An AI t-shirt design generator turns a written idea into a graphic you can print, in styles from vintage badges to cartoons and line art. The useful ones export files a printer can use, such as vector artwork or high-resolution images, and some show the design on a shirt. Ten options follow, in no particular order.
A good shirt design has to work at two sizes: on a phone screen in a shop listing, and across a chest from the other side of a room. Plenty of designs manage one and not the other.
The ten tools below cover idea generation, print-ready files, mockups and print-and-ship services. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. If you're making shirts as giveaways, my custom merchandise giveaway ideas are worth a look.

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check the tool's own page before you sign up.

What the U.S. Copyright Office says about AI designs
In Part 2 of its Copyright and Artificial Intelligence report, announced in NewsNet Issue 1060, the U.S. Copyright Office concludes that the outputs of generative AI can be protected by copyright only where a human author has determined sufficient expressive elements. That can include creative arrangements or modifications of the output, but not the mere provision of prompts.
This matters for anyone selling shirts. A design you only prompted may be hard to protect if someone copies it. Adding your own changes, such as redrawing parts, combining elements or setting your own type, puts you in a stronger place. It's also a reason to avoid prompting for famous characters or logos you don't own.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
How to design a shirt that sells
- Start from one audience, such as runners, teachers or dog owners.
- Write the idea as a short phrase or a single image, not both crammed together.
- Generate several styles and keep the one that reads from a distance.
- Clean up the file: fix text, remove stray marks, check the edges.
- Test it on a mockup in light and dark shirt colours before you list it.
Selling the shirts through an online store is a separate challenge, which my dropshipping tools guide covers for product research and store pages.
Print files, mockups and shop listings
Printers need clean files, ideally vector artwork or a large image with a transparent background. Mockups are what sell the design online, so a good mockup tool matters as much as the design tool.
If you sell through an online shop such as Etsy, your shop name and branding matter too. My guide to changing your Etsy shop name covers that step.
T-shirt design mistakes
- Tiny text. It can't be read across a room.
- Too many colours. Some print methods struggle with gradients.
- Famous characters or brand names. They belong to someone else.
- Skipping a dark-shirt check. Designs can vanish on black fabric.
Signs your shirt design is ready
- It reads from across a room.
- It works on light and dark shirts.
- The text is spelled and spaced cleanly.
- You've added your own changes to it.
Do you make AI t-shirt design tools? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on AI shirt designs
Use AI for the first idea and your own hands for the finish. The designs that sell, and the ones you can protect, usually have a person's changes in them.
Test every design as a mockup and as a tiny thumbnail before you list it. If it doesn't read at both sizes, it won't sell at either.
