Camera Prompts for AI: Angles, Lenses and Shots to Copy

Camera prompts for AI are the photography words that control how an image is framed: shot size (close-up, medium, wide), angle (eye level, low angle, overhead), lens (macro, wide-angle, telephoto) and light. Google's own template for realistic images ends with 'shot from a [camera angle] with a [lens type]', so put them at the end of your prompt.

Ask an AI tool for "a photo of my product" and it'll guess the camera for you, usually a dead-centre shot at eye level. Tell it the angle, the lens and the light, and you'll get something that looks like a photographer took it. That's the whole trick, and it works in Gemini, ChatGPT, Midjourney and the AI video tools too.

Google's image generation guide puts it plainly: use photographic and cinematic language to control the composition. Below is a cheat sheet of the words that matter, followed by copy-paste camera prompts for the shots small businesses need most.

TypeWords to useWhat it does
Shot sizeextreme close-up, close-up, medium shot, full shot, wide shotHow much of the subject fills the frame
Angleeye level, low angle, high angle, overhead, Dutch angleWhere the camera sits relative to the subject
Lensmacro, wide-angle, telephoto, fisheyeDetail, distortion and how squashed the background looks

The template Google recommends

Google's template for photorealistic images reads: a photorealistic [type of shot] of a [subject] in a [setting], then the light, then shot from a [camera angle] with a [lens type]. Its own example is a wide-angle shot of a coral reef, shot from a low perspective with a wide-angle lens. Following that order keeps your camera words from getting lost in the middle of a long description.

How to get better results with camera prompts

  1. Pick one angle and one lens. "Low angle with a wide-angle lens" is clear. Three angles in one prompt confuses the model.
  2. Describe the light as well as the camera. Google's product example spells out the lighting setup and its purpose, not just the angle.
  3. Choose the shape first. Decide on square, portrait or widescreen before you prompt, so the composition fits where the image will live.
  4. Change one thing at a time. If the shot's nearly right, keep everything else and only swap the angle or lens in a follow-up.
  5. Use real photography terms. Words like telephoto, macro and golden hour carry a lot of meaning that vague words like 'nice' don't.

My verdict

Camera words are the easiest upgrade you can make to AI images. You don't need to be a photographer, you just need a handful of terms: a shot size, an angle, a lens and the light. Save the five prompts that suit your business best and reuse them, and your images will start to look consistent and deliberate rather than random.

Frequently asked questions

What are camera prompts in AI image generation?

They're photography terms you add to a prompt to control framing and perspective: shot size, camera angle, lens type, focus and lighting.

Where do camera angles go in an AI prompt?

Google's photorealistic template puts them at the end: describe the shot, subject, setting and light first, then 'shot from a [camera angle] with a [lens type]'.

What camera angle works best for product photos?

A slightly elevated angle with soft studio light is a safe default. Use overhead for flat lays, macro for texture and a low angle when you want the product to look bold.

Do camera prompts work in AI video tools?

Yes. Video tools respond to camera moves like push-in, orbit, tracking and reveal shots, as well as the same lens and lighting words.

Can I control the aspect ratio in my prompt?

Often, yes. Google's example prompts include the aspect ratio, and Gemini's image models support a range of ratios including square, portrait and widescreen shapes.
