Van tracking in the UK comes in two kinds: a theft tracker that helps get a stolen van back, and fleet telematics that shows where every vehicle is, how it's being driven and whether tachograph and walkaround checks are done. Many small fleets end up needing both. Ten UK providers follow, listed in no particular order.
If you run vans, you're usually buying a tracker for one of two reasons. Either a van has been stolen, or nearly was, and you want it found fast. Or you're running enough vehicles that you can't see who's where, which jobs are late and how hard the vans are being driven. Those are different products, sold by different kinds of company, and mixing them up is the most common way to end up with the wrong contract.
This list is for UK tradespeople and small to mid-size fleets. The ten providers below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from each provider's own UK website, read as of Oct 2026. Tools and plant are a separate job with separate trackers, so this page sticks to vans and the people driving them.
UK van trackers and fleet telematics at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each vendor's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version or an open source edition. Trial only means it names a time-limited free trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, so check the vendor's own site before you sign up.

Check who you'd be signing with first
Here's what I found reading the provider pages, and it's the thing most comparison sites haven't caught up with. UK fleet tracking has been through a wave of takeovers. The old Fleetmatics and Verizon Connect addresses both now land on the Geotab UK site, which carries a notice saying Verizon Connect Great Britain is now part of the Geotab family. Masternaut's site announces it's now MICHELIN Connected Fleet. Ctrack has acquired Inseego's fleet management division. And Trakm8's own news section says it has become part of Omegro.
None of that is a reason to avoid any of them. Existing customers are told their products and support carry on as usual. But a tracking contract usually runs for years, so it's worth asking which company you'd be dealing with, whose platform you'd end up on, and whether the hardware you're fitting will still be supported after the next integration.

Theft tracker or fleet telematics: two different purchases
- Stolen vehicle recovery tracker. One box in one van, built to be found when the van goes missing. The theft-led providers here sell Thatcham-approved trackers, and the specialist pages describe categories such as S5, S5+ and S7, a monitoring alarm centre and police response. One recovery specialist has been doing this for over 30 years and sells separately to van and small fleet owners.
- Fleet telematics. A device in every vehicle feeding a web platform and a driver app: live location, journey history, driver behaviour scores, fuel use, maintenance reminders and routing. It's run by an office, not just checked after a theft.
- Video telematics. Most fleet providers now sell AI dash cams alongside the tracker, with forward and driver-facing cameras that flag distraction, fatigue and harsh driving. It's become the headline product on several home pages, and it's a step up from a standalone dash cam because the footage sits beside the tracking data.
- Plug-and-play units. Some trackers plug in rather than being wired in, which suits a sole trader who just wants to see where the van is on a phone app.
If your worry is theft, start with the recovery specialists and check what your insurer asks for. If your worry is late jobs, fuel and driving standards, start with telematics. Plenty of fleets end up running both.
UK rules a fleet tracking system can help with
This is where a UK-specific provider earns its place over a generic GPS app. Reading the UK pages, these are the compliance jobs the providers name themselves:
- Tachograph downloads and analysis for vehicles that need them, named by Samsara, Webfleet, Geotab and Teletrac Navman, with a transport specialist listing tachograph analysis too.
- Drivers' hours management, so you can see who's close to their limits before a check does.
- Digital walkaround checks and defect reporting, replacing paper sheets in the cab.
- Driver licence verification, so you know every driver is still licensed to drive what they're driving.
- Direct Vision Standard support for lorries going into London, listed by one provider here.
- GDPR and driver privacy settings, which two providers put in their main menus.
Samsara's UK page puts it plainly: stay ahead of DVSA expectations and protect your O-licence. If you run vehicles that need an operator's licence, those tools matter as much as the map.
Questions to ask before you sign a tracking contract
- Which company owns the platform today, and what happens to your devices if it's merged into another?
- Is the tracker wired in or plug-and-play, and who fits it? Some providers offer a local fitting service and others work through installation partners.
- Does it cover tachograph, drivers' hours and walkaround checks, or only location?
- Can it track trailers and plant as well, or will you need a separate asset tracker?
- Will it work with the software you already run for jobs, routes or deliveries?
- How will you tell drivers what's tracked, when and why?
Tracking is one part of keeping vans on the road. My guide on how small businesses save time on vehicle management covers the admin side, and if you run deliveries, my piece on improved delivery tracking covers what customers notice.

My plain advice on choosing a van tracker
Decide what you're protecting first. A sole trader with one van and a theft worry needs a recovery tracker their insurer accepts, not a fleet platform. A business with five or more vans that's losing hours to late jobs and paperwork needs telematics, and it's worth paying attention to the UK compliance tools, not just the map.
Then ask every provider the same questions, get a demo on your own vans and routes, and read the contract length before you get excited about dash cams. With this many takeovers going on, I'd also want it in writing who supports the hardware if the brand changes again.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a vehicle tracker and telematics?
A vehicle tracker is mainly about finding a vehicle, especially after a theft. Telematics adds driving behaviour, routes, fuel, maintenance and compliance data across a whole fleet, viewed in a web platform and driver app.
Do I need a Thatcham-approved tracker?
If you want one for theft recovery and insurance, it's worth checking. Thatcham categories such as S5 and S7 are what insurers and recovery providers use to describe tracker standards, so ask your insurer which one they accept.
Can a fleet tracker help with tachograph rules?
Yes. Several UK providers here name tachograph downloads, drivers' hours management and digital walkaround checks among their tools, which suits operators who need an O-licence.
Is it legal to track company vans in the UK?
Tracking business vehicles is common, but the data says where people are, so treat it as personal data. Tell drivers what's tracked and why, and look for the GDPR and privacy settings some providers build in.
Is there a free trial of fleet tracking software?
One provider on this list names a free trial on its UK page, shown in the free plan column. Most others offer a demo or a quote instead.
