A WordPress chat plugin puts a chat window or button on your site so visitors can reach you while they're browsing. Some connect to a hosted live chat service with an inbox and chatbots, while others are buttons that open WhatsApp or another app. Ten free plugins follow in no particular order, with directory numbers as of Oct 2026.
A chat box on your site is one of the quickest ways to turn a browsing visitor into a conversation. But the plugins doing it are built in two quite different ways, and that difference decides where your messages go, who holds the data and how you answer.
The ten below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, each described from its own WordPress.org directory page. If you're weighing up software rather than plugins, my guide to what to look for in live chat software goes deeper on features.
WordPress chat plugins compared
Each plugin here is free to install from the WordPress.org plugin directory, as of Oct 2026, so the free plan column reads Yes. That covers the plugin itself. Where a plugin connects to a hosted chat service, that service sets its own plans, so check the vendor's site.

Hosted chat service or a simple button?
Not all of these are live chat. Chaty and Click to Chat are floating buttons that open WhatsApp or other apps, while Tidio, Smartsupp, Crisp, Formilla, Chatway and HelpCrunch are plugins that connect your site to a hosted chat service.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- A button plugin sends the visitor to an app they already use, so the conversation happens in WhatsApp, Messenger or similar, on the phone or account you've linked.
- A hosted service plugin puts a chat window on your site and sends messages to the vendor's inbox, often with chatbots and AI on top.
Some hosted services go further and pull other channels into the same inbox, so a WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram or email message lands alongside your website chats. That's handy if one person answers everything, and it's more than you need if all you want is a WhatsApp button.
What the plugin guidelines say about hosted chat
The WordPress Plugin Handbook's detailed plugin guidelines cover both sides. Guideline 6 says Software as a Service is permitted, and guideline 7 says plugins may not track users without their consent.
That's why so many chat plugins are connectors: the plugin is free in the directory and the chat itself runs on the vendor's service. So the account, the data terms and where your visitors' messages are stored are the vendor's, not WordPress.org's. Read those terms, and make sure your privacy notice mentions the chat tool before you switch it on.
Updates and installs worth checking
The oldest update in the list, as of Oct 2026, is Tawk.To (14 Jan 2026, tested to WordPress 6.9.10), and the dedicated WhatsApp button is the bigger of the two button plugins at 600,000+ installs. An older update isn't automatically a problem, but on a plugin that runs across your whole site, it's a good reason to look before you install.

My plain advice on chat plugins
Decide first whether you want to staff a live chat or just make it easy for people to message you in an app they already use. If it's live chat, pick the service whose inbox you'll be happy answering from every day, and check its data terms. If it's a button, keep it simple and point it at the number or account you check most.
If you'd like automated answers on top, my roundup of chatbot builders covers the AI side.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between live chat and a chat button?
Live chat puts a chat window on your site and sends messages to an inbox you answer from. A chat button opens WhatsApp or another app, so the conversation happens there.
Can I add WhatsApp chat to WordPress?
Yes. Two plugins here are floating buttons that open WhatsApp and other apps, and some live chat services also bring WhatsApp into their inbox.
Are WordPress chat plugins free?
The plugins here are free in the WordPress.org plugin directory, as of Oct 2026. Hosted chat services behind some of them set their own plans.
Do chat plugins affect privacy?
They can. The WordPress Plugin Handbook says plugins may not track users without their consent, and hosted chat services hold the messages, so read the vendor's data terms.
Do chat plugins include chatbots?
Several do. Many of the hosted services here pair human live chat with AI chatbots.
