The best MP3 converter depends on which of three jobs you've got: converting one audio file to another format, pulling the sound out of a video, or batch converting a whole music library. Browser converters handle the first two from a web page, while desktop converters are built for batches. Pick the job first, then the tool.
Search for an MP3 converter and you'll land on pages that do quite different things. Some take any file you drop in, some are built to strip the soundtrack from a video, and a couple are desktop programs made for converting a music collection in one go.
This list covers ten converters, using only what each maker's own page says, read on 2 Nov 2026 (as of Nov 2026). It's alphabetical and in no particular order. There's nothing here about speed or sound quality: just what each converter is and the job it's built for.

One search, three different conversion jobs
Here's the split a searcher wouldn't guess: 'MP3 converter' covers three jobs, and these tools differ more by job than by format list. CloudConvert's pitch is 'drop a file and pick what to turn it into'. Convertio's MP4 page says to 'extract audio from mp4 videos and save as mp3 online'. And dBpoweramp pairs an mp3 converter with a CD ripper and says it can 'batch convert whole music collection'.
- One audio file to another format: a browser converter where you upload a file and choose MP3, WAV, M4A or another output.
- Sound out of a video: a page built around taking the audio track from an MP4 or another video file and saving it as MP3.
- A whole music library: a desktop program that converts lots of files at once.
Browser converters for any file you drop in
Several converters here aren't audio tools first. They're general converter sites where audio is one section among many. One lists audio beside documents, images, video and archives. Another has its own audio converter section next to video, image, document and ebook converters, and a third offers separate MP3, WAV, M4A, WMA, OGG and FLAC converters from one list.
Online Audio Converter is built for audio alone, and its page title lists 'mp3, wav, mp4, m4a, ogg or iphone ringtones' as the outputs. So if you want a ringtone rather than a plain MP3, that's the line to read before you upload anything.

Taking the soundtrack out of a video
The second job is the one behind searches for a video to MP3 converter. Three tools on this list appear here through a page built for exactly that: an MP4 to MP3 page on two sites and a Video to MP3 page on a third. Another converter site has dedicated MP4 to MP3 and Video to MP3 pages in its menu as well.
The Video to MP3 page names the video formats it takes, including MP4, WebM, AVI, MPEG, MKV and FLV. One of the MP4 to MP3 pages lists music, recordings, interviews, lectures and screen recordings among the things you can turn into audio, so if your file is a recorded talk or a webinar, these pages are where to start.
Desktop converters for batches and music collections
The third job is converting lots of files at once, and that's where the two desktop programs come in. Switch promises to 'convert audio and music to any popular format', with batch conversion and automatic normalising listed on its page. The other desktop program pairs its converter with a CD ripper and lists editing and converting from Windows Explorer.
If you've got a folder of old WAV files or a shelf of CDs to digitise, a desktop converter built for batches is the one to look at. If it's a single voice memo, a browser converter will do.
Questions before you convert to MP3
- Am I converting an audio file, or pulling the sound out of a video?
- Do I need MP3, or another output such as WAV, M4A, OGG or a ringtone?
- Is this one file, or a whole folder or music collection?
- Would I rather work in a browser, or install a program on my PC or Mac?
- Do I also need to rip CDs?
- Does the converter list the input format my file is in?
Do you make an MP3 or audio converter? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My advice on picking an MP3 converter
Name the job before you pick the tool. For a single file, check the output list on the converter's own page and go. For a video soundtrack, head straight to a page built for MP4 or video to MP3. And for a music collection or a pile of CDs, look at the desktop programs built for batch conversion.
If the audio you want is in an Instagram Reel, here's how to convert an Instagram Reel to an MP3 audio file. If you need to change the video itself, see my list of the best video converters, and if you're hunting for a soundtrack, here's where to get background music for your videos and Reels.

Frequently asked questions
Which of these MP3 converters run in a browser?
Eight of the ten are online converters you use from a web page, and one of them says it works straight from your browser. The other two are desktop programs: one for PC and Mac, and one that pairs an audio converter with a CD ripper.
Can I convert a video to MP3 with these tools?
Yes. Three tools appear here through pages built for it: two MP4 to MP3 pages and one Video to MP3 page. A fourth site lists MP4 to MP3 and Video to MP3 pages in its menu, and one desktop program lists extracting audio from any media file, including video.
Which of these can convert a whole music collection?
One desktop program says it can batch convert a whole music collection, and lists converting from Windows Explorer. Another desktop converter lists batch conversion, which it describes as converting many files at once, on a PC or Mac.
Can I convert to formats other than MP3?
Yes. One audio converter here lists MP3, WAV, MP4, M4A, OGG and iPhone ringtones as outputs, another offers separate WAV, M4A, WMA, OGG and FLAC converters, and a desktop program says it converts audio and music to any popular format.
Do any of these rip CDs?
One does. Its page pairs an audio converter with a CD ripper, and the site's title lists FLAC and Apple Lossless beside mp3. It's a desktop program, so you install it rather than use it in a browser.
Which of these convert more than audio?
Several general converter sites here handle other file types too. One lists documents, images, audio, video and archives, another has video, image, document and ebook converters beside its audio section, and a third lists document, image, book, archive and video converters.
