A product options app lets shoppers customise a product with extra choices, text boxes, swatches or add-ons that go beyond Shopify's built-in variants. Ten apps follow, in no particular order. Many do almost the same job, so what decides the choice is the free plan label, how deep the reviews run and the one extra each tagline names.
Engraved, monogrammed or made to order products need more choices than a basic size and colour drop-down. Shopify's built-in variants have limits, and product options apps sit on top of them to add text boxes, swatches, add-ons and more.
The ten below are listed alphabetically and aren't ranked. If you're still choosing where to sell, my guide to picking an ecommerce platform for a small business is a good starting point.
Product options apps side by side
The free plan column comes from each app's own Shopify App Store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the listing shows Free or Free plan available. Trial only means it shows a free trial and nothing more. Not stated means the listing didn't name a free plan, so check before you install.

- You need shoppers to type a name or message: OPTIS Product Options, Variant.

- You want help setting the options up: Qikify Custom Product Options.

Ten listings with near identical taglines
On the Shopify App Store, a search for 'product options' showed 9,063 apps as of Oct 2026, with 4 of the first results labelled as ads. Read the taglines of the first ten organic results and they blur together. Two of them use the very same tagline, word for word.
So the tagline won't make the choice for you. What does separate them on the listing is the free label and the depth of reviews. Eight of the ten show Free or Free plan available, two show a free trial only, and review counts run from 432 to 5,224.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
None has fewer than 100 reviews and none is rated below 4.5, so a high rating alone won't pick one out either. Look for the one extra you need, then compare the free label and how many stores have reviewed it.
What to check on a product options listing
- Whether options can add an extra charge to the order, if your add-ons aren't free.
- Whether shoppers can type text or upload a file, if you personalise.
- How the options look and behave on a phone.
- Whether it works with your theme and cart without code changes.
- What the free plan includes before you build every product on it.
Mistakes when adding custom options
Too many options on one product slows the decision, so group them and show only what matters. Forgetting to show the chosen extras in the cart and on the order is another, because your team then has to chase the details by email. And building every product before testing one means a lot of rework if you switch apps.
The page itself still has to convert, so the benchmarks in the guide on Shopify conversion rates are worth a look.
How the product options shortlist was built
These are the first relevant, non-ad results the Shopify App Store returned for 'product options' as of Oct 2026, one app per vendor, each with a rating and at least 20 reviews shown. They're listed alphabetically, in no particular order, and the order isn't a ranking. Ratings, review counts and plan labels are copied from the listing as of Oct 2026 and will have moved since.

Plain advice for choosing product options
Because so many of these apps describe the same job, choose on the extra you need first, such as a calculator, text box, swatches, bundles or an AI setup, then on the free label and review depth. Try it on one product, check the order details come through, and only then roll it out.
Options are also an easy place to add upsells, which my guide to AI upselling and retention explores.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Shopify product options app?
It's an app that adds extra choices to a product page beyond Shopify's built-in variants, such as text boxes, swatches or add-ons.
Why do so many product options apps look the same?
Their store taglines describe the same job, and two of the ten here share a tagline word for word, so compare the free label, review depth and the one extra each names.
Are there free product options apps for Shopify?
Yes. Eight of the ten here show Free or Free plan available on the Shopify App Store as of Oct 2026, and two show a free trial only.
Can shoppers add personal text to a product?
Several apps here name a personaliser or text box in their tagline, so check the listing for the input you need before you install.
Does a higher rating mean a better options app?
Not on its own. Every app here is rated 4.7 or above as of Oct 2026, so review count and recent reviews tell you more.
