A translate Chrome extension turns words, paragraphs or whole web pages into your language without leaving the page. Some translate what you select, some do the full page, and a few handle PDFs and video subtitles too. The eight below are Chrome Web Store listings in no particular order, from two very big names to much smaller makers.
You land on a page in a language you don't read, and copying chunks into a separate tab soon gets tedious. A translate extension does the job right there: select a phrase or ask for the whole page, and the translation appears where you're reading.
Two of these come from the companies behind the best known translation services, and the rest come from smaller makers, some of which use those same engines underneath. Their listings show very different user numbers and ratings, which is where this list gets interesting. If you translate for work, my guide to the translation mistakes businesses make is worth a look too.
How I picked and compared these translators
Each extension was picked from its Chrome Web Store listing and compared on what that listing shows: users, star rating, number of ratings, last updated date and the publisher. The users, ratings and dates in the entries further down are as each listing showed them, as of Oct 2026. In the free plan column, Yes means the listing text says free or names a free version; Not stated means it doesn't say.

Web Translate
Best for: Right click translation using AI or Google, for people who like translating a bit at a time; 30,000 users and a 3.6 rating.
The biggest translator has the lowest rating
This one surprised me. On the Chrome Web Store, Google Translate has the lowest rating on this list at 3.0, with 39,000,000 users, while Translate It has the highest at 4.7, with 9,000 users, as of Oct 2026.
A huge user base brings reviews from every kind of user, and a small one is often rated by a few keen fans. Neither number tells the whole story, so look at users, rating and rating count together, then try the one that handles the kind of text you translate most.

Which translator for which kind of reading
- Odd words and phrases: pick a selected text translator, so you only translate what you highlight.
- Whole foreign language pages: pick a full page translator.
- Reading side by side with the original: pick a bilingual translator that keeps the source text on show.
- PDFs, ebooks or video subtitles: pick one whose listing names those formats.
- Writing as well as reading: pick one that helps you write in another language, not just read it.
What sits underneath the smaller translators
Several of the smaller listings say they're built on the same engines as the two biggest names, or let you choose between them, and some add AI providers. So the choice is often less about the engine and more about how the translation shows up: a pop-up for a phrase, a translated page, or a side by side view.
That's why it's worth trying two kinds with the same page before you settle. Read a paragraph you already understand in both languages, and you'll soon see which layout and which wording feel easier to follow.

My plain advice on choosing a translate extension
Start with what you translate most. For odd phrases, a light selected text translator is all you need; for whole pages, a full page one saves the clicking; and for PDFs or subtitles, check the listing names them before you install. Then look at the publisher and the last updated date, because a translator you rely on every day should be one that's kept up to date.

Frequently asked questions
How do I translate a whole web page in Chrome?
A full page translate extension does it in one go. Several listings here name full page or website translation, while others only translate the text you select.
Are translate Chrome extensions free?
Three listings here say so in their own text, including one that names a free version. The others don't say either way, so check before you install.
Can a Chrome extension translate PDFs?
Some can. Two listings here name PDFs, and one of those also names ebooks and video subtitles.
Do smaller translate extensions use Google or DeepL underneath?
Several say so on their listings. Some name Google's engine, one supports both big engines, and others mention AI providers alongside them.
Why does a translator with millions of users have a low rating?
A very big user base collects reviews from every kind of user. Read the rating count and a few recent reviews alongside the stars before you decide.
