Uber Eats pays delivery people a base fare per order, plus promotions, plus 100% of tips. Uber shows what you'll earn before you accept, including any upfront tip and the estimated time and distance. Uber publishes no average, so your pay depends on the orders you take, your city and when you deliver.
Uber Eats sits inside the same Uber app many people already use for rides, but the pay works differently once you're carrying food rather than passengers. You can deliver by car, scooter, bike or even on foot in some cities, and each option changes what a shift looks like. Here's what Uber's own delivery pages say about how Uber Eats pays.
How an Uber Eats delivery fare is built
Uber says your total earnings come from three things: the base fare, promotions and tips. Before you accept any order, the app shows what you'll earn by delivering it. That offer card includes the base fare plus any tip the customer added when ordering, the pickup and drop-off locations, the restaurant's name and the estimated time and distance to drop-off.
Having all of that on one card is the main tool you've got. An order with a decent upfront tip and a short hop across town can be worth more than a longer one with no tip, and you can see the difference before you commit.
Restaurant wait time is the hidden factor. You're not earning while a kitchen is backed up, so couriers who learn which places are quick and which leave you standing by the counter tend to get more out of the same hours. It's worth keeping a note of the restaurants that slow you down and weighing that against the fare on the card next time one pops up.
Uber Eats tips and promotions
Customers can tip in the app, and Uber says 100% of tips are yours to keep. Some tips arrive upfront and show on the offer, while others are added after delivery.
Promotions are the other lever. Uber runs time-limited offers for delivery people, including ones for new couriers, and they change by location. Check the app for what's live in your area rather than relying on an offer you've seen quoted online, because Uber says some locations are excluded from these offers.
Car, bike, scooter or on foot: Uber Eats requirements
This is where Uber Eats is far more flexible than ride driving. Uber lists different requirements for each way of delivering:
- Bike or on foot: at least 18, with a government-issued ID and a Social Security number for screening.
- Motorbike or scooter: at least 19, with a valid driver's licence in your name and a Social Security number.
- Car: at least 19, or 21 in California and New York State, with a 2-door or 4-door vehicle and a valid licence.
Uber says delivery options vary by city and many markets ask for proof of residency. The way you travel shapes your pay more than people expect: a bike in a dense city centre avoids parking and fuel, while a car covers longer distances in the suburbs.
When Uber Eats delivery pay reaches you
Uber gives you two ways to get paid. Instant Pay lets you cash out up to 6 times a day for a fee. If you'd rather not pay that, your earnings transfer automatically to your bank account each week. Uber's delivery page doesn't state the Instant Pay fee, so check the figure in the app before you rely on it.
Uber Eats minimum pay in New York City
New York City is the clearest example of a local rule changing Uber Eats pay. The city's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection set a minimum for app-based restaurant delivery workers of 21.44 US dollars per hour before tips from April 1, 2025. That rose to 22.13 US dollars per hour from the first pay period on or after April 1, 2026, and the rule now covers grocery delivery apps too. Tips sit on top of that floor rather than counting towards it.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Outside cities with rules like this, there's no legal hourly floor for Uber Eats couriers to point to, and your pay is whatever the offers add up to.
Costs and tax on Uber Eats earnings
Uber says part of each fare goes towards government-mandated commercial insurance and other operating costs, and that you're responsible for your own tax obligations. Fuel, bike repairs, phone data and insulated bags are your costs, not Uber's. I'd keep receipts from the start and ask an accountant how tax applies to you.
How Uber Eats pay differs from Uber rides
If you already drive for Uber, delivery can look like an easy add-on, and Uber lets existing drivers add it from the Work Hub in the Driver app. But the economics differ. With food you're waiting at restaurants and handing over bags rather than carrying people, and tips often show on the offer upfront. With rides you've got surge, Quest and wait-time fees from passengers. My page on how much Uber drivers make on rides covers that side in full.
