An AI font generator creates custom lettering from a text description, suggests font pairings or styles a word with effects such as neon, gold or 3D. Some tools make an installable font from your handwriting instead. Nine options follow, in no particular order, from quick text effect makers to full typography studios.
Fonts do a lot of quiet work. The right lettering makes a logo feel premium, a thumbnail feel loud and a wedding invitation feel personal, and AI has made it much easier to get something custom without hiring a type designer.
The tools below cover three different jobs: styling a word for a post, pairing fonts for a website and creating a font you can install and type with. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. If you design in Canva, my guide on how to add fonts to Canva shows you how to bring new ones in.
Font generators side by side
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names the tool, an account or a plan or version of it as free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check the tool's own page before you sign up.

Check the licence before the logo
Google Fonts describes its catalog as open-source fonts and icons that you can bring into websites and products. That's a useful benchmark, because the licence is what decides whether you can use a font on a logo, a product or an ad.
AI-styled text is usually an image, not a font file, so you can't type with it later. A handwriting font is a real font you own, but a typeface you copy from somewhere else isn't yours to reuse. When a design is going on something you'll sell, check the terms or fall back to an open-source font.

Text effects, font pairing and real fonts
Text effect tools are the quickest win. You type a word, choose or describe a style and download an image of it, which is ideal for thumbnails, flyers and social posts. They're less useful for body text or anything you'll edit often.
Pairing tools solve a different problem: they suggest a heading font and a body font that share a theme but contrast nicely, which is the hardest part of choosing type for a website. Font makers go furthest, turning your handwriting or calligraphy into a file you can install and type with in any app.
Five things to decide first
- Do you need an image of styled text or a font you can type with?
- Will the lettering be printed, used online or both?
- Is it for a one-off post or a whole brand?
- Do you need it to work in another language?
- Who needs to edit it after you?
Lettering habits that look more professional
- Use two fonts at most. More than that starts to look messy.
- Check it small. A logo has to read on a phone screen.
- Give letters room. Tight spacing is the most common mistake.
- Keep a style sheet. Note which fonts and sizes you use where.
Kittl comes up often for custom lettering, and what its free plan does and doesn't allow is explained in the Kittl free plan explained.
When to call a type designer
- You need a custom typeface for a big brand.
- The font must work in several languages.
- You need many weights for print and web.
- The lettering is the heart of the logo.
Do you make font, lettering or typography tools? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on AI font generators
Match the tool to the job. For a quick social graphic, a text effect generator does it in a minute. For a website, use a pairing tool to choose two fonts and stick with them. For a personal brand, a font made from your own handwriting is a lovely touch that nobody else can copy.
Keep it simple and consistent, and always check the licence before lettering goes on something you'll sell. If you're styling text for Instagram, my Instagram font generator is a quick way to try fancy text in your bio and captions.
