshooting.

Who can use Magic Edit
If you're a team admin, teacher or team brand designer, you choose who can use Magic Edit in your team or class. Canva Education admins and owners can switch it on for students. Prompts are reviewed automatically for terms that might produce inappropriate images, and there's a Report button for anything unsafe.

My verdict on Magic Edit
Magic Edit is brilliant for small, specific changes: a colour swap, an extra prop, a cleaner sky. It's weakest with faces, hands and text, so I wouldn't use it on a headshot. Brush generously, add one thing at a time, and don't write sizes into the prompt. Frequently asked questions
Can I zoom or undo brush strokes while brushing in Magic Edit?
No. In Brush mode, zooming and undoing or redoing brush strokes won't work. Use Reset brushing to start again.
Why can't some team members see Magic Edit?
Depending on the language set in Canva, some team members may not have access even when it's enabled.
Does Magic Grab work on a photo inside a frame?
No. Magic Grab doesn't support images in frames or grids, so take the photo out of the frame first.
Can I download a Magic Expand image on its own?
Only as part of a design. Canva says you can download the expanded image as a separate file only if you download it as part of a design.
