A video downloader Chrome extension adds a button to the browser that saves a video from the page you're on as a file. Many share almost the same name, so the publisher, user count and rating are what tell them apart. Eight follow in no particular order, straight from their Chrome Web Store listings.
Search the Chrome Web Store for a video downloader and you'll get a wall of lookalike names. They're different extensions from different publishers, and some are rated far lower than others.
Every detail below comes from each listing as of Oct 2026: users, rating, number of ratings, last updated date and publisher. That's the only source I've used, and I've said nothing about which sites each one works on. Only download videos you own or have permission to save, and don't treat any of these as a way around a platform's terms.
Chrome video downloaders compared by publisher and numbers
I chose these from the store listing alone: users, rating, number of ratings, last updated date and the publisher shown under the name. The free plan column says Yes only where the listing text mentions free use; Not stated means it didn't say. Nothing here comes from my own downloads.

MAX Video Downloader
Best for: Stream formats such as HLS and MPEG-DASH, live stream recording and audio or subtitle extraction, from a listing that names free use.
Online video downloader

Lookalike names: reading a listing before you install
Here's the thing worth knowing before you click Add. On these listings the ratings range from 1.9 for Online video downloader to 5.0 for MAX Video Downloader, as of Oct 2026. Same store, same job, very different feedback.
Because the names are so alike, check three things on the listing: the publisher under the name, the user count and the number of ratings behind the stars. A 5.0 from a couple of thousand people and a 4.4 from tens of thousands tell you different things.
What sort of downloader for what sort of file
- One video now and then: a simple downloader with a solid rating and a recent update.
- Building a list to save later: a downloader that collects videos into a list.
- Streams that arrive in pieces: a downloader that names stream formats such as HLS or DASH on its listing.
- Audio or subtitles only: a downloader that lists audio and subtitle extraction.
People who read this usually go on to the best volume booster extensions.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Recently updated or left alone
Last updated dates on these listings run from Jan 18, 2026 to Oct 21, 2026, as of Oct 2026. That matters more for downloaders than for most extensions, because a tool that hasn't been touched in months can fall behind when websites change how they serve video.
So if two listings look alike, let the more recent update and the larger pile of ratings settle it. And if an extension you rely on suddenly stops saving anything, check its listing for a new version before you go hunting for a replacement.
Once you've sorted this, the best download manager extensions is worth a look.
Four checks before you click Add to Chrome
- Match the publisher on the listing to the one you expect, because the names are nearly identical.
- Read the permissions Chrome asks you to approve.
- Read the newest reviews, not just the average.
- Remove the extension once you've finished with it.

My plain advice on saving videos in Chrome
Go for a listing with a clear publisher, a recent update and plenty of ratings, and keep it for your own files, like webinar recordings or videos a client has sent you. If you need footage for your own content, my guide to free B-roll for YouTube videos is a better starting point than downloading someone else's.
And if you only need part of a video you've made, my walkthrough on clipping a YouTube video might save you a download altogether.

Frequently asked questions
What does a video downloader Chrome extension do?
It adds a button to Chrome that saves a video from the page you're on as a file. Some also collect videos into a list or handle stream formats.
Why do so many video downloaders have the same name?
Lots of publishers use the same few words in their titles. The publisher, user count and rating on the listing are how you tell them apart.
Are video downloader extensions free?
Some listings here mention free use in their own text and the rest don't say either way, as of Oct 2026. Check the listing before you rely on it.
Is it safe to install a video downloader extension?
Stick to listings with a named publisher, a recent update and plenty of ratings, and read what the extension asks permission to do before you add it.
Which video formats can these extensions save?
It depends on the listing. Some name stream formats such as HLS and MPEG-DASH, others name common files like MP4 and WEBM, so check the listing for the format you need.
