Cancel Gemini Subscription (2026): Steps, What You Lose and When to Downgrade

To cancel your Gemini subscription, go to gemini.google.com, click Settings & help at the bottom, then Manage subscription, which opens Google One, and click Cancel membership, then Cancel. As of October 2026, when an AI Pro plan ends you lose Pro chats, Pro-only features and Google One extras such as expanded storage, so downgrading can be the smarter move.

The first thing that confuses people: a Gemini subscription is a Google AI plan that you buy through Google One. That's why the cancel button isn't really in Gemini at all. Gemini just sends you to the right Google One screen.

How to cancel a Google AI plan from Gemini

  1. On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
  2. At the bottom, click Settings & help.
  3. Click Manage subscription. This opens your Google One settings.
  4. Click Cancel membership.
  5. Click Cancel to confirm.

These steps are for a personal Google Account. If Gemini comes through a work or school account, the plan's managed by your administrator, and this route won't apply.

Google's help page doesn't say anything about refunds or what happens to the rest of the billing period, so I won't guess. Read the Google One screen before you confirm, because that's where the terms for your plan will show.

What stops working when AI Pro ends

Google lists the losses plainly, and some of them have nothing to do with chatting to Gemini:

What you loseWhat that means day to day
Gemini app in ProYou can't start new chats with Pro, and you can't continue chats you created with Pro
Pro-only featuresAnything Google marks as Pro-only stops working
Expanded storage across Drive, Gmail and PhotosYour Google storage drops back, which is the loss most people don't see coming
Direct support from Google expertsBack to standard help routes
Exclusive member benefitsThe extras attached to your Google One membership go
Gemini in Gmail, Docs and moreNo more Gemini inside your everyday Google apps
YouTube Premium Lite individual planThat bundled YouTube plan ends too

The first row catches people out. If you've got a long-running Pro chat with a project's history in it, you won't be able to carry on in it after the plan ends. I'd copy out anything you need first.

Storage is the other one. If your Drive, Gmail and Photos have grown into the extra space, I'd check your usage before cancelling rather than finding out when an email bounces.

Downgrade instead of cancelling

If it's the price of the top tier rather than the whole idea you're unhappy with, you can move down a plan in Google One:

  1. On your computer, go to Google One.
  2. Click Manage membership, then Change membership plan.
  3. Under Downgrade options, select the plan you want. If there's no downgrade option, you're already on the lowest plan.
  4. Click See all benefits to review what the new plan includes.
  5. Click Yes, continue to confirm the new plan and details, then select your payment method.

The plans aren't just storage tiers. Google's limits page shows the difference in Gemini itself: Google AI Plus has limits 2x higher than standard and a 128k token context window, while AI Pro has 4x higher limits and a 1 million token window. Downgrading from Pro to Plus keeps you above the free version, rather than dropping you straight to it. If you're weighing whether Pro is worth keeping, my guide to what Google AI Pro includes lays it out.

What you still get without a plan

Cancelling doesn't lock you out of Gemini. Without an AI plan you keep standard limits and a 32k token context window. Limits refresh every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit. Google also warns that during periods of high demand, heavier features such as Deep Research may be unavailable to people without a plan, and their limits may be cut first. This guide to what free Gemini includes covers it in more detail, and my breakdown of Gemini usage limits explains how the five-hour and weekly caps work.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

One more detail if you're cancelling because you keep hitting limits: Google says that if you have a Google AI subscription and reach your limit, you can carry on the conversation with Flash-Lite. Running out isn't a dead end on a paid plan, so it may be worth staying put rather than paying for a higher tier.

Before you press Cancel

  • Copy anything you need from Pro chats, because you won't be able to continue them.
  • Check your Google storage against what you'll have after the plan ends.
  • Note that plans are only available in certain countries, so check before relying on re-subscribing after a move.
  • If you might come back, the age rules apply: 13 or over in most countries, and 18 or over in the EEA, Switzerland or the United Kingdom.
  • If it's a work account, talk to your administrator instead.

My verdict: I'd downgrade rather than cancel if it's the storage or Gemini in Gmail and Docs you'd miss. Skip cancelling halfway through a project that lives in a Pro chat; finish it, save what you need, then cancel. And if the free version covers what you do, my everyday Gemini guide will help you get the most from it. Plans and features change often, so check Google's own help page for the latest.

If you're trimming your AI subscriptions down to the ones that earn their keep, that's the kind of AI enablement I help with. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cancel my Gemini subscription?

Go to gemini.google.com, click Settings & help at the bottom, then Manage subscription. That opens Google One, where you click Cancel membership, then Cancel.

What happens when I cancel Google AI Pro?

You can't start or continue chats with Pro or use Pro-only features, and you lose Google One benefits including expanded storage across Drive, Gmail and Photos, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and the YouTube Premium Lite individual plan.

Can I downgrade instead of cancelling?

Yes. In Google One, click Manage membership, then Change membership plan, and pick a plan under Downgrade options. If there's no downgrade option, you're on the lowest plan.

Can I still use Gemini after cancelling?

Yes. Without an AI plan you keep standard usage limits, which refresh every 5 hours until a weekly limit, and a 32k token context window, as of October 2026.

How do I cancel Gemini on a work account?

You don't, from your side. Google says work and school plans are managed by your administrator, so ask whoever runs your Google Workspace.
