Compliance management software keeps regulations, policies, controls and evidence in one system, so you can show what you do and prove it when asked. Some focus on regulatory change, some on security frameworks and some on policies inside tools you already use. Ten options follow, in no particular order.
Compliance usually starts in spreadsheets and shared folders. It works until an auditor, a regulator or a big customer asks for proof, and then everyone spends a week hunting for the latest version of a policy.
Compliance management software replaces that scramble with one place for obligations, owners, controls and evidence. The tools below cover different corners: financial services rules, ISO certification, policies in Microsoft 365 and cross-mapped security frameworks. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. If data protection is your first worry, my guide to AI tools that suit GDPR-conscious UK businesses is a good place to begin.
Compliance management tools side by side
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names the tool, an account or a plan or version of it as free, or says it's open source. Trial only means a time-limited trial or a small free allowance. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check the tool's own page before you sign up.

- One piece of evidence for many frameworks: RiskWatch.
The UK offence that rewards good procedures
GOV.UK guidance says an organisation may be criminally liable where an associated person, such as an employee or agent, commits a fraud intending to benefit it, and the organisation didn't have reasonable fraud prevention procedures in place. The offence applies to large organisations only, though the guidance says its principles are good practice for smaller ones too.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
That's a clear example of why compliance software matters. When the question is whether you had reasonable procedures, the answer depends on records: which policies existed, who approved them, what training happened and how risks were reviewed. A system that holds all of that is far easier to defend than a folder of old documents.
Map your obligations before you pick a tool
- List the laws, standards and contracts you must meet.
- Name an owner for each obligation.
- Note the evidence each one needs, from policies to logs.
- Decide how often each control is reviewed.
- Check which systems already hold that evidence.
Regulatory change, frameworks and policy tools
Regulatory change tools watch for new rules and updates, then help you work out what they mean for your business. They're a good fit for banks, insurers and other heavily regulated firms where the rules move constantly.
Framework tools map controls to standards such as ISO 27001 or SOC 2, so one control and one piece of evidence can satisfy several requirements. Policy tools focus on writing, approving and distributing policies, often inside Microsoft 365. Many platforms do a bit of all three, so start from the job you'll need done most.
Compliance software mistakes to avoid
- Buying before mapping obligations. The tool can't tell you what applies.
- No named owners. Controls without owners quietly lapse.
- Uploading evidence once. Proof needs refreshing on a schedule.
- Ignoring training records. They're often the first thing asked for.
Our roundup of audit management software sets the options side by side.
Signs your compliance programme is in good shape
- Every obligation has an owner.
- Evidence is found in minutes, not days.
- Policy reviews happen on time.
- New rules are assessed soon after they land.

My plain advice on compliance management software
Map what you must comply with first, then choose software that fits the size of that list. A smaller firm with a few policies and one security standard needs something simple and quick to set up. A regulated business with constant rule changes needs monitoring and stronger workflows.
Whatever you choose, give every obligation an owner and a review date, and keep the evidence fresh. Fraud risk is a good place to start reviewing, and my guide to types of ecommerce fraud and how to prevent them covers the common ones.
Frequently asked questions
What is compliance management software?
Software that keeps regulations, policies, controls, owners and evidence in one place so you can manage and prove compliance.
Who needs compliance management software?
Any organisation with regulations, security standards or customer requirements to meet, especially once spreadsheets become hard to keep current.
Is there free compliance management software?
Most tools on this list don't name a free plan, and a few offer a trial, so check the table.
Is compliance software the same as GRC software?
They overlap. GRC tools usually add risk management and governance to the compliance features.
Can compliance software help with ISO 27001?
Yes, several tools on this list include templates and guided paths for ISO 27001 and other standards.
Does software make a business compliant?
No. It organises the work and the evidence, but people still need to follow the policies and controls.
