A Shopify gift card app adds what the built-in gift cards don't do on their own, such as bulk codes, gifting extras or a store credit wallet. Ten apps follow, alphabetically. Check two things first: whether Shopify already covers your need, and the review depth, because six of the ten have fewer than 100 reviews as of Oct 2026.
Shopify already sells gift cards without an app, so the first question isn't which app, it's what you need that the built-in version doesn't give you. For most stores that's one of three things: making lots of codes at once, turning gift cards into a wider gifting offer, or giving customers store credit they can spend later.

Trial only means it offers a free trial and nothing more. Not stated covers any other label, including Free to install, which tells you the install is free, not that a free plan exists, so check the listing before you sign up.

What Shopify's own gift cards already cover
The Shopify Help Center page on creating and selling gift cards says you can activate gift cards on your store, sell gift card products and create gift cards from the admin, with settings to customise gift card pages and notifications. That's the core job done before you install anything.
So an app only earns its place when it does something on top: bulk creation, gifting extras such as messages or giftable subscriptions, or a store credit wallet. Read each app's tagline for that one extra, and if none of that's on your list, you may not need an app at all.
Thin reviews on gift card listings
The Shopify App Store showed 3,220 apps for 'gift card' as of Oct 2026, with 4 of the top results labelled Ad. Among the ten here, review counts run from 23 to 764, and six have fewer than 100. Three are rated below 4.5.

A 5.0 rating from a few dozen reviews tells you far less than a slightly lower rating from hundreds, so read the newest reviews and the developer's replies before you trust a small listing with your customers' gifts. On plan labels, five show Free or Free plan available, three show a free trial only, and two show another label such as Free to install, which isn't a free plan.

Store credit or gift cards?
A gift card is usually bought by one person for another. Store credit is usually given by you, for a return, a goodwill gesture or a reward. Several apps here put both in one wallet, which keeps a customer's balance in one place instead of scattered codes.

Checks before you switch on gift cards
- Make one test card, buy it yourself, then redeem it at checkout so you see exactly what the customer sees.
- Check how the gift card email looks on a phone and on a laptop.
- Decide who in your team can create codes by hand, and keep a record of every code made that way.
- If you sell in person too, check the card works at the till as well as online.
- Write down how a customer checks their balance, and put that on your help page.

My plain advice on gift card apps
Start with Shopify's own gift cards and only add an app when you hit a job they don't do, such as bulk codes, gifting extras or a store credit wallet. When you do, lean towards a listing with plenty of recent reviews over a perfect rating from a handful, and test a card from purchase to redemption before the busy season starts.
