Pop Up Blocker Chrome Extensions (2026): 10 Compared

A pop-up blocker Chrome extension is built to stop the new windows, tabs and pop-unders that sites try to open, and some also hide overlays or cookie notices. Several share the name Popup Blocker, so the publisher, users count, ratings count and last updated date are what tell them apart. Ten follow in no particular order.

Search the Chrome Web Store for a pop-up blocker and you'll see the same two words on listing after listing. Going by their own descriptions, some close tabs and windows that ad-heavy sites open, some go after pop-unders, and a few also take on overlays, cookie notices or notifications. This page sticks to pop-ups and overlays, not ad blocking in general.

Seven of the ten carry Popup Blocker in their name, so I've put the publisher in brackets where two would otherwise look the same. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, with users, average rating, ratings count, publisher and last updated date taken from each listing, as of Oct 2026.

Ten pop-up and overlay blockers compared

Type and Good for come from what each listing says about itself. Yes in the last column means the listing says the extension is free; Not stated means it doesn't say either way, as of Oct 2026.

Ten extensions for unwanted pop-ups

Poper Blocker

Best for: Clearing cookie requests and notifications as well as pop-ups, from poperblocker.com, the largest listing here at 2,000,000 users as of Oct 2026.

Popup Blocker (block pop up requests)

Best for: Stopping pop-up requests on any website with a small listing from the publisher PopupBlocker, last updated January 14, 2026.

Best for: Anyone after a light blocker for pop-ups and pop-unders, from the publisher Jorvi, the smallest listing here at 3,000 users.

Popup Blocker (Olumidesan)

Best for: Sites that throw open new tabs and windows, since this listing from Olumidesan says it closes them automatically.

Popup Blocker (popupsblocker.org)

Best for: People who watch streams or download files and keep getting advertising pop-ups, which is the job this listing describes.

Popup Blocker (strict)

Best for: Fans of open source, as this listing from yokris.dev says the extension is free and open source and blocks all types of pop-ups.

What the store numbers show about pop-up blockers

Users and ratings don't move in step. Poper Blocker shows 81.7K ratings on 2,000,000 users, while Smart popup blocker shows 68 ratings on 100,000 users, as of Oct 2026. Popup Blocker Pro and Popup Blocker (strict) both show 300,000 users, yet one has 7.8K ratings and the other 1.1K.

Dates matter here too. Popup Blocker for Google Chrome was last updated on January 25, 2022 and PopUpOFF on August 10, 2023, while the newest update on this list is dated October 20, 2026, as of Oct 2026. And the dllplayer.com listing shares its one line description word for word with the yokris.dev listing, so the summary alone won't tell you which you're looking at.

Choosing by the kind of pop-up that bothers you

  • New tabs and windows keep opening: pick a blocker whose listing talks about pop-up requests or closing tabs that sites open.
  • Pop-unders hide behind your window: pick one that names pop-unders on its listing.
  • Overlays and cookie notices cover the page: pick one whose listing covers overlays and cookie notifications, not just new windows.
  • Streaming and download sites are the problem: pick one whose listing is written for those sites.
  • You'd like to see the code: pick one whose listing says it's open source.

Before you install a pop-up blocker

  1. Read the Offered by line, because seven of these share the words Popup Blocker.
  2. Check what the extension asks permission to read and change when you add it.
  3. Compare users with the ratings count and the last updated date.
  4. Keep one blocker switched on at a time, so you know which one is doing what.
  5. If a site you trust stops working, pause the blocker for that site and try again.

A pop-up blocker isn't security software. If you're choosing that too, I've looked at whether Malwarebytes is safe and whether Bitdefender is safe to use.

Do you make a pop-up blocker for Chrome? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on pop-up blockers

Work out what's annoying you first: new tabs, pop-unders, overlays or cookie notices. Then look only at listings that describe that job, and choose by publisher, users count, ratings count and last updated date rather than by the name, because the names barely change from one listing to the next. If two of those four look thin, keep scrolling.

And if pop-ups keep appearing even when you're not browsing, that's a job for security software rather than an extension, so my look at whether Avast is safe is worth a read.

Frequently asked questions

What does a pop-up blocker Chrome extension do?

Going by the listings here, it's built to stop new windows, tabs and pop-unders that sites try to open. A few also say they hide overlays, cookie notices or notifications.

Is a pop-up blocker the same as an ad blocker?

Not quite. These extensions describe pop-ups, pop-unders and overlays. A couple also mention ads, but this list covers the pop-up job only.

Are pop-up blocker extensions free?

Two of the ten listings say they're free as of Oct 2026. The other eight don't say either way, so check the listing before you add one.

Why are so many extensions called Popup Blocker?

Publishers reuse the same plain title, so seven listings here share those two words. The Offered by line on each listing tells you who's behind it.

How can I tell if a pop-up blocker is still looked after?

Check the last updated date on the listing. On this list it runs from January 25, 2022 to October 20, 2026, as of Oct 2026.
