How to Edit Photos in Canva (Tools, Fixes and Filters)

To edit photos in Canva, upload the photo, click it and select Edit in the toolbar. From there you can adjust brightness and colour, add filters, remove or replace the background, erase objects, crop and upscale. You can also open Photo editor from the Canva homepage to edit a picture on its own and download it.

You don't need Photoshop to make your photos look good on social media. For most small business jobs, such as brightening a product shot, cutting out a background or fixing a slightly dull headshot, Canva's photo editor does the job in a couple of minutes. Here's how to use it, tool by tool.

Two ways to open Canva's photo editor

How to edit a photo in Canva, step by step

  1. Upload your photo, or drag it into your design from Uploads.
  2. Click the photo and select Edit.
  3. Start with Adjust and try Auto-adjust for a quick fix.
  4. Fine-tune brightness, contrast and saturation with the sliders.
  5. Add a filter if you want a particular look, and lower the intensity.
  6. Crop to the shape you need.
  7. Add it to your design or download it.

The main photo editing tools

Magic EditAdds, removes or replaces objects in the photo
UpscaleUses AI to sharpen low-resolution images
CropTrims the photo

Edit just the background or just the subject

This is the Adjust feature most people don't spot. Under Select area, you can choose to adjust All, the Foreground, the Background, or paint over an area with a Brush. That means you can brighten your face without blowing out the sky behind you, or darken a busy background so your product stands out. It's the closest Canva gets to a professional edit, and it takes seconds.

How to add and adjust a filter

  1. Click the photo and select Edit.
  2. Go to Filters and select See all.
  3. Pick a filter.
  4. Drag the Intensity slider down. Most filters look best at half strength or less.
  5. To remove it, select Remove.

Filters work on photos inside frames and grids too, which is handy for keeping a whole collage in the same style.

The catch: Upscale only works once, and it ignores your crop

Upscale is brilliant for rescuing an old, blurry photo, but there are rules. Canva says it works on JPG or PNG images between 10 x 10 pixels and 25 megapixels, and you can only upscale an image once. On the free plan, it uses your AI allowance. The sneaky one: Upscale checks the original image size, not your cropped version. If you've cropped a big photo down to a small area and want that area sharper, download the cropped image, upload it as a new file, then upscale it.

Downloading your edited photo

For photos, download as JPG, which Canva recommends for photographs because the file stays small. Use PNG when the image has a transparent background, for example a product cut-out you'll place on other designs. A simple editing routine I'd follow

  1. Crop first, so you aren't adjusting parts of the photo you'll throw away.
  2. Run Auto-adjust and see if you like it. If it's too much, lower the effect.
  3. Fix the subject and the background separately with Select area.
  4. Add one filter at low intensity, and use the same one on every photo in the post.
  5. Zoom in to check edges if you removed a background.

Keep it natural

The biggest mistake I see is over-editing. Heavy filters, cranked-up saturation and over-smoothed faces make a small business look less trustworthy, not more. Aim for photos that look like a slightly better day, not a different person. Real, lightly edited photos of you, your team and your work beat stock images every time.

My verdict

Canva's photo editor covers everything most business owners need: Adjust for light and colour, filters for a consistent look, background removal for product shots and Upscale for rescuing old images. Use Select area to edit the subject and background separately, keep filters subtle, and remember Upscale only works once on the original size. Select Photo editor on the homepage and upload a photo, or click a photo in a design and select Edit.

Can Canva edit only the background of a photo?

Yes. In Adjust, choose Background under Select area and drag the sliders.
